18 people killed, 62 wounded in Iraq until Sunday noon

Baghdad, Oct 21, (VOI) – 

Eighteen people were killed and at least 62 others wounded (by war attacks) in different areas in Iraq during the past 24 hours, security sources said, adding a U.S. soldier was killed and eight others wounded. "Thirteen people were killed and 52 others wounded in a military operation conducted by the U.S. forces in four sectors of Sadr City, eastern Baghdad, during the early hours of Sunday," a police source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). 

The U.S. army, in a statement on Sunday, said one of its soldiers was killed and eight others wounded as a result of an explosive device attack in eastern Baghdad. The fatality brings to 3,833 the number of U.S. soldiers killed since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003. 

In Ninewa, northern Iraq, a police source said gunmen attacked a patrol on Sunday morning, killing two policemen, including Lt. Col. Muhammad al-Lehebi, the al-Ahrar police station director, and two others injured in the area of Dora al-Hammam, eastern Mosul. 

In the predominantly Sunni province of al-Anbar, western Iraq, a security source on Sunday said two people were killed and four others wounded when a car rigged with explosives went off near an Iraqi police patrol in al-Saqlawiya district, northwestern Falluja, on Saturday evening. 

Eyewitnesses in Diala, northeastern Iraq, said an armed group killed Sheikh Abdul-Latif Abdul-Wahid, a notable of al-Aankabiya village and Diala province, and injured four others in an attack in the village of al-Bu Aziz, al-Khalis district, northern Ba'aquba. In Duhuk, in the northern part of the country, a source from the Border Guard forces said 58 mortar shells fell on villages in the districts of Zakho and al-Imadiya during the early hours of Sunday. No word was said about casualties.

Two Iraqi soldiers killed in Kirkuk

Kirkuk, Oct 20, (VOI) - 

Two Iraqi soldiers were killed on Saturday when a roadside bomb exploded near their patrol in Kirkuk, a police source said. "A roadside bomb went off, this morning, near an Iraqi army vehicle patrol in al-Hawijah district, 70 km southwest of Kirkuk, killing two soldiers," the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source added "an army vehicle was destroyed in the attack." Meanwhile, the same source told VOI that police patrols found an unidentified body dumped in Bahji district, 20 km west of Kirkuk. "The body bore shot wounds to different parts of the body," he added. Kirkuk is 250 km northeast of Baghdad. SK/SR

Two casualties as bomb explodes in Baghdad

At least one civilian was killed and another wounded on Saturday when a bomb stashed inside a minibus exploded in western Baghdad, a police source said. "A bomb stashed inside a minibus went off, this afternoon, in al-Toubji neighborhood, western Baghdad, killing one civilian and wounding another," the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source added that the security forces sealed off the scene and banned civilians from coming into the vicinity of the blast location. SK/SR

Five unknown bodies found in Baghdad

Baghdad, Oct 20, (VOI) - 

Five unidentified bodies were found in different areas of the Iraqi capital Baghdad over the past 24 hours, the Interior Ministry said on Saturday. "Police patrols found five unidentified bodies in different areas of Baghdad, most of them were found in Baghdad's western side (al-Karkh)," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "Three corpses were found in different neighborhoods of al-Karkh: two in al-Aamel, and one in al-Doura," he explained. "Two more bodies were found in Rasafa, eastern side of Baghdad, one in al-Shaab neighborhood, and the other in Baghdad al-Jadida area," the source added. "Most of the bodies found bore signs of gunshot wounds to different parts of the body, mainly to the head," he noted. SK/SR

12 policemen killed, wounded, 34 gunmen arrested in Baghdad

Baghdad, Oct 20, (VOI) – 

Three Iraqi policemen were killed and nine others wounded while 34 gunmen, including one al-Qaeda member, were arrested in different parts of the Iraqi capital over the past 48 hours, Baghdad security operations command said on Saturday. "20 gunmen, including Nizal Abdul-Nassar, a leading member of al-Qaeda Organization in Iraq for the area of Abu Ghraib, western Baghdad, and 17 other suspects were arrested in Baghdad," according to a command statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The arrests came within the Fardh al-Qanoon, law imposing, plan launched by the Iraqi government in mid-February 2007 to improve security conditions in the war-troubled country. "Security forces also defused four explosive devices, dismantled a car rigged with explosives and an explosive belt in al-Karkh area, destroyed a hideout used for manufacturing home-made explosives in al-Aazamiya, northern Baghdad, released two kidnapped people, and seized large amounts of weapons and ammunition," the statement added.

6 civilians kidnapped in separate attacks in Kirkuk

Kirkuk, Oct 20, (VOI) – 

Unidentified gunmen kidnapped five civilians in the southern part of Kirkuk while a sixth was kidnapped in a separate attack in central Kirkuk on Saturday, police said. "A group of armed men kidnapped five civilians and their vehicle near the village of Sami al-Aasi on the Taza-Rashad highway, (25 km) south of Kirkuk," a source from Kirkuk police told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) on condition of anonymity. "The kidnappers, after a short while, released one of the kidnapped and left him in the vehicle near the al-Mashrou checkpoint in al-Rashad district," the source said. Another civilian was kidnapped in the area of al-Hadidin, near al-Shifaa Hospital in central Kirkuk and led him to an unknown place, the same source added, giving no further details. Kirkuk is 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

12 civilians killed, injured in bomb explosion in northern Hilla

Babel, Oct 20, (VOI) – 

Three civilians were killed and nine others wounded when an explosive device went off in al-Iskandriya district, northern Hilla, a local police source said on Saturday.

"An explosive charge was detonated on a highway in northern Hilla's al-Iskandriya district while a Kia-modeled vehicle was passing by," the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "The explosion killed three civilians, wounded nine others, including three women, and caused severe damage to the vehicle," the source indicated. Hilla, the capital city of Babel province, is located 100 km southwest of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Kirkuk bomb explosion wounds three policemen

Kirkuk, Oct 20, (VOI) – 

Three policemen were wounded when an explosive charge went off near their patrol in central Kirkuk, an official security source said on Saturday.

"An explosive device was detonated near a patrol vehicle in central Kirkuk's al-Kournish St. on Saturday morning, injuring three police officers," the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The wounded were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Kirkuk, a mixed city of Kurds, Turkmen, Christians and Arabs, is located 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
