41 Iraqis Killed in War Attacks, Including 3 Executed by Death Squads, According to February 23, 2008 News Reports

Aljazeera tv reported at 10:10 am ET that 15 Al-Qaeda in Iraq fighters were killed west of Samarra and 3 were killed in Mosul.

Yaqen.net reported the following today:

-  A Falloujah (US-backed) Sahwa commander and two of his guards were killed in Al-Falloujah.

- British lawyers are defending five Iraqi civilians who were tortured in May 2004 by British soldiers following a fighting with gunmen in Al-Majar village. They were taken to the British base in Abu Naji for interrogation, where they were tortured and 20 innocent Iraqi workers were killed during interrogation.

- Al-Riyadh joint US-Iraqi military base was attacked with rockets today.

- Three bodies of Iraqis executed by death squads were found in Diala river, Ba'aqouba.

- US base in Al-Tharthar, north of Al-Ramadi, was directly hit with a Grad rocket.

Six policemen, seven gunmen killed in clashes near Falluja

Falluja, Feb 23, (VOI)-

Six Iraqi policemen and seven gunmen were killed on Saturday when gunmen, believed from Qaeda, attacked four police stations near Falluja city in western Iraq, a local police source said.

"Qaeda fighters launched concerted attacks, this morning, against four police stations in different parts of al-Saqlawiya district, 15 km north of Falluja," the source, who asked not to be named, told Aswat al-Iraq- Voices of Iraq- (VOI).

The source added that the clashes left "six policemen and seven gunmen dead."
"Two more policemen were injured in the clashes," he added.
According to the source, the gunmen used Kalashnikovs and hand grenades in the attacks.
Falluja, a Sunni city, lies 45 km west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Fortified Green Zone came under attack

Baghdad, Feb 23, (VOI)-

The fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad was mortared on Saturday morning, while outlets leading to the zone were sealed off by Iraqi forces after the attack, a police source said.

"Seven mortar rounds fell onto the Green Zone in early Saturday with no immediate reports available on casualties or damage," the source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq –Voices of Iraq- (VOI).

The source added that Karada outlets leading to the zone were all sealed off by Iraqi police forces after the attack while vehicles were banned from movement inside Karada.
An eyewitness told VOI "seven explosions were heard in succession while sirens were heard allover the area and warnings were made to people through loudspeakers."
The Green Zone in central Baghdad is the seat of the Iraqi government offices and the compound of the U.S. and British embassies.

Truck driver wounded in explosion near Kirkuk

Kirkuk, Feb 22, (VOI)-

A civilian driver was injured on Friday when an improvised explosive device went off targeting his truck on the Kirkuk-Baghdad-road, a police source said.
"A truck driver, working for al-Baraka company, was wounded when a roadside bomb was detonated targeting his truck near Touz Khormato, southwest of Kirkuk," the source, who asked not to be named, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq (VOI).
"The explosion caused material damage to the truck," he highlighted.
Kirkuk is 250 km northeast of Baghdad.

Gunmen kill three family members in Diala

Ba'aqouba, Feb 22, (VOI)-

Three persons from the same family were killed on Friday by unknown gunmen south of Ba'aqouba, a police source said.

"armed group attacked a house in Bani Saad district, south of Ba'aqouba, killing three family members," the source, who asked anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq (VOI).

He did not add more details.
Ba'aqouba, the capital of Diala, is 57 km northeast of Baghdad.
