16 Taliban Fighters Killed by NATO-Backed Afghani Troops

Afghan troops kill 16 suspected Taliban fighters

    KABUL, April 22 (Xinhua) --

Afghan troops have eliminated 16 alleged Taliban fighters over the past two days in the southernand eastern parts of the country, officials said Tuesday.

    In the first firefight which occurred in Arghistan and Marof districts of southern Kandahar province early Tuesday, nine insurgents were killed, commander of Border police Force in the province Abdul Razaq told Xinhua.

    Seven more fighters were killed in Zarmat district of eastern Paktia province Monday night as international troops carried out air raids on militants, Mastak Khan Zazi, an officer at Press Department of Afghanistan National Army (ANA) in Paktia province told Xinhua.
    Zazi said the insurgents' bodies had been taken to hospital.

    Taliban fighters have yet to make comment.

    More than 400 people mostly civilians have been killed in the fighting between the Afghani Taliban resistance fighters and the NATO occupation forces this year.

Firefight leaves 4 Taliban fighters dead in Afghanistan

    KABUL, April 20 (Xinhua)--

Four Taliban fighters were killed in Afghanistan's southern province Kandahar as they came in contact with government forces over weekend, a local military officer said Sunday.

    The clash took place on Saturday in Panjwai district when the Taliban fighters attacked a convoy of NATO-backed Afghan troops, and the soldiers returned fire, killing four of them, Shirin Shah told Xinhua.

    He also said that there were no casualties on government forces.
    Taliban fighters have not made any comments.

11 Afghan police killed by Taliban attack in S. Afghanistan

    KABUL, April 14 (Xinhua) --

A group of Taliban fighters ambushed and engaged with Afghan police late Sunday night, leaving at least 11 dead in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province, said an official on Monday.

    Amanalullah Khan, the deputy police chief of Kandahar city, the capital of Kandahar province, told Xinhua that Taliban rebels ambushed Afghan police in the Arghandab district of Kandahar city.
    "The investigation is ongoing and we suspected there were some Taliban spies in our police team," Amanalullah said.

    Meanwhile, Qari Yusuf Ahmadi, the purported Taliban spokesman told Xinhua via phone from an unknown hideout that a number of 50 Taliban militants attacked and "completely destroyed" the Afghan police in the overnight battle, leaving at least 14 police dead and two police vehicles burned down.
    "We captured another 15 machine guns from police as well," he added.
