52 Iraqis, US Soldier Killed in War Attacks, According to January 23, 2008 News Reports

 

Yaqen.net reported the following news for January 23, 2008:

6 bodies of Iraqis were found in Diala.

- 3 Iraqi soldiers were killed, two were injured in an attack near the Ministry of Financial Affairs, in Baghdad.

- Iraqi fighters hijacked seven fuel tankers carrying fuel to US forces in Salahuddin province.

- A US Apachi helicopter was downed north of Baghdad, west of Taji, as a result of Iraqi fighters' fire.

- US forces announced the death of a US soldier in Kirkuk.

Iraqi police patrols found on Wednesday four unidentified bodies dumped in different parts of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, an interior ministry source said.
"Police patrols found four unknown corpses dumped in various parts of Baghdad," the source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq -Voices of Iraq - (VOI).

The source added "three bodies were found in al-Shaab, al-Bunook and Husseiniya neighborhoods in Baghdad's eastern side of Rasafa, while the third body was found in al-Sidiya neighborhood, western Baghdad."

"The bodies found bore signs of gunshot wounds to different parts of the body, mainly to the head," he noted.

Suicide car bomb leaves 16 casualties in Kirkuk

Kirkuk, Jan 23, (VOI) -

Five civilians were killed and 11 others wounded in Kirkuk on Wednesday when a suicide car bomb targeting police senior officer detonated in al-Dibis district, the city suburb police said.

“A suicide car bomb targeting Brig. Joudat al-Naib, the director deputy of the Police Academy in Dibis district, 35 km north Kirkuk, went off, killing five civilians and wounding 11 others,” Sarhad Qadir, chief of Kirkuk’s suburb police, told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).

Iraqi army kill 7 gunmen in Mosul

Ninewa, Jan 23, (VOI) -

Iraqi army killed seven gunmen (Iraqi fighters resisting US forces and US-led Iraqi forces) on Wednesday in armed clashes that broke out in eastern Mosul, a military source said.

“The clashes that broke out between army forces and unknown gunmen in al-Risala district, east Mosul, on Wednesday, left seven gunmen killed,” Brig, Hajji Mahir, the commander of army 4th division second brigade, told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).

He added “the army forces destroyed two of gunmen’s vehicles and seized amounts of weapons and ammunitions.”

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa province, lies 402 km north of Baghdad.

Casualties from Mosul blast rises to 77

Ninewa, Jan 23, (VOI) -

Ninewa police on Wednesday said the casualty toll from the Mosul blast that ripped through the city has risen to seven individuals killed and 70 others wounded. 

“The toll from the Mosul blast, caused by a large amount of explosives planted in a building on Pepsi Street located in Zanjabeeli district, left 7 civilian individuals killed and 70 others wounded,” Brig. Abel Karim al-Juburi, chief of the Ninewa police command room told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).

Earlier, al-Juburi said a huge explosion ripped through Mosul city on Wednesday, leaving 50 casualties in an early estimate.

Police find body of dental college dean

Baghdad, Jan 24, (VOI) -

Police patrols found the body of the dean of Baghdad University's Dental College in western Baghdad on Wednesday, a security source said.

Police patrols found the body of Munthar Muhrej Radhi, who headed the country's premier Dental College, in Shalchiya district, western Baghdad,” the police source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq -Voices of Iraq - (VOI).

He added “the body, riddled with multiple gunshots, was found in the front of his car’s driving stern in Shalchiya, near Buratha mosque in Baghdad.”

Gunmen have regularly targeted Iraq's academic community, killing scores of professors in recent years and prompting many more to flee the country.

U.S. army says killed 15 gunmen in Diala

Baghdad, Jan 23, (VOI) –

Coalition forces killed 15 gunmen  (Iraqi fighters resisting US forces and US-led Iraqi forces) during operations in Diala province, the U.S. army said on Wednesday.

"As Coalition forces arrived in the target area, they observed several individuals reach for their weapons. Coalition forces fired warning shots in an attempt to get the men to cease their actions, but they did not comply.  Perceiving hostile intent from the armed men, Coalition forces engaged, killing two, to include the wanted individual," the statement noted.

Gunmen kill, injure 5 army soldiers in Baghdad

Baghdad, Jan 23, (VOI)-

Three Iraqi army soldiers were killed and two more were injured on Wednesday by unknown gunmen (Iraqi fighters resisting US forces and US-led Iraqi forces) in central Baghdad, a police source said.

"Unidentified armed men opened fire at an Iraqi army patrol in al-Wazareiya region in central Baghdad, killing three and injuring two," the source told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).

"The attack took place near the finance ministry on Mohammad al-Qassem highway," he explained. He did not provide further details.
