40 Iraqis, US Soldier Killed, Including 24 by US Forces in Sadr City, 8 by Death Squads, According to April 29, 2008 News Reports

Editor's Note:

Only God knows how many Iraqis are killed everyday. The following represents part of the reporting but the actual number of deaths should very much exceed what's reported.

Aljazeera tv reported the death of a US soldier today.

Amsi.org reported that US forces confirmed the news reported by aljazeera tv yesterday that three US soldiers were killed on Monday, increasing the number of US deaths to 43 during April 2008. The official number of deaths since the 2003 US invasion of Iraq has reached 4055.

The Iraq News Agency (INA) confirmed the two pieces of news above, mentioning the death of four US soldiers.

U.S. shelling on Sadr City leaves 84 casualties

Baghdad, Apr 29, (VOI) -

The death toll from the U.S. shelling on Sadr City in the past 6 hours reached 24 dead and 60 wounded, a medical source said on Tuesday.

“The U.S. shelling in sectors 10 and 11 in Sadr City from 11:00 am until 6:00 pm on Tuesday left 24 dead and 60 wounded, most of them women and children,” the source, who asked for anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

Sadr City, a stronghold of Sadr's Mahdi Army militia, has been witnessing armed clashes since (US-backed) Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced last month the commencement of a security operation codenamed Saulat al-Forsan (Knights' Assault) in the port city of Basra, Iraq's second largest province and an oil-hub, 590 km south of Baghdad, which he said targeted "outlaws."

Hundreds of Sadr supporters were killed or wounded in intense fighting, which still continues.

1 policeman killed, 3 civilians wounded in Ninewa

One policeman was killed and three civilians wounded when gunmen opened fire on a police patrol in Mosul on Tuesday, a Ninewa security operations spokesman said. “Gunmen opened fire on a police patrol stationed in Qabr al-Banat neighborhood, west Mosul, leaving one policeman killed and three civilians, who were near the scene of the accident, wounded”, Brig. Khalid Abdel Sattar, spokesman for Ninewa security operations command, told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI). Meanwhile, the spokesman said “police defused a roadside bomb placed on al-Suez roundabout, east Mosul.” AM/SR

Six bodies found southeast of Ba'aqouba

    Ba'aqouba, Apr 29, (VOI) - Six bodies were found in southeast Ba'aqouba on Tuesday, the official spokesman for the Diala Supporting Councils said. “Supporting Councils fighters in Qazaniya region in Baladruz district, southeast of Ba'aqouba, found a mass grave inside al-Midether village, containing six bodies,” Sheikh Sabah Shukr al-Shemri told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI). He did not add more details. Meanwhile, an official source in Diala province, who asked to remain unidentified, confirmed the incident. Ba'aqouba, the capital of Diala, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad. SH/SR

2 unidentified bodies found in Kirkuk

Two unidentified bodies were found on the main road linking Kirkuk to Sulaimaniya on Tuesday, a security source from Kirkuk police said. "The two bodies, of young men between 25 and 30 years of age, had their hands tied and showed signs of having been shot in the head," the source, who refused to have his name revealed, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

The bodies, found near the area of Cheman, on the Kirkuk-Sulaimaniya highway, were taken to a morgue in Kirkuk, the source said, not giving more information. The oil-rich city of Kirkuk, a potpourri of mixed population of ethnic and religious groups, lies 250 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. AE 

3 civilians killed, 3 soldiers wounded in separate incidents in Diala

Three civilians were killed and three Iraqi army soldiers were wounded in two separate attacks in the province of Diala on Tuesday, police said. "Unidentified gunmen opened fire at three civilians in Jalawlaa, Khanaqin district, (185 km) northeast of Baghdad, killing them instantly," a security source, who did not want his name mentioned, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

The same source said an improvised explosive device (IED) went off near an Iraqi army patrol in Baladruz district, (45 km) southeast of Ba'aqouba, wounding three personnel. The wounded were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, he added. Ba'aqouba, the capital of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad. AE

Senior labor ministry official assassinated in Baghdad

A senior Iraqi labor & social affairs ministry official was assassinated by an improvised explosive device (IED) that went off near his home in western Baghdad on Tuesday, a ministry's media advisor said. 

