2 US Soldiers, 17 Iraqis Killed, According to April 16, 2008 News Reports

Unknown gunmen kill 3, wound 5 in Diala

    Diala, Apr 16, (VOI) -

Three individuals were killed and five others wounded when unknown gunmen launched attacks against them in different parts of Diala on Wednesday, a security source said. "Two civilians were killed and five others wounded in an attack against a transport coach in the main road leading to Muqadiya district, 45 km north-east of Ba'aqouba," a Diala security source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).

Elsewhere in the province, a second security source pointed out "unknown gunmen shot dead a national security member in Khan Bani Saad district, 20 km south of Ba'aquba." Ba'aquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km north-east Baghdad. AM/SR

5 gunmen killed, wounded in airstrike in Basra

Basra, Apr 1, (VOI)-

Four gunmen were killed and another one was injured in an airstrike in western Basra on Wednesday, the media spokesperson for the Multi National Forces (MNF) in Iraq said.

“A MNF warplane detected a group of gunmen while attacking an Iraqi army checkpoint in al-Hussein neighborhood in western Basra by Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG),” Captain Chris Ford told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

“It shelled them, killing four gunmen and injuring the fifth,” he added.

British soldiers were stationed in one base - the Basra International Airport, 25 km northeast of the province - after handing over the former presidential palaces, which they took as a military base, to the Iraqi forces. The British forces in the oil-rich port city of Basra, 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, keep 5,250 troops within the MNF in Iraq after withdrawing 1,600 soldiers during the past months. Britain was the United States' prime ally in the March 2003 invasion of Iraq.

IED kills two U.S. soldiers in Anbar

The U.S. army said on Wednesday that two Marines were killed by an improvised explosive device in Anbar on Monday.

“Two Multi-National Force – West Marines were killed in action April 14 when their vehicle was attacked by an enemy force with an improvised explosive device in al Anbar Province,” the army said in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

The deaths bring the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq since the beginning of military operations in March 2003 to 4037. Of this number, 29 were killed in February 2008, while 40 were killed in January 2008. 25 soldiers have been so far killed in April.

Man, daughter killed by U.S. army in Ninewa

Mosul, Apr 16, (VOI)-

U.S. forces killed a man and his daughter after their vehicle patrol was attacked by Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPGs) in eastern Mosul, the official spokesman for the Ninewa operations command said on Wednesday.

“Unidentified gunmen attacked a U.S. vehicle patrol by RPG on the main street in al-Maliya neighborhood in eastern Mosul,” Brig. Khaled Abdul Sattar told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq (VOI). “The forces stormed a nearby house, killing a man and his daughter,” he added.

No word was immediately available from the U.S. army on the incident. Meanwhile, a source, declined to mention his name, told the VOI that “the forensic medicine department in the Mosul hospital received this morning two bodies of a man and his daughter gunned down by U.S. troops.” Mosul, the capital, of Ninewa, is 405 km north of Baghdad. 16 killed, injured in acts of violence until Wednesday afternoon

Eight persons were killed, eight others were wounded, two were arrested and three depots were found in acts of violence that took place throughout Iraq until Wednesday afternoon, security sources said.

In Mosul, the official spokesman for the Ninewa operations command Brigadier Khaled Abdul Sattar said that U.S. forces killed a man and his daughter after their vehicle patrol was attacked by Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPGs) in eastern Mosul.

The brigadier also said that al-Qaeda’s Islamic State of Iraq leader was arrested by security forces in southwestern Mosul.

Meanwhile, an Iraqi army source said U.S.-Iraqi forces on Wednesday found a stockpile of weapons near Makhmour district, southwest of Arbil.

Makhmour, 35 km southwest of Arbil, is one of the districts administratively disputed by Arbil, 349 km northeast of Baghdad, and Ninewa, 405 km northeast of the Iraqi capital.

In Basra, an Iraqi army commander said Iraqi army forces on Wednesday arrested the tribes official at al-Sadr’s office in Basra, and found dozens of bombs inside his house.
“Iraqi army forces waged a crackdown operation in al-Janena region in northern Basra in search for weapons and wanted men,” the commander, who asked to be unnamed, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq (VOI).

“A number of wanted men, including Muayad al-Abdi, tribes official at al-Sadr’s office, were arrested after finding 51 bombs at his house,” he added.

In Kirkuk, a police source said a bodyguard of the general director of the Kirkuk’s agriculture department was wounded on Wednesday by a bomb blast in central Kirkuk, the second in less the hour.
A police source had said earlier a roadside bomb went off in Arafa region in central Kirkuk while a civilian vehicle was passing, wounding two civilians in it.

In Karbala, Chief of local police General Raed Shawkat Jawdat told the VOI that security forces found seven bombs, three missiles and mortar shells and 60 cannonballs in regions in the western desert of the city.

In Missan, a media source said police patrols found on Wednesday amounts of weapons and ammunitions in separate areas in Missan.

“Policemen found amounts of weapons and ammunition in separate areas in Amara,” Colonel Mahdi Hussein told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq (VOI).

“They found 18 rockets, 5 mortar shells, 4 landmines and one Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG), which were handed over to the anti-explosive department,” Hussein added.

In Babel, a security source said that detainees in al-Askanariya jail, north of Hilla, started a hunger strike on Tuesday till further notice until their demands are met.
