Cop killed, six wounded in northern Babel blast

Babel, Oct 27, (VOI) – 

One policeman was killed and six others wounded when an explosive charge went off near their patrol vehicle in northern Babel, a local police source said on Saturday. "A roadside explosive device planted on the road linking al-Asriyya village to al-Iskanriya district in northern Hilla was detonated by means of remote control while a patrol car was passing by," the source, who preferred to remain unnamed, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "The explosion killed one policeman and injured six others, who were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment," the source indicated. The source provided no further details. Hilla, the capital city of Babel province, is located 100 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Eight killed, 13 wounded as charge explodes in Baghdad

Baghdad, Oct 27, (VOI)- 

At least eight people were killed and 13 more wounded on Saturday when a bomb exploded in southern Baghdad, a police source said.

"A bomb stashed in a garbage pin exploded, today at noon, near a restaurant in Jisr Diala area, southern Baghdad, killing eight people and wounding 13," the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source added "among the wounded were some policemen." "The wounded were rushed to a nearby hospital, while security forces sealed off the scene." SK

Two U.S. soldiers killed, four wounded in Iraq

Baghdad, Oct 27, (VOI)- 

The U.S. army said two service members were killed and four were wounded in two combat operations throughout Iraq.

"A U.S. Soldier assigned to Multi-National Division – North was killed when he sustained small arms fire while conducting operations in Salah ad Din Oct. 25," the U.S. army said in a statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). In another statement, the U.S. military said "a Multi-National Division-Baghdad soldier was killed and four others wounded when their unit was attacked with an explosively-formed penetrating device in a southern section of the Iraqi capital Oct. 25." 

The deaths bring to 3,839 the number of the U.S. service members killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion of the country in March 2003. From this number 32 U.S. troops have been so far killed in October. Last July saw the smallest monthly loss of life for the U.S. army in Iraq this year as 80 U.S. soldiers were killed. November 2004, which witnessed fierce battles between U.S. forces and armed groups in Falluja city, Anbar province, is still the month that saw the highest U.S. death toll with 137. April 2004 comes second with 135, followed by May 2007 during which 126 U.S. soldiers were killed. SK

Three unknown bodies found in Baghdad

Baghdad, Oct 26, (VOI)- 

Three unidentified bodies were found in different areas of the Iraqi capital Baghdad over the past 24 hours, the Interior Ministry said on Friday.

"Police patrols found three unidentified bodies in different areas of Baghdad, most of them were found in Baghdad's western side (al-Karkh)," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "Two corpses were found in different neighborhoods of al-Karkh: one in each al-Aamel and al-Bayaa," he explained. "One body was found in Ur neighborhood, eastern side of Baghdad," the source added. "Most of the bodies found bore signs of gunshot wounds to different parts of the body, mainly to the head," he noted.

Two civilians killed, four wounded in separate attacks in Diala

Ba'aquba Oct 26, (VOI)- 

Two persons were killed and four others, including three women, were injured on Friday in two separate attacks in Diala, an official source in Diala province said.

"A suicide bomber blew up an explosive belt strapped to his body on Friday afternoon in al-Aorouba neighborhood in central Muqdadiya, northeast of Baaquba," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) under condition of anonymity. "The explosion killed a woman and injured four civilians, including three women," he explained. "A roadside bomb went off this afternoon on the main road that leads to Bani Tameem village, south of Baaquba, targeting a civilian vehicle, killing one person," the same source said. He pointed out that police forces in al-Salam district in Khalis, north of Baaquba, managed today, in collaboration with tribals, to face an armed attack launched by elements of al-Qaeda in Iraq targeting the district's residents. Baaquba, capital city of Diala province, is 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Two policemen, two civilians injured in bomb blast in Kirkuk

Kirkuk, Oct 26, (VOI)- 

Four persons, including two policemen, were injured on Friday when an explosive charge went off targeting a police vehicle patrol in southern Kirkuk, a police source said.

"A roadside bomb exploded this evening near a police vehicle patrol in al-Domeez market region in southern Kirkuk, injuring four, including two policemen," the source, who preferred not to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "The wounded were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment," he added, noting that their condition was stable. Kirkuk is located 250 km northeast of Baghdad.

AP Headline: 8 killed in Iraq restaurant blast

BAGHDAD (AP) -- 

A bomb exploded Saturday in southeast of Baghdad, killing eight people and wounding 13 others, police and hospital officials said.

The blast, which occurred at 7:30 a.m. in Jisr Diyala, targeted restaurants frequented by government employees and construction workers, according to officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Two police officers and two women were among the wounded, the officials said.

Last Wednesday, eight people were killed and 24 were injured when a bomb struck the same area, which is about 10 miles southeast of Baghdad.

Also Saturday, the U.S. military announced the death of a soldier killed during small arms fire while conducting operations in the Salahuddin province.

Baghdad police found three people slain execution-style and bearing signs of torture on Friday. The morgue in the southern city of Kut received two bodies, including one pulled from the Tigris River.
