US Soldier, 42 Iraqis killed, Sunni Sahwa Fighters Refuse to Obey Maliki to Fight Shi'is, According to April 4, 2008 News Reports

The Iraq News Agency (INA) reported that a UN report in Amman mentioned that the Maliki assault on Basra and Sadr City resulted in the killing of 700 Iraqis and the injury of 1,500 more.

- The number of people killed in a suicide bombing in Sa'adiya reached 20 people, not 15 as VOI reported below. Sixteen more were injured.
- Maliki asked the US-recruited Sunni fighters, called Sahwa, to fight the Shi'i Mahdi Army militia in Al-Shu'ala area in Baghdad. They refused, according to MP Al-Araji.

- Sunni Muslim Iraqis from Mosul, Tikrit, and Falloujah sent support and supplies to their Shi'i brothers and sisters in Basra, other southern cities, and Sadr City, who were attacked by US-backed Maliki forces. The civilian population in these areas are suffering from a disastrous situation, and they need humanitarian assistance as soon as possible.

38 killed, 31 wounded in acts of violence until Friday afternoon

A total of 38 persons were killed and 31 others were wounded, while 25 persons were arrested in acts of violence throughout Iraq until Friday afternoon, security sources said on Friday.
In Baghdad, the U.S. forces, in cooperation with Iraqi security forces, killed 13 persons and arrested 16 others during operations throughout Iraq in the past few hours.

The U.S. army said on Friday one U.S. soldier was killed in an improvised explosive device blast that target his patrol in the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Thursday.
The death brings up to 4013 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq since the March 2003 U.S.-led invasion. Of this number, 38 were killed in March and 29 in February and 40 in January 2008.
In Kirkuk, the police released 30 detainees from Kirkuk detentions centers after they had been proven not guilty in involvement in any criminal acts.

In Mosul, the official spokesman for the Ninewa operations Brigadier Khaled Abdul Sattar said that one policeman was killed and another one was injured in two bomb blasts in two separate areas in Mosul.
In Basra, the U.S. army said that its forces killed six gunmen and arrested nine others in separate operation conducted in four provinces.

In Ba'aqouba, A police source said sixteen people were killed in a suicide attack that targeted a funerary procession northeast of Baghdad on Friday.

Sixteen people were killed in a suicide attack that targeted a funerary procession northeast of Baghdad on Friday, an official police source said. 

"A suicide bomber attacked a funerary procession of a policeman in the area of al-Sa'adiya, northeast of the Iraqi capital, killing 16 mourners," the source, who declined to have his name mentioned, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

Saadiya is an area 30 km west of the district of Khanaqin on the joint borders with Iran.

MNF killed 13, captured 16 in security operations – U.S.

The Multi-National Force (MNF) troops, in tandem with Iraqi security forces, killed 13 gunmen and captured 16 others in separate operations in Iraq, the U.S. army said on Friday.

"Coalition aircraft conducted a precision strike on a vehicle equipped with a heavy machine gun in al-Halaf, destroying the vehicle and killing six armed (Iraqis)," the U.S. army said in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

"After receiving reports of heavy machine gun fire, Coalition forces employed an unmanned aerial vehicle to observe, confirm and conduct the airstrike on the vehicle. Six armed criminals were confirmed killed in the precision airstrike."

In another statement the U.S. army said, "Iraqi Security Forces, advised by U.S. Special Forces, killed seven (Iraqi)l members and detained 16 others during three separate operations in Basra directed by the Government of Iraq April 3."

"In a third operation in Basra, an Iraqi Emergency Response Unit captured two suspected members of an (Iraqi) cell linked to an ambush attempt against U.S. SF soldiers April 2. Three other suspects are being held for further questioning."

U.S. army says soldier killed in Baghdad

A U.S. soldier was killed in an improvised explosive device blast that target his patrol in the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Thursday, the U.S. army said on Friday.

"A Multi-National Division – Baghdad Airman was killed at approximately noon in an improvised explosive device attack in central Baghdad April 3. The Airman was on a patrol, when the IED attack occurred," the U.S. army said in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

Police kill gunman while planting bomb in Mosul

Mosul, Apr 4, (VOI)-

Policemen killed a gunman while planting an explosive charge in western Mosul, the official spokesman for the Ninewa operations said on Friday.

