3 US Soldiers Killed, 31 Injured, 62 Iraqis Killed, Scores Injured, in War Attacks, According to April 6, 2008 News Reports

Only God knows how many Iraqis are killed everyday. The following is a summary of what the government news agency, VOI, daily. Readers also may find few headlines of attacks reported by few independent news agencies. What's certain is that the number of Iraqis killed everyday exceeds what's reported.


The Iraq News Agency (INA) reported that an attack on the Green Zone with rockets resulted in killing two US soldiers and injuring 17 others. In another attack in Baghdad, a third US Soldier was killed, 14 were injured.

In Sadr City, 22 Iraqis were killed, 55 were injured, as a result of fighting between US forces and Mahdi Army militia.

amsi.org reported that four policemen and an engineer were killed in Khaniqeen, east of Ba'aqouba.


Yaqen.net reported that three US soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb destroying their vehicle in Kana'an area, near Ba'aqouba today. However, US forces admitted only one soldier was killed in the attack, as mentioned below by the Iraqi semi-official news agency, VOI.

Media advisor at the Multi-National forces Abdullatif Rayan on Sunday said a service member was killed in a blast in Diala province, central Iraq, while an Iraqi security source put the number of the U.S. soldiers killed in the same incident at 3. 

"A U.S. soldier was killed today in a roadside bomb blast in Diala," Abdullatif Rayan told Aswat al-Iraq- Voices of Iraq- (VOI). The U.S. media advisor gave no further details on the incident. Earlier, an Iraqi security source told VOI "three U.S. soldiers were killed today when an explosive charge detonated near their vehicle patrol on the main road in Kinaan district near Ba'aqouba." Ba'aqouba, capital city of Diala province, is 57 km northeast of Baghdad. SK 

20 killed, 53 wounded in Sadr City clashes

Baghdad, Apr 6, (VOI) –

Twenty people were killed and 53 others wounded in the clashes that erupted in Sadr City, eastern Baghdad, between U.S. forces and armed groups since Saturday, an Iraqi medic said on Sunday.

"Women and children were among the wounded, according to statistics registered by al-Sadr, Imam Ali and al-Hubaybiya hospitals," the medic, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

A media source from Shi'i leader Muqtada al-Sadr's office said five civilians from the same family were killed and a number of stores were burned in U.S. attacks that targeted Sadr City on Sunday.

"A man, his wife and three children were killed when a missile landed on their house," the Sadrist source said, not revealing the names of the slain family members or further details.

Inhabitants of Sadr City had said armed confrontations erupted earlier on Sunday in a number of neighborhoods between joint Iraqi-U.S. forces and armed groups, leaving casualties.

A spokesman for the Multi-National Force (MNF) had said a U.S. warplane killed nine gunmen he termed as "criminals" in the city.

Eyewitnesses from Sadr City told VOI that joint Iraqi-U.S. troops pushed deep last night into a number of Sadr City neighborhoods near a fuel station, adding clashes were still continuing.

Ten days ago armed clashed broke out in Baghdad and other southern provinces between government forces and groups of Sadr's Mahdi Army militias hours after Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced the commencement of Operation Saulat al-Forsan (Knights' Assault), which he said aimed at eliminating armed groups in the oil-rich port city of Basra, 590 km south of Baghdad.

Gunman killed, 22 suspects captured – MNF

One gunman was killed and 22 alleged members of al-Qaeda network were captured in separate security raids in central and northern Iraq on Sunday, the Multi-National Force (MNF) said.

 "MNF troops killed a gunman involved in attacking Sahwa (Awakening) tribal fighters in Anbar province after clashes in one of the buildings in Baghdad," according to an MNF statement received by Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

"The MNF force also arrested eight gunmen who were with him," it read. In Baghdad, the MNF captured a man suspected of involvement with a leader of al-Qaeda Organization in Iraq. In another operation, three gunmen were arrested in Baiji, Salah al-Din province, one of them believed to have links with organizations financing and facilitating arms for al-Qaeda. In three separate operations in Mosul, the capital of Ninewa province, the MNF captured 10 gunmen suspected of involvement with al-Qaeda. AE

IED blast kills 1, wounds 4 south of Ba'aquba

Diala, Apr 6, (VOI) –

One civilian man was killed and four others wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off near their vehicle south of Baaquba on Sunday, a security source said.

