21 Iraqis Killed in War Attacks, 142 Corpses Found in Miqdadiya, Baghdad Markets Death Toll Increased to 99, According to February 2, 2008 News Reports

Editor's Note:

The semi-official Voices of Iraq news agency refers to Iraqi fighters who oppose US forces as Al-Qaeda members, justify the usage of the term on mere suspicion, as in the February 2, 2008 news report. The truth is that there are many organizations, other than Al-Qaeda in Iraq, fighting against US forces and US-led Iraqis forces.

- US forces shell parts of the city of Al-Miqdadiya with artillery.
- US-recruited Sahwa fighters kill an Iraqi man in Shirqat.
- Mahdi Army militiamen, using government vehicle and receiving assistance from the police, assassinated Imam of Al-Furqan Mosque, Hatem Muhammed, in Ba'aqouba.
-  US base in Al-Tharthar was attacked with four mortars today.

The Iraq News Agency (INA) reported that:

- A convoy of the Deputy Dean of Baghdad University Medical College was attacked today, which resulted in killing two of his guards. The Dean was killed earlier.
- 22 Iraqis were tortured then killed by British soldiers in Amara, four years ago. Their relatives are suing soldiers in a London court.

Iraq amsi reported that 142 corpses were found in Al-Miqdadiya belonging to Iraqis who were executed by death squads last year.

13 al-Qaeda members killed, captured in central, northern Iraq – U.S. army

Baghdad, Feb 2, (VOI) –

U.S. army soldiers killed and captured 13 suspected members of al-Qaeda in military operations on Friday and Saturday that targeted the armed network in central and northern Iraq, the U.S. army said.

"U.S. soldiers captured a gunman and destroyed his vehicle in an operation northeast of Samarra city on Friday and killed one gunman and captured two others after clashes with members of al-Qaeda who were in an underground hideout outside Samarra," the U.S. army said in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

"On Saturday one al-Qaeda member and another gunman suspected of involvement in smuggling weapons from outside Iraq were arrested west of al-Mahmoudiya, southern Baghdad," the statement read.

Seven suspected gunmen were also captured in an operation north of al-Tarimiya while targeting a key leader of al-Qaeda in the city, the statement added.

"Another alleged member of an armed propaganda cell with al-Qaeda was captured in the district of Baiji, near Samarra. The man, according, intelligence reports, is involved in providing propaganda and media material."

Police forces killed four gunmen of Arab nationalities and arrested a senior al-Qaeda leader during clashes in northeastern Samarra, a local police source said on Saturday.

"Four gunmen of Arab nationalities were killed and a key leader in al-Qaeda organization called Safaa Muhammad Abdullah al-Khadawi, nicknamed Abu Yasser, who is accused of killing dozens of local residents, was arrested in Samarra," the source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq, Voices of Iraq, (VOI).

"At an early hour on Saturday morning, an emergency force from Samarra police raided an al-Qaeda hideout in al-Jalam area and engaged in violent clashes with the gunmen there," the source explained.

A large amount of arms and several vehicles were seized during the raid, the source added.
The source neither indicated whether any casualties were reported on the security forces' side nor revealed the nationalities of those arrested.

Samarra, a city affiliated with Salah al-Din province, lies 100 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

3 gunmen killed, 3 arrested in Talafar clashes

Ninewa, Feb 2, (VOI) –

Policemen killed three gunmen, including a leader, and arrested three others in clashes north of the district of Talafar, Ninewa province, during the early hours of Saturday, police said.

"A Talafar police force clashed on Saturday morning with gunmen of al-Qaeda network, killing three of them and arresting three others in Tolabashi village, north of Talafar," Brig. Ibrahim al-Juburi, the Talafar police chief, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).
Talafar lies 60 km west of Mosul, the capital of Ninewa province, 405 km north of Baghdad.

Blast kills four Sahwa fighters, wounds nine in Shirqat

At least four (US-recruited) government-backed-Sahwa fighters were killed and nine others wounded on Saturday when a roadside bomb detonated near their vehicle patrol in Shirqat, north of Baghdad, a police source said.

"A roadside bomb detonated, this morning, near a Sahwa fighters' vehicle patrol in Tal Mohammed quarter in al-Shirqat district, killing four Sahwa fighters and wounding nine," the source, who asked to be unnamed, told Aswat al-Iraq –Voices of Iraq- (VOI).

The source added "the explosion also damaged some of the patrol vehicles."

"Security forces sealed off the scene while ambulances rushed the wounded to a nearby hospital," he said.
 
U.S. and Iraqi government backed-Sahwa councils are groups of (US-recruited) tribesmen who fought on the side of the government against Qaeda network in the Sunni majority areas in Iraq.
Shirqat, a district within Salah al-Din province, lies 320 km north of Baghdad.

Security forces on Friday killed three gunmen believed to be al-Qaeda network operatives following clashes in Samarra, the city police said.

“police patrols clashed with a group of gunmen believed to be al-Qaeda network operatives in al-Sikak neighbourhood, central Samarra, killing three gunmen and capturing a fourth”, A Samarra police source ,who preferred to be anonymous, told Aswat al-Iraq-Voices of Iraq(VOI).

He added “police seized a number of BKC guns, a sniper and set a gunmen’s vehicle ablaze”.
Samarra of Salah al-Din province lies 100 km north of Baghdad.

Three unidentified bodies found in Baghdad

Baghdad, Feb 1, (VOI)-

Iraqi police patrols found three unidentified bodies dumped in different parts of the Iraqi capital Baghdad during the last 24 hours, an interior ministry source said on Friday.
"Police patrols found three unknown corpses dumped in various parts of Baghdad," the source, who asked to remain unnamed, told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).
The source added "two bodies were found in al-Qahera and Jisr Diala neighborhoods in Baghdad's eastern side of Rasafa, while the third body was found in al-Bayaa neighborhood, western Baghdad."
"The bodies bore signs of gunshot wounds to different parts of the body, mainly to the head," he noted.

Casualties from Baghdad's market blasts reach 99 dead, 145 wounded

Baghdad, Feb 2, (VOI) –

Casualties from the bombings that ripped through two pet markets in central and southern Baghdad on Friday have reached 99 dead and 145 wounded, Iraqi police said.

"The toll from the explosion that targeted a large gathering of civilians in downtown Baghdad's al-Ghazal market has reached 62 dead and 88 wounded," a police source told Aswat al-Iraq, Voices of Iraq, (VOI).

"Meanwhile, casualties from the blast that tore through Baghdad al-Jadida pet markets in southern Baghdad have risen to 37 dead and 57 wounded," the source added, attributing the increase in casualties to the severity of the injuries.

On Friday, the Iraqi Ministry of Health said that the toll from the two bombings that ripped through the Iraqi capital's pet markets of al-Ghazal and Baghdad al-Jadida reached 59 dead and 174 wounded.