“Police forces killed a gunman while planting a bomb in al-Islah al-Zeraiee region in western Mosul,” Brig. Khaled Abdul Sattar told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq (VOI).

“He was accompanied by another gunman, who managed to flee the area,” the officer noted.
“The forces sent the body to the forensic medicine department in Mosul,” he also said.
Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, is 405 km north of Baghdad.

3 civilians killed in airstrike in Basra

The forensic medicine department in Basra received on Friday afternoon three civilian corpses, including two children, said a medical source.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that a number of civilians were killed or wounded in an airstrike conducted by Multi National Forces' (MNF) jetfighter in western Basra.
British military source did not deny the operation.
"Basra morgue received three civilian dead bodies, including two kids," the source told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

He did not mention any further details.
Resident of al-Hussein neighborhood, 8 km west of Basra city, said "fierce clashes took place between MNF and Iraqi army troops on one side, and Mahdi Army fighters on the other side, inside al-Hussein neighborhood."

The eyewitness added "Jetfighters joined the battle, and one of them bombarded a residential house with a missile, killing or wounding all the family members who were in the house, including three kids, in addition to injuring a number if civilians in the area."

From his side, Captain Cress Ford, media spokesperson of the British Forces, said "one MNF jetfighter shelled gunmen at al-Hussein area, to support Iraqi security forces that became under gunmen's fire."

"The jetfighter interfered to restrain gunmen," Ford asserted, without revealing further details.

U.S. forces kill 2 gunmen, arrest 16 in Iraq

U.S. forces killed two armed men and arrested 16 suspected al-Qaeda gunmen during operations targeted al-Qaeda armed group in central and northern Iraq, the U.S. army said on Friday.

West of Samarra, Coalition forces targeted an individual allegedly tied to a senior al-Qaeda in Iraq – or AQI . During the operation, the wanted individual attempted to breach the security perimeter and was wounded by small-arms fire from the security element. Despite Coalition forces’ efforts in treating the man, he later died of his wounds. Seven suspected (Iraqis) were detained in the operation,” the U.S. army said in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq (VOI).

“Two coordinated operations focused on the AQI bombing network. During an operation in Shurqat, the ground force called for occupants of the target building to come out. One man who was initially compliant began to ignore Coalition forces’ instructions and attempted to retrieve something from under his clothing. Perceiving hostile intent, Coalition forces engaged, killing the man. Three suspected (Iraqis) were detained at the scene. Farther south, the ground forces detained two more suspects in the second operation,” the statement added.

“In Habbaniyah, Coalition forces detained three suspected (Iraqis) allegedly tied to the car-bombing network north of Baghdad. One suspect was injured as the ground forces breached a door on the target building, but was treated on scene and transported to a military medical facility,” it added.

“In Mosul, Coalition forces detained a suspect believed to be closely tied to AQI senior leaders there,” the statement also said.

3 gunmen killed in central, northern Iraq – U.S. army

The U.S. army said on Friday that its forces killed three suspected al-Qaeda gunmen, including a suicide bomber, and arrested four others during operations targeted al-Qaeda in Iraq armed group in central and northern Iraq.

“Coalition forces killed three (Iraqis), including a would-be suicide bomber, while targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq operatives in central and northern Iraq Thursday,” the U.S. army said in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq (VOI).

“Four suspected (Iraqis) were also detained during the course of operations.
East of Mahmoudiya, Coalition forces on Thursday targeted an individual allegedly planning to carry out a suicide bombing attack in conjunction with the Baghdad car-bombing network. During the operation, three men in a vehicle attempted to elude the assault force, and Coalition forces engaged to stop the vehicle. All three men in the vehicle were killed, including the alleged suicide bomber,” the statement added.

“While targeting a bombing coordinator in Mosul, Coalition forces detained one suspected terrorist,” it added.

“Coalition forces conducted a precision operation in northwest Sinjar, capturing a suspected foreign facilitator with alleged ties to al-Qaeda in Iraq – or AQI – senior leaders. As the ground force approached, the wanted individual shot himself in the leg while drawing his weapon to engage Coalition forces. He was treated on scene and transported to a military medical facility. In a similar raid, the ground force captured another alleged associate of AQI senior leaders, as well as an additional suspect west of Baghdad,” the statement continued.