"An IED detonated on a street in the area of Abu Khmeis, Buhrez district, (5 km) south of Baaquba, near a civilian vehicle, killing one and wounding four others," the source, who did not want to be named, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

Ba'aqouba, the capital of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

17 gunmen killed, 52 suspects arrested during past 24 hours

Arbil, Apr 6, (VOI) –

Iraqi army forces killed 17 gunmen and captured 52 others in different areas of Iraq during the past 24 hours, according to an Iraqi Defense Ministry statement on Sunday.

"The Iraqi army soldiers also managed to defuse 11 improvised explosive devices in Baghdad, Mosul, Salah al-Din, Diala, and Kirkuk," read the statement received by Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI). "The Iraqi troops conducted several search raids and intensified patrols and checkpoints all over Iraq," it added.

 Nine gunmen killed in Sadr city-U.S. army

Baghdad, Apr 6, (VOI)-

The U.S. army said on Sunday a U.S. copter killed nine “criminals” in Sadr City, the stronghold of the Shiite cleric Moiqtada al-Sadr’s followers in Baghdad.

Media Advisor at the Multi-National Forces Abdellatif Rayan told Aswat al-Iraq- Voices of Iraq- (VOI) "We do have reports of an air weapons team engagement, a U.S. helicopter, were nine (Iraqis) were killed at around 8:00 a.m." Earlier, an eyewitness said that clashes erupted between Iraqi troops, backed by U.S. forces, in parts of Sadr City. As for the reported clashes, Rayan said "We have no reports of clashes with members of the Madhi Army in Sadr City at this time." SK

9 killed, 7 kidnapped in Iraq violence   Arbil - Voices of Iraq

Arbil, Apr 6, (VOI) –

Nine people were killed, seven civilians were abducted, 42 kidnapped citizens were released, and four suspects were arrested in violent acts that took place throughout Iraq over the past 18 hours, from Saturday 9:30 pm until Sunday 3:30 pm, security sources said.

In Baghdad, Abdul-Lateef Rayan, media counselor for the Multi National Forces (MNF) in Iraq told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI) that a U.S. helicopter killed on Sunday 8:00 am nine criminal terrorists in Sadr city, east of Baghdad.

Earlier, eyewitnesses from Sadr city said to VOI that armed confrontations erupted in some of the city's neighborhoods, between a combined Iraqi-U.S. force and gunmen, causing casualties.

From their side, the MNF said that they do not know about the clashes, and will reveal information in case they are available.

In Mosul, Brigadier Khalid Abdul-Sattar, official spokesperson for Ninewa operations command, said that unknown gunmen stopped a bus carrying Mosul University students, at the main road that connects the Iraqi capital Baghdad to Mosul city, at al-Gern intersection, 15 km south of Mosul.

They forced the passengers to leave the bus under gun threat, and they took all of them, 42 students, away in the direction of al-Jarthee village of Hamam al-Aleel suburb, 35 km south of Mosul.

Security forces, as Abdul-Sattar later informed VOI, were able to release all the 42 students, confirming that Ninewa operations command will hold a press conference to explain the details in this regard.

In Salah al-Din, an authorized police source said that unidentified armed men kidnapped seven electricity sector's employees, on Saturday's evening, at Tal-El-Dhahab village of Yathreb district, east of Balad suburb, when the employees were doing maintenance work on power transfer lines that were devastated due to climatic conditions.

No further information is yet known about the kidnapped employees.

In Kirkuk, a police source said that two roadside bombs detonated on Sunday, at the city's center and southern part, without causing any casualties.

In Diala, an authorized security source said that a combined Iraqi army – police force conducted on Saturday a raid operation at a number of areas of Bani-Sa'sd suburb, 30 km north of Baghdad.

Four wanted al-Qaeda fighters were arrested in the operation.

In Wassit, a source from the border police said that security forces were able to defuse four roadside bombs that were planted by unknowns at a road outside the province, while a weapons cache was found in another place nearby.

In Babel province, an authorized security source said that unknown gunmen set the Sadr Entity's Cultural Office on fire, in Mhezim area, at the center of Hilla city, without causing casualties, but the building was severely damaged.
