Palestinian woman gives birth at checkpoint

Date: 28 / 07 / 2008  Time:  14:29
Hebron – Ma'an –

Medics and eyewitnesses said on Monday that a Palestinian woman gave birth at a closed Israeli occupation military checkpoint near the southern West Bank town of Beit Kahil north of Hebron.

Twenty one-year-old Majidah Ja'afirah said she felt labor contractions and drove her husband's car towards hospital, "when I arrived at the roadblock before the checkpoint," she said, "I could not hold on any longer, and I gave birth inside the car at the checkpoint."

For his part, the husband, Muhammad Ja'afira said, "My wife gave birth inside the car waiting at the closed checkpoint for an ambulance. When the ambulance arrived, it just transferred my wife to the governmental hospital in Hebron after she already gave birth. I named my newly-born son "Radi", which means satisfied, because I am so satisfied that my wife and my son survived the dangers of labor under such circumstances."

Director of Hebron governmental hospital, Sa'id Sarahnah confirmed that both the mother and baby are in good health.
