13 killed, wounded in armed attacks in Baghdad

Baghdad - Voices of Iraq
Saturday , 26 /04 /2008  Time 7:48:28

Baghdad, Apr 26, (VOI) –

Three armed operations, one of them by a suicide bomber, took place in different areas of the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Saturday, leaving one man killed and 12 others wounded, police said.

"A suicide bomber detonated his explosive vehicle near a checkpoint of the (US-recruited) Sahwa (Awakening) tribal forces in the area of al-Amiriya, western Baghdad, killing one man and wounding three others," a police source told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

The Sahwa councils were set up in a number of Iraqi provinces such as al-Anbar, Diala, Ninewa, and Salah al-Din with the aim of bolstering political and local tribal powers to fight armed groups, particularly al-Qaeda network, in those areas.

These councils are usually led by tribal chiefs or notables in the provinces.
The Sahwa fighters managed to flush out armed groups from a number of areas once considered strongholds of gunmen for years.

"An improvised explosive device (IED) went off near an Iraqi army checkpoint in the area of al-Suleikh, northern Baghdad, leaving thee servicemen wounded," the source added.

In the central Baghdad's al-Karrada square of al-Wathiq, the source said, gunmen opened trigger-happy fire at pedestrians, wounding six civilians, including three traffic policemen.
Earlier on Saturday, medics in Baghdad said that tight people were killed and 47 others wounded in clashes in Sadr City, eastern Baghdad, during the past 24 hours.

"The Imam Ali hospital in Sadr City received five martyrs and 19 others wounded from 8:00 p.m. on Friday until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. Most of the victims fell in broad daylight as the hospital received only three wounded people during the night," a medic from the hospital told VOI.

Another medic from al-Shahid al-Sadr hospital, also in Sadr City, received three "martyrs" and 28 others wounded.

Sadr City, a stronghold of Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militias, has been witnessing armed clashes since Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced last month the commencement of a security operation codenamed Saulat al-Forsan (Knights' Assault) in the port city of Basra, Iraq's second largest province and an oil-hub, 590 km south of Baghdad, which he said targeted "outlaws".
Hundreds of Sadr supporters were killed or wounded in intense fighting, which still continue so far.

Sadr City clashes leave 8 dead, 47 wounded

Baghdad - Voices of Iraq
Saturday , 26 /04 /2008  Time 7:48:28

Baghdad, Apr 26, (VOI) –

Eight people were killed and 47 others wounded in clashes in Sadr City, eastern Baghdad, during the past 24 hours, medics said on Saturday.

"The Imam Ali hospital in Sadr City received five martyrs and 19 others wounded from 8:00 p.m. on Friday until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. Most of the victims fell in broad daylight as the hospital received only three wounded people during the night," a medic from the hospital told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

Another medic from al-Shahid al-Sadr hospital, also in Sadr City, received three "martyrs" and 28 others wounded.

Sadr City, a stronghold of Shi'i leader Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militias, has been witnessing armed clashes since Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced last month the commencement of a security operation codenamed Saulat al-Forsan (Knights' Assault) in the port city of Basra, Iraq's second largest province and an oil-hub, 590 km south of Baghdad, which he said targeted "outlaws".
Hundreds of Sadr supporters were killed or wounded in intense fighting, which still continue so far.
Sadr on Friday had urged his followers to "observe more patience in commitment to the freeze decision," which he announced eight months ago, stressing that an "open war" he threatened to wage a couple of weeks ago "is meant against the occupiers only."

"You have been patiently committed to the freeze decision and magnificently obeyed your leader. I hope you retain your patience and faith," Sadr said in a statement to his loyalists, read on his behalf by Sheikh Muhannad al-Adhari, the imam of the al-Hikma mosque, in Sadr City during the Friday prayers.
Sadr had ordered a six-month freeze on his Mahdi Army militia activities. He ordered a second six-month hiatus after the first one expired.

In his statement, Sadr said, "I give the Iraqi government the last warning that we would wage an open war until liberation if it failed to rein in the militias infiltrated into it."

"The open war we threaten is meant against the occupiers. There is no war between us and our Iraqi brothers regardless of their sect or ethnicity," Sadr stressed.
He rejected the talks between Iraq and the U.S. administration to clinch a long-term agreement on the future missions of U.S. forces in Iraq.

"We don't want a long-term agreement…we would never accept it no matter how hard we have been fought or even killed," a defiant Sadr said.
"Dear brothers in the Mahdi Army and Iraqi forces, be one hand and stop the bloodshed. Support the resistance in all its forms so that Iraq's lands and people become secure," he added in his statement.

Iraqi lawmaker Liqaa Al-Yassin accuses US forces of using prohibited fissile weapons in Sadr City attacks

Baghdad - Voices of Iraq

Saturday , 26 /04 /2008  Time 7:48:28

Baghdad, Apr 26, (VOI) –

An Iraqi legislator accused the U.S. forces on Saturday of using "internationally-banned weapons" during the military operations in the eastern Baghdad district of Sadr City.

"Cogent (pieces of) evidence were shown by the criminal investigations and forensics' reports that the occupation forces have used fissile arms during the bombardment of Sadr City," Liqaa Al-Yassin, a member of parliament from the Sadrist bloc, or Iraqis loyal to Shi'i leader Muqtada al-Sadr, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

The Sadrists comprise a Shi'i parliamentary bloc that keeps 30 out of a total 275 seats.

"When diffused, fissile bombs hit a large number of targets and spread on the body, which was evidently clear on the bodies of the dead and wounded in Sadr City," Yassin, a member of the Iraqi parliament's Health & Environment Committee, said.

For his part, Abdul-Latif Rayan, the media advisor for the Multi-National Force (MNF) in Iraq, told VOI that the accusations were groundless.

"We only targeted armed groups in Sadr City that fired missiles at the Green Zone in central Baghdad," Rayan said.

Sadr City, a stronghold of Sadr's Mahdi Army militia, has been witnessing armed clashes since (US-backed) Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced last month the commencement of a security operation codenamed Saulat al-Forsan (Knights' Assault) in the port city of Basra, Iraq's second largest province and an oil-hub, 590 km south of Baghdad."

Hundreds of Sadr supporters were killed or wounded in intense fighting, which still continue so far.
