Thousands of historical manuscripts vulnerable to impairment at Al-Aqsa Mosque, says Najeh Bukairat

Bukairat: Thousands of historical manuscripts vulnerable to impairment

[ 27/10/2007 - 10:43 AM ]

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)--

Dr. Najeh Bukairat, the manager of the Manuscripts Department in Al-Aqsa Mosque, warned that thousands of historical documents and manuscripts are vulnerable to impairment and decay because the Israeli government impedes their refurbishment.

In a press statement to the Palestine newspaper on Friday, Bukairat confirmed that there are 8,000 Islamic manuscripts in occupied Jerusalem, other than 4,000 old manuscripts belonging to the Shari'a court.

The manager explained that the Israeli occupation government (IOG) is still holding materials and appliances at the port of Isdood (Ashdod), which were sent by the UNESCO to the department of Islamic endowments for the restoration and maintenance of ancient manuscripts and ignored all repeated appeals to release them, pointing out that the UNESCO managed to get all permits needed for the entry of these materials.

The manager appealed to the Jordanian officials and the PA to work on getting the refurbishment materials released, pointing out that these materials do not infringe laws and are only used for preserving heritage and history.

He held the IOG fully responsible for any damage occurring to these historic manuscripts; because according to international laws any occupation assumes responsibility for the maintenance of history of the occupied people.