"An IED planted detonated near the house of Eng. Diaa Joudi Jabir in al-Shaljiya neighborhood, western Baghdad, killing him instantly and seriously wounding his son," Abdullah al-Lami told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI). Jabir's son was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, Lami said, urging a quick investigation into the incident. AE

50 unidentified bodies buried in Baaquba

Fifty unidentified bodies were buried in the city of by the Diala morgue authorities on Tuesday, police said. "The Diala morgue, in association with charity foundations, buried 50 unidentified bodies on Tuesday at the al-Sharif cemetery in Baaquba," a police source told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI). Baaquba, the capital of Diala, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad. AE

2 Sahwa fighters killed, 10 wounded in Baaquba

Two (US-recruited) Sahwa (Awakening) tribal fighters were killed and 10 others wounded when a woman bomber waged a suicide attack in the district of Ba'aqouba on Tuesday, police said.

"A bomber blew herself up near a Sahwa headquarters in the village of al-Makhyafa, Baaquba district," a security source, who requested not to be named, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

"The attack left two Sahwa fighters killed and 10 others wounded," the source said, not giving more information. The Sahwa councils were set up in a number of Iraqi provinces such as al-Anbar, Diala, Ninewa, and Salah al-Din with the aim of bolstering political and local tribal powers to fight armed groups, particularly al-Qaeda network, in those areas. These councils are usually led by tribal chiefs or notables in the provinces. AE

2nd IED attack in Kirkuk leaves 7 wounded

Kirkuk, Apr 29, (VOI) –

Five policemen and two civilians were wounded when a second improvised explosive device (IED) in central Kirkuk went off on Tuesday, police said. 

"An IED detonated near a group of stores selling military uniform in central Kirkuk, wounding five policemen and two civilians," the source, who asked not to be named, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

"The wounded were rushed to the Kirkuk public hospital for treatment," the source said, not giving more details. A hospital source said the condition of the wounded men was stable. Earlier on Tuesday, a security source said nine people, including three Iraqi army soldiers, were wounded when an IED went off near an Iraqi patrol in al-Aamal al-Sha'abi neighborhood, western Kirkuk. The oil-rich city of Kirkuk, a potpourri of mixed population of ethnic and religious groups, lies 250 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. AE

Iraqi solider wounded in Mosul

An Iraqi soldier was wounded while resisting an attempted suicide attack that targeted an army headquarters in western Mosul on Tuesday, the official spokesman for the Ninewa operations command said. "An Iraqi soldier was wounded while repulsing a suicide attack with a tank bomb near an army HQ in al-Tanak neighborhood, western Mosul," Brig. Khaled Abdul-Sattar told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

"The bomber tried to draw near the HQ, prompting soldiers to open fire at him but he went on nearly 200 meters away from the military post. One soldier fired an RPG shell, blowing up the tank," the source added. Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad. AE

Nine people, including three Iraqi army soldiers, were wounded when an improvised explosive device went off near an Iraqi patrol in western Kirkuk on Tuesday, a security source said. 

"An IED went in al-Aamal al-Sha'abi neighborhood, western Kirkuk, while an Iraqi army's 5th Brigade patrol was passing by on Tuesday, wounding three army personnel and six civilians," the source, who asked not to have his name mentioned, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

The oil-rich city of Kirkuk, a potpourri of mixed population of ethnic and religious groups, lies 250 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. AE

District chief, 5 escorts wounded in suicide attack

The al-Saadiya district chief and five of his escorts were wounded when a female suicide bomber detonated her explosive belt near his motorcade on Tuesday, a local police source said. 

"The attack occurred near the directorate building of al-Sa'adiya, (45 km) south of Khanaqin district, wounding the district director and five of his escorts, two of them seriously," the source, who declined to be named, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

The wounded were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, the source said, not giving further details. Sa'adiya lies 100 km northeast of Ba'aquba, the capital of Diala province, 57 km northeast of Baghdad. AE

·        US airstrikes target Jaysh al-Mahdi in southwestern Baghdad Monday evening.

