UN official John Holmes: Israeli siege failed to make Palestinians in Gaza revolt against Hamas

[ 13/03/2008 - 02:47 PM ]

GAZA, (PIC)--

John Holmes, the UN coordinator of humanitarian affairs, stated that the Israeli idea that the siege on Gaza would lead its inhabitants to topple the Hamas Movement proved to be unsubstantiated.

In an interview with the Reuters news agency, Holmes reiterated UN's description of the Israeli siege as a mass punishment that does not help in establishing a foundation for peace other than damaging Gaza economy.

"What is needed is peace founded on political dialogue, confidence and hope instead of despair, hatred and humiliation," the UN coordinator added.

He also lashed out at the illegal Israeli settlement activities at the expense of the Palestinian lands in the West Bank and its persistence in building its apartheid, separation wall.

In another context, Dr. Aziz Duwaik, the PLC speaker imprisoned in Israeli jails called, on behalf of all imprisoned MPs, on the Arab League, the organization of the Islamic conference and the international parliamentary union to assume their responsibilities towards the different issues of the Islamic nation.

In a letter received by the PIC, Dr. Duwaik also called on the Islamic Summit held in Dakar to take serious stands to protect the Aqsa Mosque and occupied Jerusalem from the Zionist Judaization schemes which are carried out in public without any official Arab or Islamic reactions.
