Blockade lifted off Sadr City, 13 gunmen killed – MNF   (Yesterday, only six were reported killed in the fighting).

Baghdad, Apr 12, (VOI) –

The Baghdad Operations Command lifted on Saturday a weeklong blockade off Sadr City, eastern Baghdad, that followed clashes between security personnel and armed men last March, a media spokesman for the Multi-National Force (MNF) in Iraq said.

"The measure came in coordination with the Baghdad's al-Rasafa operations command to provide protection for Sadr City residents," Abdul-Latif Rayan told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI), adding "there was no security cordons slapped on Sadr City."

Baghdad and other southern Iraqi provinces had witnessed armed clashes between government forces and groups of Shi'i leader Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militias that broke out on March 25 hours after Maliki declared a security plan codenamed Saulat al-Forsan (Knights' Assault) which he said aimed to eliminate armed groups in the oil-rich port city of Basra, 590 km south of Baghdad.

Meanwhile, Rayan said Iraqi army forces, backed by MNF troops, killed two (Mahdi Army militiamen) snipers and two others firing missiles and hand-grenades from high buildings in eastern Baghdad.

"The joint forces also killed four Special Groups members and two (gunmen) after the forces' patrols came under attacks with light arms and improvised explosive devices from high buildings," Rayan added. "An MNF drone plane fired one missile, killing three criminals," he said.

On the joint force's losses during military operations on Saturday, Rayan said "two vehicles were destroyed but there were no critical injuries in the Iraqi and coalition forces' ranks."

The special Groups is the name given by the MNF to renegade members of cleric Sadr's Mahdi Army militias who failed to observe Sadr's orders to freeze the militias' activities. Sadr had renewed a 6-month freeze on his militias starting on February 26 and expiring on August 26.