Baghdad. 

US airstrikes target Jaysh al-Mahdi in southwestern Baghdad Monday evening. 

In a dispatch posted at 8:05pm Baghdad time Monday evening, the Yaqen News Agency reported that US air craft blasted the ash-Shurtah al-Khamisah area of southwestern Baghdad Monday evening as part of the continued US offensive against the Jaysh al-Mahdi militia. 

Yaqen reported eyewitnesses as saying that the Americans struck strongholds of the anti-occupation Jaysh al-Mahdi militia.  The US forces also cordoned off the area, making information on the nature and extent of casualties as a result of the American airstrikes impossible to obtain. 

The on-going US offensive against the Jaysh al-Mahdi is believed to be in preparation for an eventual American attack on Iran. 

Mortars blast into building near “Green Zone” Monday. 

In a dispatch posted at 3:29pm Makkah time Monday afternoon (4:29pm in Baghdad), Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a number of mortar rounds blasted into the gate of the Iraqi regime planning department that leads to the top security area dubbed the “Green Zone” by the Americans.                          

Mafkarat al-Islam reported that two people were killed and four more wounded in the Monday attack.  All the injured persons were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. 

Bomb kills Electricity Ministry employee in northern Baghdad. 

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 8:28pm Monday evening Beijing time (4:28 in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that a bomb made of plastic explosives blew up a car owned by the Electricity Ministry on ad-Dallal Square in northern Baghdad’s Sunni al-A‘zamiyah district. 

Tribal “Awakening” policeman killed, eight civilians wounded in motorcycle bomber attack in southern Baghdad. 

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 8:28pm Monday evening Beijing time (4:28pm in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that a man driving an explosives-laden motorbike attacked a checkpoint manned by tribal “Awakening” police near the Camp Sarah Intersection near residential buildings in southern Baghdad. 

US attack on weapons truck wounds two civilians in eastern Baghdad. 

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 7:44pm Monday evening Beijing time (3:44pm in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that a US aircraft spotted a Hino truck loaded with Katyusha rockets on al-Qanat Street in eastern Baghdad and fired at the vehicle, destroying it. 

Mortar shells slam into police building in Madinat as-Sadr wounding 10 policemen. 

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 8:28pm Monday evening Beijing time (4:28pm in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that eight mortar shells struck the al-Jaza’ir police station in the impoverished Madinat as-Sadr area of eastern Baghdad. 

Five dead, 10 wounded in Sunday night fighting in Madinat as-Sadr. 

In a dispatch posted at 3:25pm Baghdad time Monday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that US troops together with their Iraqi regime allies battled anti-occupation Jaysh al-Mahdi militiamen in the impoverished Madinat as-Sadr district of Baghdad on Sunday night. 

Yaqen reported a source in the Iraqi Interior Ministry as saying that the fighting left five people dead and 10 more of them wounded.  The fighting raged in the areas of Jamilah, Square 55, and al-Habibiyah in Madinat as-Sadr – a stronghold of support for anti-occupation Shi‘i religious leader Muqtada as-Sadr. 

The US has been pressing its offensive against the Jaysh al-Mahdi for over a month in what is believed to be a preparation for an eventual US attack on Iran. 

Mortar shell blasts into “Green Zone” in downtown Baghdad. 

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 7:03pm Monday afternoon Beijing time (3:03pm in Baghdad, the Xinhua News Agency reported that a mortar shell blasted into the top-security US headquarters district known as the “Green Zone.” 

Xinhua reported a source in the government police as saying that since the “Green Zone” is closed to unauthorized persons, no information on the nature or extent of casualties in the attack was available. 

Xinhua noted that the American command has announced that the majority of mortar shells and Katyusha rockets that are fired into the “Green Zone” are of Iranian manufacture. 

Mortar shells slam into US military post in Baghdad’s al-Baladiyat district. 

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 7:03pm Monday afternoon Beijing time (3:03pm in Baghdad, the Xinhua News Agency reported that three mortar shells landed on a building used as a base by US military forces in Baghdad’s al-Baladiyat district. 

