IED kills U.S. soldier, wounds 4

Baghdad, Jan 14, (VOI) – 

A U.S. soldier was killed and four others wounded when an improvised explosive device went off near their vehicle during combat operations in Ninewa province, the U.S. military said.

"One Multi-National Division – North Soldier died from injuries sustained when an IED exploded near his vehicle while conducting operations in Ninewa province Jan. 12," the U.S. army said in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

"Four MND-N Soldiers were injured and evacuated to a Coalition hospital," the statement added.

The deaths bring the number of the U.S. troops killed in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion to 3,923 according to statistics released by the U.S. army. Of this number, 19 have been killed so far in January 2008.

Last December saw the smallest monthly loss of life for the U.S. army in Iraq as 20 U.S. soldiers were killed.

November 2004, which witnessed fierce battles between U.S. forces and Iraqi fighters in Falluja city, Anbar province, remains the month with the highest U.S. death toll: 137.

April 2004 comes second with 135, followed by May 2007 during which 126 U.S. soldiers were killed.

Four unknown corpses found in Baghdad

Baghdad, Jan 14, (VOI) - 

Iraqi police patrols found on Monday four unidentified bodies dumped in different parts of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, an interior ministry source said. "Police patrols found four unknown corpses dumped in various parts of the Baghdad," the source, who asked not to be named, told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI). "Two bodies were found in al-Ubeidi and al-Husieniya region in Rasafa, eastern Baghdad," the source added. "The two remaining bodies were found in western side of al-Karkh: one in each al-Aamel and al-Doura," he noted. "The bodies bore evidence of gunshot wounds, mainly to the head," he said.

4 unidentified bodies found in Haditha

Anbar, Jan 14, (VOI) – 

Four unidentified bodies were found south of the town of Haditha in the western Iraq province of al-Anbar on Monday, police said.

"The bodies were lying on the road near the district of Birwana, (3 km) southern Haditah," an officer in the town police told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI) on condition of anonymity.

"No identification cards were found with the bodies that were clad in civilian cloths," the source said, adding the bodies, which showed signs of having been shot, were removed to the Haditha Public Hospital.

Finding unidentified bodies in Haditha, 170 km west of Ramadi, is unfamiliar.
Ramadi, the capital of the predominantly Sunni province of al-Anbar, lies 110 km west of Baghdad.

Senior Sadrist leader killed in Basra

Basra, Jan 14, (VOI) - 

A senior leader from the Sadrist bloc was killed by unknown gunmen west of Basra, while a kidnapped policeman was freed 

and his kidnappers detained in central Basra, a police source said on Monday. "Unknown gunmen opened fire at Fayad al-Mousawi, head of the public relations in al-Sadr's office in Basra, on Sunday night in al-Zubaier city, west of Basra, killing him instantly," the source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI). 

He did not provide further details. "Police forces in central Basra released a policeman, who was kidnapped on Monday morning near Civil Defense Center in al-Tahseniya region in central Basra," the source added. "His kidnappers were also captured," he also said. Basra is 590 km south of Baghdad.

253 gunmen killed, arrested north of Baghdad - U.S. army

The U.S. army on Monday said that a total of 60 gunmen were killed and 193 suspected gunmen arrested within the first week of operation Iron Harvest.

"Within the first week of the operation, Coalition Forces and Iraqi Security Forces have detained 193 suspected (Iraqi fighters), killed 60 (of them) and found 79 weapons caches.

Scores of gunmen killed, 63 arrested in Operation Raider Harvest's 2nd phase

Diala, Jan 14, (VOI) – 

A joint Iraqi-U.S. force killed scores of (Iraqi fighters) and arrested 63 others during the early hours of Monday as the 2nd phase of Operation Raider Harvest started last week in several areas in Diala, the province's police chief said.

"A Diala police force, backed by Multi-National Force (MNF) troops, started on Monday dawn the second phase of Operation Raider Harvest, killing scores of (Iraqi fighters) in the district of Buhrez, (5 km) south of Ba'aquba, and al-Muradiya, in the heart of the city," Maj. General Ghanim al-Qurayshi told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI). Qurayshi did not give further details.

7 suspected 'Islamic State of Iraq' gunmen killed in Diala

Diala, Jan 14, (VOI) – 

Seven gunmen believed to belong to the 'Islamic State of Iraq' were killed on Monday during the 2nd phase of a wide-scale security operation launched by joint security forces in different parts of the province, Iraqi police said.

"Seven gunmen believed to belong to the 'Islamic State of Iraq' were killed on Monday during armed clashes with MNF and Iraqi police personnel in Abrar Bahraz area, 5 km south of Ba'aquba, as part of the 2nd phase of Operation Raider Harvest, which started last week in several areas in the province," a police source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq- Voices of Iraq- (VOI).

Earlier today, Diala Police Chief Maj. Gen. Ghanim al-Qurayshi told VOI that a joint Iraqi-U.S. force killed scores of (Iraqi fighters) and arrested 63 others during the early hours of Monday morning.

2 gunmen killed while planting IED in eastern Mosul – army

Ninewa, Jan 14, (VOI) – 

Iraqi army forces killed two gunmen while planting an improvised explosive device (IED) in eastern Mosul on Sunday night, an official army source said on Monday.

"A patrol of the 2nd Division's 4th Brigade, stationed in Mosul, killed two gunmen in al-Tahrir neighborhood, eastern Mosul, while planting in IED there," Col. Ahmed al-Zibari, the 2nd Division media director, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

He said the patrol was on its way to conduct a nocturnal combat mission when its soldiers spotted the gunmen while trying to plant an IED on the roadside. The soldiers opened fire at the two men, killing them instantly.

Zibari did not reveal the identity of the gunmen or whether there were clashes between them and the army patrol force.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

6 civilians, policemen wounded in car bomb attack near IIP building in Mosul

Ninewa, Jan 14, (VOI) – 

A car bomb went off near the Sunni Iraqi Islamic Party (IIP) headquarters in southern Mosul on Monday, wounding six people, including three policemen, an official security source said.

"The wounded policemen were in a patrol near the attack scene, in the area of al-Ghazlani, southern Mosul," Brig. Abdul-Karim al-Jubouri, the director of the Ninewa police operations room, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

Jubouri did not give further details but said the wounded people were rushed to the Mosul Public Hospital.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Gunmen kill 2 Iraqi army soldiers in southern Baghdad

Baghdad, Jan 14, (VOI) – 

Unidentified gunmen killed two Iraqi army soldiers while exiting their duty posts in the district of al-Za'afaraniya, southern Baghdad, on Monday, an Iraqi police source said.

"Gunmen inside a civilian vehicle opened fire at two Iraqi army soldiers during the early hours of Monday, killing them instantly and escaping to an unknown place," the source, who refused to have his name mentioned, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

"The two soldiers, clad in civvies, were inhabitants of al-Za'afaraniya area," the source said, not giving further details about the incident.

Unidentified gunmen kill judge in western Baghdad

Baghdad, Jan 14, (VOI) – 

Unidentified gunmen assassinated a judge at the federal court of appeal and his chauffeur in the western Baghdad area of al-Mansour on Monday morning, police said.

"Unidentified gunmen showered Judge Amer Jawdat al-Na'eb a short time after he stepped out of his house, killing him and his chauffeur and escaping to an unknown place," an Iraqi police source, who did not want his name mentioned, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

Na'eb was a judge in the Baghdad federal court of appeal and was formerly the chief judge of the al-Karkh court of appeal.
