10 gunmen killed, another wounded, 16 arrested in Miqdadiya

Diala, Sept 22, (VOI) – 

A joint U.S.-Iraqi force killed 10 gunmen, wounded another and arrested 16 others in a military operation in Diala's city of Baaquba, a media spokesman for Diala's operations command said on Saturday.

"A joint force from the Iraqi army, Diala's police and multi-National personnel launched on Saturday morning a military operation in Ba'aquba's Balour village, al-Aaskari neighborhood, al-Safar and al-Jalali…," Staff Colonel Ragheb Radi al-Umiri told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "Three caches of arms and ammunition were found during the operation," he indicated. Meanwhile, an explosive charge targeting a police patrol went off in al-Abara district in northern Ba'aquba, wounding four civilians who were at the scene of the explosion, he added. Ba'aquba, the capital city of Diala province, is 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Gunmen kill, wound five policemen in Diala

Diala, Sept 22, (VOI)- 

At least one policeman was killed and four more were wounded on Saturday as gunmen attacked a police checkpoint in Diala province, central Iraq, a police source said. "Unknown gunmen attacked a police checkpoint, this morning, in Baladruz district, southwestern Diala, killing a policeman and wounding four," the source, who asked not to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source who declined to say if there were casualties among civilians in the attack said "the wounded were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment." Diala province is 57 km northeast of Baghdad. U.S. forces kill 7-member family in northern Hilla – police

Babel, Sept 22, (VOI) – 

U.S. forces killed a family of seven members including women and children on suspicion they belonged to one of the militias in Al-Iskandariya district, 50 km north of Babel province, an official police source in Babel said.

"U.S. forces raided a house in Al-Iskandariya and opened fire at a family, killing all seven members. The U.S. soldiers then detonated the house," the source, who declined to have his name mentioned, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). No comment was made by the U.S. side so far on the reported incident. The source noted that after detonating the house, the U.S. forces clashed with the local residents of Al-Iskandariya, killing 12 of them. Hilla, the capital of Babel, lies 100 km north of Baghdad.

Car bomb explodes near Iranian Consulate in Basra-eyewitness

Basra, Sept 22, (VOI)- 

A car bomb exploded on Saturday afternoon near the Iranian Consulate in the southern Iraqi city of Basra with no causalities reported, an eyewitness said. "A car bomb detonated, this afternoon, near the Iranian Consulate in al-Bradhiyah area, central Basra, leaving no casualties," an eyewitness told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The witness added "some nearby buildings and houses were damaged in the explosion." Iraqi authorities could not be immediately reached to comment on the incident. Basra, a predominantly Shiite province, is 590 km south of Baghdad. SK

Gunmen attack village in Diala

Diala, Sept 22, (VOI)- 

At least eight policemen were wounded and 18 gunmen arrested on Saturday when militants launched an attack on a village in Diala province, central Iraq, the spokesman for Diala Operation Command said. "Gunmen, believed to be from Qaeda Organization, waged, this morning, an attack against al-Bazaniyah village of Baladruz district, wounding eight policemen," Lt. Colonel Ragheb Radhi al-Omiri told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source said "the police forces managed to detain 18 gunmen during the attack."

Meanwhile, the spokesman told VOI that a police officer survived on Saturday morning an attempt on his life when gunmen in a car intercepted his way on Khalis-Hibhib road and opened fire at the officer's vehicle. "The officer survived unharmed while his vehicle was severely damaged during the attack," Lt. Colonel al-Omiri said. Diala is located 57 km northeast of Baghdad. SK

The Iraqi newspaper, Sotaliraq, reported the following war attacks and deaths.

- 10 alleged Iraqi fighters were killed, one were injured in an attack by US-led Iraqi forces in Ba'aqouba. 16 Iraqis were also detained in the operation.

- Four people were injured in an explosion targeting a police patrol,  in Ba'aqouba.

- A policeman was killed, four were injured in a gunmen's attack on a police checkpoint in Baladruz, southeastern Ba'aqouba.

- Eight policemen were injured in an attack in Al-Bazzaniyah.

- A senior police officer survived an assassination attempt between Khalis and Habhab.

- A body of an Iraqi was found in a bag in Kirkuk.

- Two explosions went off in Kirkuk, no details yet about casualties.

- Eleven people were injured in a bomb explosion in a market in Sulaiman Bek, Tuz.

- Iraqi Red Crescent reported that there are two million refugees inside Iraq, forced to leave their homes due to the continuous ethnic cleansing.

AP Headline: U.S. Military Confirms Arrests of 25 Linked to Slaying of Sunni Leader Opposed to al-Qaida

BAGHDAD (AP) -- 

The U.S. military on Saturday confirmed the arrests of 25 people linked to the assassination of the leader of the U.S.-backed revolt by Sunni Arab tribesmen in the western Anbar province against al-Qaida in Iraq.

The suspects, who include the head of the security detail that was supposed to protect Sheik Abdul-Sattar Abu Risha, killed in a bombing Sept. 13, were detained by Iraqi police, Lt. Col. Jubair Rashid said, an Iraqi police officer in Anbar.

In (war attacks) Saturday, gunmen ambushed an Iraqi police checkpoint in Ba'aqouba, 35 miles northeast of Baghdad, killing one officer and wounding five others, according to authorities. A civilian also was killed in Khalis, near Baqouba, in the Diyala province, when gunmen opened fire on his car.

U.S. Military Deaths in Iraq at 3,793 Friday, According to Count by the Associated Press

As of Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, at least 3,793 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes seven military civilians. At least 3,095 died as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers.

The AP count is five higher than the Defense Department's tally, last updated Friday at 10 a.m. EDT.

The British military has reported 169 deaths; Italy, 33; Ukraine, 18; Poland, 21; Bulgaria, 13; Spain, 11; Denmark, seven; El Salvador, five; Slovakia, four; Latvia, three; Estonia, Netherlands, Thailand, two each; and Australia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Romania, South Korea, one death each.
