37 Iraqis Killed in War Attacks, Including 25 Executed by Death Squads, According to February 12 News Reports

Yaqen.net news agency reported the following news today:

- A car bomb exploded in Hitt city targeting government forces and resulting in a number of casualties.

- 2 US-recruited Sahwa fighters were killed, two were injured by a roadside bomb targeting their vehicle in Huwaija, Kirkuk.

- 2 Iraqi soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb targeting their convoy in Al-Shurqat, north of Baghdad.

-  A policeman was killed during clashes between government forces and Iraqi fighters in al-Shurqat.

- US military base of Al-Tharthar, northeast of Al-Ramadi was attacked with two katyousha rockets today.

    Baghdad, Feb 12, (VOI)-

Iraqi police patrols on Tuesday found four corpses, including the body of an Iraqi journalist’ dumped in different parts of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, an Interior Ministry source said. "Police patrols found three unknown corpses and the body of Iraqi journalist dumped in various parts of Baghdad," the source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq -Voices of Iraq - (VOI). The source added "Three bodies were found in Baghdad's eastern neighborhoods of al-Bonook, Zayuna, and Bab al-Sheikh, while the fourth body was found in al-Yarmouk quarter, western Baghdad." "The bodies found bore signs of gunshot wounds to different parts of the body, mainly to the head," he noted. AM/SR

    Diala, Feb 12, (VOI) –

Joint Iraqi-U.S. forces found 13 unidentified bodies in the district of al-Muqdadiya, 35 km northeast of Baaquba, on Tuesday, a security source said. "The bodies were decayed and showed signs of having been shot," the source, who declined to be named, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI). During the early hours of Tuesday, a Diala police force found seven unidentified bodies in the province. Baaquba, the capital of Diala, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad. AE

Diala, Feb 12, (VOI)-

Police patrols on Tuesday found seven unknown bodies in Diala province, central Iraq, while four car bombs were defused last night in the province, a security source said.

"Police forces found seven unidentified bodies during a search campaign launched, today at dawn, in some villages near Baaquba," the source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq- Voices of Iraq- (VOI). The source added that the bodies had gunshot wounds to different parts of the body. Baaquba, capital city of Diala province, is 57 km northeast of Baghdad. Meanwhile, the same source said that police forces defused four car bombs, last night, in Khan Bani Saad district, 20 km south of Baaquba. Also last night, Balad Roz local police arrested two suspected gunmen, believed to be from al-Qaeda network, according to the same security source. Balad Roz, a district within Diala province, is 45 km southwest of Baaquba. SK

Police find dead civilian, discover weapons cache in Ninewa

    Ninewa, Feb 12, (VOI)- Unknown gunmen killed a civilian in Mosul on Tuesday, a spokesman for Ninewa operations command said. "Unknown gunmen shot a civilian in front of his house in Ras al-Jadda neighborhood, western Mosul," Brig. Khalid Abdel Sattar, spokesman for Ninewa operations command told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).

The spokesman added "The gunmen planted two improvised explosive devices in front of the victim’s house following his death, yet Ninewa police managed to defuse them and delivered the corpse to the morgue."

The security official did not provide further information, but said the victim worked as a nurse at Mosul’s public hospital. Meanwhile, Abdel Sattar added that second brigade of army 2nd division uncovered a cache of weapons and ammunition at al-Nakhwa village of Talafar district, west Mosul.

"The cache- containing mortar rounds, Katyusha missile, artillery ammunition and RPG launchers- was found based on tips admitted from one of the suspects who was previously detained," he highlighted. Mosul, the capital of Ninewa province, lies 402 north of Baghdad AM/SR  

Police shoot gunman to death in Anbar

    Ramadi, Feb 12, (VOI)-

Police forces on Tuesday shot and killed a gunman and found an amount of weapons in northern Ramadi, a police source said. "Police forces killed a gunman from al-Qaeda's the Islamic State of Iraq during a security operation waged this afternoon in al-Tharthar region in northern Ramadi," the source, who asked to remain anonymous, told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).

"The forces also found an amount of mortars, Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG) and Kalashnikovs," he noted, adding no more details. Ramadi, the capital of Anbar, is 110 km west of Baghdad. SH/SR  

Civilian killed in explosion in Mosul

    Mosul, Feb 12, (VOI) -

One civilian was killed on Tuesday in an explosive charge explosion targeting a U.S. vehicle patrol in western Mosul, a security source said. "An improvised explosive device went off targeting a U.S. vehicle patrol in al-Islaah al-Zera'aei region in western Mosul, killing a passing civilian," the source told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI) on condition of anonymity.

The region is one of the hot spots in Mosul and witnesses security instability. Mosul, the capital of Diala, is 405 km north of Baghdad. SH/SR

Journalist's body found in Baghdad   Baghdad - Voices of Iraq

    Baghdad, Feb 12, (VOI) –

Policemen found the body of an Iraqi journalist two days after he disappeared in central Baghdad, the chief of the young journalists league said on Tuesday. "The body of journalist Hisham Majout Hamdan was removed to a morgue on Tuesday morning after being found by Iraqi policemen in the area of Bab al-Sheikh, central Baghdad," Haider Hassoun told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

"Hamdan has gone out of the league headquarters to buy stationery from Baghdad markets on Sunday but disappeared and we knew nothing about him until his body was found at the morgue today," Hassoun said. Hamdan, 27, a member of the league, was married and had two children. He worked for al-Siyassa Wa al-Qarar and al-Akhbar newspapers after the fall of the former regime. The Journalistic Freedoms Observatory (JFO), in a statement, said that with the "killing of Hamdan, the total number of Iraqi and foreign media people killed since 2003 has reached 230."

"Of this number, 125 journalists and 51 technicians and assistants were killed over their press activities while ambiguity is surrounding the other criminal operations that targeted journalists and technicians indirectly not due to their press work," the JFO said. Some 62 journalists and assistants were kidnapped and mostly killed but still 14 of them are considered missing, the JFO statement read. The Iraqi press watchdog offered condolences to Hamdan's family and workers at the young journalists league. AE  

3 al-Qaeda members killed, 11 captured in clashes west of Karbala

Karbala, Feb 12, (VOI) – Karbala policemen killed three members of al-Qaeda, captured 11 others and seized a car bomb in clashes west of Karbala during the early hours of Tuesday, a security official said.

"Our security forces carrying out Operation Diaa (Light) killed three (alqaeda fighters) in armed clashes north of Ayn al-Tamr district, (120 km) west of Karbala," Maj. General Raed Shakir Jawdat, the Karbala chief of operations and police director, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).  AE

Policeman killed, 2 wounded in attack in Basra

Basra, Feb 12, (VOI) –

A policeman was killed and two others wounded in an armed attack in southern Basra province on Tuesday morning, an official police source said.

"Unidentified gunmen in a vehicle opened drive-by fire at a police car on the Muhaijaran-Bahadriya highway, (10 km) southern Basra, killing one policeman and injuring two others," the source, who did not want to be named, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

"The gunmen then escaped to an unknown place," the source said, not giving more details about the incident. The oil-rich port city of Basra lies 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. AE
