US Soldier, 45 Iraqis Killed in War Attacks, According to April 1, 2008 News Reports

Yaqen.net reported the following news today:

- US forces announced the death of a US soldier in a hospital in Germany, following his injury in a south of Baghdad attack, in March. Amsi.org also reported that US forces killed two Iraqis north of Baghdad, in a village called Nadeem.

It also reported that four members of US-recruited Popular Committees were killed by gunmen near Ba'aqouba.

6 Sahwa fighters killed in attack near Samarra

Salah al-Din - Voices of Iraq
Tuesday , 01 /04 /2008  Time 10:16:36

Salah al-Din, Apr 1, (VOI) –

Six (US-recruited) Sahwa tribal fighters were killed in an attack on a checkpoint near the city of Samarra, a police source from Salah al-Din province said on Tuesday.

"An armed group in a number of vehicles feigning wedding celebrations opened fire at a Sahwa checkpoint near Lake al-Tharthar, (20 km) east of Samarra, killing all six personnel in the checkpoint," the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity out of security concerns, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

"The gunmen escaped to nearby desert areas after their attack," the source said, not giving further details.

Armed groups belonging to al-Qaeda have been recently using new tactics in their assaults on police and tribal forces. A checkpoint in Baiji city came under a double attack two days ago by gunmen hiding in a small truck. The attack was followed by another on the same checkpoint when a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vehicle, killing three Sahwa fighters and two policemen.
The Sahwa councils were set up in a number of Iraqi provinces such as al-Anbar, Diala, Ninewa, and Salah al-Din with the aim of bolstering political and local tribal powers to fight armed groups, particularly al-Qaeda network, in those areas.

These councils are usually led by tribal chiefs or notables in the provinces.
Following the assassination of his father and six of his brothers by al-Qaeda Organization in Iraq in 2004, Sheikh Abdul-Sattar Abu Risha founded the Anbar Sahwa Council and chaired the Iraq Sahwa Congress, an alliance encompassing 42 clans that pledged to fight al-Qaeda members.
The Sahwa fighters managed to flush out armed groups from a number of areas once considered strongholds of gunmen for years.

Abu Risha, however, was killed in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack that targeted his house in al-Ramadi, capital of the predominantly Sunni Anbar. The attack also left his bodyguard and two other escorts killed and his nephew seriously wounded.

Samarra, about 124 km north of Baghdad, is one of the four holiest Muslim cities in Iraq, and is considered as the largest ancient city known in the whole world with its majestic ruins which extends about 9 km horizontally and 34 km vertically along the eastern bank of the river Tigris.
Insurgents used explosives to demolish two minarets at a revered Shiite shrine in Samarra in June 2007. The partial destruction of al-Askari shrines in Samarra in a fierce bombing attack sparked a devastating increase in sectarian bloodshed.

The latest clashes in Baghdad and a number of Iraq's southern provinces contributed to this steep increase.
