AAI to Host Live Web Chats with Palestinian Leaders

Chats Begin Today, Come as Part of “40 Hours for 40 Years” Campaign

WASHINGTON – June 7, 2007 – The Arab American Institute (AAI) will today begin holding live web chats with Palestinian leaders and activists in the Occupied Territories as well as in the U.S.  The web chats are part of “40 Hours for 40 Years: Palestine Lives,” a multimedia, interactive experience commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1967 Arab-Israeli war and 40 years of occupation.  AAI is placing leaders behind a webcam to answer questions from the public. 

The web chats begin today at 1:30 p.m. EDT with a conversation with Rafiq Husseini, chief of staff to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.  If you would like to send Mr. Husseini a question, make sure your question is first in line by sending it in advance to Rebecca Abou-Chedid at rabouchedid@aaiusa.org.

About the guests:

Ghaith Al-Omari
is a Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation.  Prior to that he was an advisor to President Abbas and director of the International Relations Department at his office.  In the past he served as a member of the Palestinian negotiating team in the Camp David and Taba negotiations and was the lead Palestinian drafter of the Geneva Initiative.

Dianna Buttu
is a Palestinian-Canadian lawyer residing in the West Bank.  From 2000 to 2005, she served as a lawyer for the Palestinian peace negotiating team before being appointed as an advisor to President Abbas.  A frequent commentator on Middle East affairs, M. Buttu has appeared on TV and radio broadcasts around the world.  In 2006, Ms. Buttu resigned from her advisory post and now teaches at Birzeit University.

Rafiq Husseini
is chief of staff to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.  A highly regarded public health expert, he led the effort to establish the Palestinian health care system.  Through his various leadership positions in respected Palestinian non-governmental organizations, Husseini has collaborated with the Israelis and international aid groups, including the World Bank and the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Aron Kader
is a member of the Axis of Evil Comedy Tour, featuring other prominent Middle Eastern American Comedians. He has been seen on Comedy Central's “Premium Blend” and the television cop drama, “The Shield.”  Aron performs regularly in Hollywood at his home club, “The Comedy Store.”

Daniel Levy
is a Senior Fellow and Director of the Middle East Policy Initiative of the American Strategy Program at the New America Foundation. He was the lead Israeli drafter of the Geneva Initiative and directed policy planning and international efforts at the Geneva Campaign Headquarters in Tel Aviv.
