32 Iraqis Killed, Including 22 Executed by Death Squads and US-Backed Tribal Chief, According to January 29, 2008 News Reports

Yaqen.net news agency reported the following news today:

- 2 crew members of Al-Furat Iraqi TV were killed, one was injured when a roadside bomb exploded under their vehicle in Balad.

- A US military vehicle was damaged by a roadside bomb on Haditha road, west of Ramadi.

The Iraq news agency (INA) reported that 9 corpses and 10 decapitated heads were found in Miqdadiya, in an area where US-Iraqi forces operate.

 Fortified Green Zone mortared

    Baghdad, Jan 29, (VOI) -

The fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad came under mortar shells attack on Tuesday afternoon with no reports of casualties, an Interior Ministry's source said. "Three mortar rounds fell into the Green Zone on Tuesday afternoon, with no reports of casualties," the source told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).

The Green Zone in central Baghdad is the seat of the Iraqi government offices and the compound of the U.S. and British embassies. The U.S. army has not yet commented on the incident. SH/SR

Three unknown corpses found in Baghdad

    Baghdad, Jan 29, (VOI) -

Iraqi police patrols found on Tuesday three unidentified bodies dumped in different parts of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, an interior ministry source said. "Police patrols found three unknown corpses dumped in various parts of Baghdad," the source, who asked to remain unnamed, told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).

The source added "two bodies were found in al-Shaab and al-Maamil neighborhoods in Baghdad's eastern side of Rusafa, while the third body was found in al-Doura neighborhood, western Baghdad." "The bodies bore signs of gunshot wounds to different parts of the body, mainly to the head," he noted. AM/SR  

Head of Awakening Council killed north of Baghdad   Baghdad - Voices of Iraq

A tribal chief said on Tuesday that Head of Saba'a al-Bour (US-backed) Awakening Council Abbas al-Dulaimi was killed on Monday when his car exploded north of Baghdad. 

"(US-recruited) Awakening Council fighters captured some of al-Dulaimi's bodyguards and admitted to planting explosive charges in his private car prior to the explosion," the chief told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI) under condition of anonymity. "He was alone when the car went off," he added. A police source confirmed the killing of al-Dulaimi on Monday. "His bodyguards were arrested after the incident," the source told VOI. SH/SR

3 gunmen killed, 19 bodies found in Muqdadiya

Muqdadiya, Jan 29, (VOI) -

Iraqi security forces killed three gunmen on Tuesday and found 19 unknown bodies in the city of Muqdadiya, a police source said.

"During Operation Raider Harvest, we managed today to kill three gunmen in al-Wagihiya district in Muqdadiya," the source, who asked to remain anonymous, told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).

"19 unknown corpses were also found in various regions in the city," he noted. He did not specify the locations where the bodies were found. Diala has been the stage for Raider Harvest, an operation launched a couple of weeks ago by joint Iraqi-U.S. forces to hunt down members of armed groups in Diala province. Muqdadiya is 45 km northeast of Baaquba, the capital of Diala, which lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad. SH/SR

U.S. base in Fallouja comes under missile fire   Anbar - Voices of Iraq

    Anbar, Jan 29, (VOI) –

A U.S. army base in Falluja was hit by four missiles on Tuesday, Anbar police said, while the “Islamic army” claimed in statement that the attack was a show of support for the blockaded Palestinian city of Gaza. “Four missiles landed in the U.S. army base, located 3 km east of Falluja, on Tuesday,” a Falluja police officer, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).

He added, “The missile, launched from the southern and eastern sides of the base, landed in the middle of the base where billows of smoke were seen spiraling upward.” The U.S. side was not available to comment on the incident. A short time later, four U.S. helicopters were seen hovering over Falluja for 25 minutes.

The Islamic army claimed responsibility for the attack in flyers circulated across the city. The Islamic army is one of the large armed groups that has joined the campaign launched by the U.S. troops and (US-backed) Tribal awakening (Sahwa) forces to fight al-Qaeda network and crush its operatives in Anbar province and many Iraqi cities.  

