On the 40th Anniversary of 1967 War, Abbas Says Regional and International Stability Needs Palestinian State

RAMALLAH, June 5, 2007, (WAFA)- 

President Mahmoud Abbas asserted Tuesday that the regional and international stability needs the birth of the Palestinian independent state.

In a televised address on the forty occasion of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, President asserted that there is a universal consensus on the necessity of the establishment of the Palestinian state as a base for the international and regional stability.

President said that the Palestinian people exceeded the defeat of the 1967 war with the revolution.

"Despite difficulties we work hard for the goal of the state which is so closed," he said.

President said that the PLO programmes, adopted after 1967 war, are the most realistic and balanced programmes.

He asserted that the influence of PLO programmes opened all doors in the world for our just cause.

President said that since that "black date" (June 6, 1967) the Palestinian people pay big price after the big defeat which created a significant change in the region and added new complications on the Arab-Israeli struggle.

He said that the 1967 defeat put more big fighting duties on the shoulders of the Palestinian people.

In 1967 war, the Israeli troops occupied the West Bank (including the East Jerusalem), the Gaza Strip, Sinai Desert in Egypt, the Golan Highs in Syria and some parts of Jordan.

President affirmed that the Palestinian people responded the defeat with commitment to the national identity and a fighting for restoring the legitimate rights.

For exceeding the defeat, thousands of Palestinian and Arabs were killed, arrested and exiled. Such scarifies helped in going forward to reach the Palestinian inalienable rights (right of return, the independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital), President said.

He asserted that the big duty on the Palestinian shoulder is a historical turn as it strengthened the Palestinian cause as a political issue discusses the existence of a people rather than just a human issue that could settled by relief, containment or absorption.

Regarding truce with the Israel side, President asserted that he is working on a comprehensive and mutual truce in the West Bank and Gaza.

He mentioned that the he is so concerned on the "geographical, financial, psychological and economical siege", affirming that he works all nights and days to end it.

President asserted that he rejects the international "selective" deal with the government as it is headed by Hamas.

Regarding the imminent meeting with the Israeli PM, Olmert, President said that he would bring up the issues of the Apartheid Wall, colonies and the Palestinian money detained by Israel.

He added that he would insist on beginning negotiation path, asserting that the absence of political work in the time of intensive military act would lead to more complications.

President expressed his deep concerned on the situation of the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.

He denounced the extremist military group in Lebanon (Fateh Alislam) which uses the camps of the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon to attack the Lebanese army and jeopardize the life of the Palestinian civilians.