Xinhua reported a source in the government police as saying that the US-occupied building had been the headquarters of the Public Security Service prior to the US invasion.  No information on the nature or extent of casualties was available. 

Mortar shell wounds two civilians in west Baghdad neighborhood. 

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 7:03pm Monday afternoon Beijing time (3:03pm in Baghdad, the Xinhua News Agency reported that a mortar shell landed behind the as-Sa‘ah Restaurant in the upscale al-Mansur neighborhood of western Baghdad. 

Mortar shells strike residential area of eastern Baghdad Sunday evening. 

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 7:03pm Monday afternoon Beijing time (3:03pm in Baghdad, the Xinhua News Agency reported that three mortar rounds landed in the workshops area of the al-‘Ubaydi neighborhood of eastern Baghdad on Sunday evening. 

Xinhua reported a source in the government police as saying that five civilians were wounded in that attack and several private residences were damaged.  The origin and reason for the attack were unknown. 

On Sunday more than 20 mortar shells of unknown origin landed in various parts of Baghdad, killing or wounding at least 19 Iraqis. 

Salah ad-Din Province.

Tikrit. 

Two officers in government police killed in ambush in Tikrit Sunday night. 

In a dispatch posted at 12:08pm Baghdad time midday Monday, the Yaqen News Agency reported that armed men ambushed a patrol of Iraqi government police in the al-‘Asri neighborhood of Tikrit, 180km north of Baghdad on Sunday night. 

Diyala Province.

Ba‘qubah. 

Policeman wounded in attack in Ba‘qubah. 

In a dispatch posted at 5:35pm Baghdad time Monday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that armed men ambushed a detachment of Iraqi regime police in Ba‘aqubah, 65km northeast of Baghdad 

Al-Mansuriyah. 

US, Iraqi regime forces raid al-Mansuriyah area, arresting 12 on Monday. 

In a dispatch posted at 1:35pm Baghdad time Monday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that US troops accompanied by their Iraqi army allies carried out raids, searches, and arrests in the al-Mansuriyah area, 90km northeast of Baghdad on Monday. 

Ninwa Province.

Al-Mawsil. 

Policeman gunned down in al-Mawsil. 

In a dispatch posted at 10:50pm Baghdad time Monday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that armed men opened fire on a policeman in front of his house on an-Najafi Street in al-Mawsil, 420km northwest of Baghdad. 

Two policemen wounded in rocket-propelled grenade attack in al-Mawsil. 

In a dispatch posted at 10:50pm Baghdad time Monday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that men armed with a rocket-propelled grenade fired at a police patrol in the Dawrat al-Hamam in eastern al-Mawsil, 420km northwest of Baghdad. 

Iraqi army soldier killed, three persons arrested in al-Mawsil Monday. 

In a dispatch posted at 2:01pm Baghdad time Monday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that gunmen clashed with Iraqi government troops in the Tall ar-Rumman area to the west of al-Mawsil, 420km northwest of Baghdad on Monday. 

Yaqen reported a source in the Iraqi army as saying that one government soldier was killed in the skirmish. 

Al-Basrah Province.

Al-Basrah. 

Gunmen assassinate information officer with Sadr Office in al-Basrah under noses of Iraqi regime troops. 

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 4:38pm Monday afternoon Beijing time (12:38pm in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that armed men assassinated a member of the Sadr Office in the southern Iraqi city of al-Basrah, where US and Iraqi regime forces have been pressing an offensive against the anti-occupation Shi‘i religious organization since late March. 

Xinhua reported a source in the Sadr Office in al-Basrah as saying that gunmen in a late-model car opened fire on ‘Ali Ghazi, a local Sadr official in charge of information in the al-Hakimiyah district of the city, killing him on the spot. 

The attackers fled the scene after the murder, the source said, adding that it was amazing that the US-backed deploys large numbers of troops throughout the city on the pretext that the Sadr Movement is destabilizing the situation, and yet criminal gangs continue operate in the city and carry out such murders. 

The American-backed offensive against the Sadr Movement and its Jaysh al-Mahdi militia is believed to be a preparation for an eventual US attack on Iran.