”The attack came as part of a campaign to support our people in Gaza,” the armed group’s statement said Falluja, one the biggest cities in Anbar province, lies 45 km west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. AM/SR

5 civilians wounded by IED, mortar shelling in Baghdad

    Baghdad, Jan 29, (VOI) –

Five civilians were wounded as a result of an improvised explosive device blast and firing of a mortar shell in two separate areas in eastern and western Baghdad on Tuesday, police said. "The IED, planted by unidentified gunmen on the main road in al-Dakhiliya neighborhood in the western Baghdad district of al-Yarmuk, went off on Tuesday, wounding three civilians," a security source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

"A mortar shell fell on a residential section in al-Fadiliya neighborhood, eastern Baghdad, wounding two people," the source added. Meanwhile, eyewitnesses told VOI that an explosion occurred on the main road of al-Qanah Street in Zayouna neighborhood, eastern Baghdad, but nothing was known about the blast or its results. One eyewitness told VOI plumes of smoke were seen rising from the scene of the explosion, prompting security forces to seal off the area.

The Iraqi police earlier said on Tuesday that 18 people, including nine army soldiers and policemen, were wounded in two IED attacks in two separate areas of Baghdad. The first one went off in al-Bab al-Sharqi area, central Baghdad, near an army patrol, wounding 10 persons, including four patrol men, while the second exploded near the Technological University in central Baghdad's al-Karrada targeting a police patrol, wounding eight, including five patrol men. 3 schoolgirls killed, 2 wounded in blast in Dalouiya

    Salah al-Din, Jan 29, (VOI) –

Three elementary schoolgirls were killed and two others wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off on Tuesday on a road that leads to their school in al-Dalouiya district, a police source in Salah al-Din province said.

"A home-made explosive charge went off on a road that leads to al-Inshrah primary school in al-Huweija al-Bahariya village, (5 km) west of Dalouiya, killing three girls and wounding two others while on their way to their school," the source, who preferred not to have his name mentioned, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

Dalouiya, Salah al-Din, lies 90 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. Meanwhile, a source in Tikrit University, who asked to remain unnamed, told VOI that security personnel at the Faculty of Law found an IED planted near the dean's office on Tuesday morning. "The police were called and the IED was defused," the source said.

The Faculty of Law, Tikrit University, was the scene of a suicide attack last year that targeted Salah al-Din Governor Hamad al-Qaysi, who was attending final exams. The attack left four people killed. Tikrit, the capital of Salah al-Din, is 175 km north of Baghdad. AE/SR

Mosul suicide blast casualties up to 15

Ninewa, Jan 29, (VOI) –

Tuesday's earlier suicide car bomb attack that targeted a U.S. patrol in eastern Mosul rose to 15 wounded, all of them civilians, an official source said. 

"A suicide car bomber targeted a U.S. patrol in al-Baath area, eastern Mosul, wounding 15 people, some of them seriously. Remains of the bomber's body were found at the scene," Col. Khaled Abdul-Sattar, the official spokesman for the Ninewa operations department, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

Abdul-Sattar had said the blast wounded 10 civilians. He did not say whether the attack left U.S. casualties. The U.S. side did not have immediate information about the incident. Mosul, the capital of Ninewa province, lies 402 km north of Baghdad. AE

Two explosions leave 18 wounded in Baghdad

Baghdad, Jan 29, (VOI)-

At least 18 people, including Iraqi troops, were wounded on Tuesday morning when two roadside bombs exploded in two separate incidents in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, a police source said. 

"A roadside bomb went off near an Iraqi army vehicle patrol in al-Bab al-Sharqi, central Baghdad, this morning, wounding ten people, including four troops," the source, who asked not to be named, told Aswat al-Iraq –Voices of Iraq- (VOI). Meanwhile, the same source added "another roadside bomb detonated near a police vehicle patrol near the Technological University campus in central Baghdad, wounding eight people, five of them were policemen."
