2 US Soldiers, 15 Iraqis Killed in War Attacks, Including 8 Executed by Death Squads, According to January 27 News Reports

Yaqen.net news agency reported the following on January 27, 2008:
- The US Tharthar military base was attacked with seven mortar rounds today.
- The US military base at Al-Saqlawiyah, north of Falloujah was also attacked with mortars today.
- One Iraqi soldier was killed, two were injured in an attack in Diala, south of Ba'aqoubah.

    Baghdad, Jan 27, (VOI)-

Iraqi police patrols found on Sunday four unidentified bodies dumped in different parts of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, an interior ministry source said. "Police patrols found four unknown corpses dumped in various parts of Baghdad," the source, who asked not to be named, told Aswat al-Iraq-Voices of Iraq- (VOI).

The source added "two bodies were found in al-Qahira and Sadr city neighborhoods in Baghdad's eastern side of Rusafa, while the other two bodies were found in al-Bayaa and al-Amil neighborhoods, western Baghdad." "The bodies found bore signs of gunshot wounds to different parts of the body, mainly to the head," he noted. AM

    Diala, Jan 27, (VOI) –

Joint forces found four bodies in one of al-Muqdadiya district villages, north of Baghdad, on Sunday, a Diala security source said. "Joint forces on Sunday found four corpses in Shirwin village of al-Muqdadiya district, 45 km north-east Baaquba, during a search-and-raid operation," the source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

"The bodies showed signs of having been shot, mostly in the head," the source added. Baaquba, the capital of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast Baghdad. AM/AE

2 U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq   Baghdad

Baghdad, Jan 27, (VOI) –

Two U.S. soldiers were killed on Sunday when two improvised explosive devices went off near their vehicle, the U.S. army said.

"A Multi-National Division –

Baghdad Soldier was killed Jan. 27 when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive devise in north-eastern Baghdad," according to a U.S. army statement received by Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

Earlier, the U.S. military said a "Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldier was killed Jan. 26 while conducting a dismounted patrol near Kadhemiyah when an improvised explosive device detonated." The death brings the number of the U.S. troops killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003 to 3,934, according to statistics released by the U.S. army. Of this number, 30 have been killed so far in January 2008. Last July saw the smallest monthly loss of life for the U.S. army in Iraq this year as 80 U.S. soldiers were killed.

U.S. Hummer destroyed in central Baghdad blast

Baghdad, Jan 27, (VOI) –

A U.S. Hummer-modeled vehicle was completely destroyed in a car bomb attack in central Baghdad, Iraqi police said on Sunday.

"On Sunday noon, a car bomb detonated near a U.S. patrol in front of the finance ministry building in downtown Baghdad's Bab al-Muazzam area," the source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq, Voices of Iraq, (VOI).

"A U.S. Hummer was completely burnt in the explosion," the source said. The source did not indicate whether any casualties were reported on the U.S. side, but said that U.S. forces sealed off the scene immediately after the blast. No comment was available from the U.S. army on the incident. SS

Body of tribal chief found in Basra

    Basra, Jan 27, (VOI) –

Policemen found the body of a tribal chief on Sunday afternoon hours after he was reportedly kidnapped by unidentified gunmen in central Basra, eyewitnesses said. "Policemen in Basra found the corpse of Sheikh Sami Hussein, one of the tribal chiefs of the al-Bahadel clan in Basra on Sunday morning, in the area of Kut al-Hajja, central Basra, hours after he was kidnapped," Abdul-Amir Jassem, Hussein's cousin, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

"Unidentified gunmen had kidnapped the sheikh on Saturday noon in al-Ashar area, central Basra, and led him to an unknown place. The body showed signs of having been shot in the head three times," Jassem said. An eyewitness told VOI that Hussein was a former member in the dissolved Baath Party. The police could not be immediately reached for details. The southern Iraq port city of Basra lies 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. AE  

Gunmen slay 4-member family in Baghdad

Baghdad, Jan 27, (VOI) –

Unknown gunmen killed a four-member family in an eastern Baghdad neighborhood, an Iraqi police source said on Sunday.

"On Saturday night, unidentified gunmen raided a house in Baghdad's eastern area of al-Talibiyya and killed a family, including the father, mother, son and daughter," the source, who preferred to remain unnamed, told Aswat al-Iraq, Voices of Iraq, (VOI).

"The motivations behind the murder remain unknown," the source explained. The father worked as a general director in Baghdad mayorship under the former Iraqi regime, the source noted. The source did not provide further details, but indicated that investigations are currently underway. SS
