Diala, Apr 14, (VOI) –

A joint security force found five unidentified bodies in a village in al-Muqdadiya district, 45 km northeast of Ba'aqouba, a security source from Diala province said on Monday.

"The mass grave, found in Al-Zoar village, Muqdadiya, contained 35 bodies. Thirty were discovered on Sunday and five on Monday. All of them were decayed," the source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

Earlier on Monday the U.S. army said in a statement that 30 bodies buried inside a mass grave in southern al-Muqdadiya city were uncovered.

"Multi-National Division – North Soldiers discovered between 20 – 30 bodies buried in a mass grave south of Muqdadiya, Iraq, April 13," according to the statement received VOI.

"All the bodies were badly decomposed and appear to have been at the site nearly eight months. The Coalition forces were unable to determine whether or not the bodies had been tortured at the time of death."

The remains will be moved to a nearby cemetery, the U.S. statement read.
Late last March, the U.S. army said it found a mass grave with 14 bodies in northern Muqdadiya, Diala province.

A U.S. army statement then read that some of the bodies showed signs of having been tortured and remained in that site for a period of 2-6 months. That site happened to be 100 meters north of another mass grave with 37 bodies discovered a couple of days earlier.

According to the statement, the areas where these mass graves were found have been under the al-Qaeda network's control before the U.S. forces expelled them within a security campaign launched jointly between the U.S. and Iraqi armies on November 27, 2007 in Diala with the aim of tracking down al-Qaeda operatives in the province and improving security conditions there.

Joint forces, during the period that followed the launching of Operation Fardh al-Qanoon (law imposing) on February 19, 2007, discovered many mass graves in most areas of Diala, including one in the village of al-Bu Teima, al-Khalis district, 25 km north of Ba'aqouba, in which more than 100 unidentified bodies were found.

Ba'aquba, the capital of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.
