Israeli peace activists forced out of Hebron by Israeli occupation army; locals disappointed
Date: 14 / 12 / 2008  Time:  11:41
Bethlehem - Ma’an/Agencies –

Israeli occupation  forces prevented busloads of Israeli peace activists from entering the West Bank city of Hebron Saturday morning.

According to Gush Shalom, the group that organized the event, more than a hundred Israeli peace activists were blocked by army and police at the entrance to Hebron, and prevented from visiting the city and meeting with the mayor and with Palestinian inhabitants whose homes were set on fire by settlers a week ago.

One activist was detained after attempting to argue with Israeli police about whether or not the group should be allowed into the area.

The activists said Israeli police cars tailed the busses from Jerusalem, and prevented the group from accessing roads leading into Hebron.

The group expressed indignation over the fact that Israeli forces and police protect the 700 illegal Israeli settlers living in the Palestinian city hundreds of whom participated in a violent riot on 4 November, and repeatedly refused to allow passage to a group of peace activists.

The group of Israelis had contacted local Palestinian officials in Hebron to arrange the solidarity visit, Palestinian governor of Hebron and a large group of Hebronites were awaiting their arrival in the Town Hall in the center of the city.

While one activist in a private car managed to make it to the Town Hall, the two busses were forced to turn back. They telephoned the town Mayor to apologize for being unable to visit the city, and said they would do their best to continue solidarity efforts.
