Egyptian-Arab Intellectual Abdul Wahab Al-Mesairi Dies at Age 70

Egyptian intellectual Dr. Masiri dies at the age of 70

CAIRO, GAZA, (PIC)--

Renowned Egyptian intellectual Dr. Abdul Wahab Al-Mesairi died on Thursday morning at the Palestine Hospital in Cairo aged 70 after suffering from cancer for a number of years.

Dr. Al-Mesairi will be buried Thursday afternoon in his hometown of Damanhour, in the northern district of Buhaira, where his funeral will start from the Rabea al-Adawiyah mosque in Nasr city east of Cairo.

Dr. Al-Mesairi was born in 1938 in Damanhour were he completed his secondary education, then in 1955 he joined the Alexandria University and graduated in English Literature. On his graduation he was a pointed a tutor at the same university.

In 1963 he travelled to the USA were he completed his Masters degree in 1964 at Columbia University. He then went on to gain his PhD in 1969 at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

He went back to Egypt where he lectured at the Ain Shams university as well as the King Saud university and the Islamic University of Malaysia. He was also a visiting professor at the Nasser Military Academy. He was also a member of the council of experts at the Ahram Centre for Political and Strategic Studies and a cultural consultant for the Arab League permanent mission at the United Nations.

In January 2007 Dr. Al-Mesairi became the coordinator for the Egyptian Movement for Change (Kefaya).

The most important work of Dr. Al-Mesairi was and Encyclopaedia about Zionism and Judaism in eight volumes which was the result of 25 years of research. He has also left a legacy of books that he wrote ranging from social studies to poetry to children's books.

The Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, mourned the great intellectual Dr. Abdul-Wahhab Al-Mesairi who died on Thursday morning aged 70. Hamas said in a statement on Thursday that Dr. Al-Mesairi "spent his life defending the critical issues of the Ummah and calling for reform and change of the sad state [of the Ummah]." The movement further said in its eulogy that Dr. Al-Mesairi gave special attention to the Palestine cause and was know for his support to resistance and opposition to surrender under various schemes.
