144 Iraqis Killed in War Attacks, Including 4 Executed by Death Squads, 134 in Southern Iraq Fighting, According to March 27, 2008 News Reports

Yaqen.net reported the following news today:

- A British was killed in the Basra area.

- 19 Iraqis were killed, 307 were injured in Baghdad as a result of the three-fighting between Mahdi Army fighters and US-backed Iraqi forces.

3 Kurdish Beshmerga fighters were killed in an attack by gunmen in Kirkuk.

The Iraq News Agency (INA) reported the following news:

- 4 policemen, 40 Mahdi Army militiamen were killed in Wassit fighting.

- 4 demonstrators were killed by the police during an anti-Maliki protest in Basra.

- 42 were killed in kut clashes.

U.S. airstrike kills 60 gunmen in Hilla

More than 60 gunmen were killed on Wednesday evening as U.S. choppers fired rockets against buildings used by gunmen in central Hilla, 100 km south of Baghdad, Iraqi security source said.

"U.S. copters bombed sites used by gunmen in Hilla's neighborhoods of al-Askari, Ahmed Nader and Muhaizem, killing more than 60 militants and destroying some houses," the source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq- Voices of Iraq- (VOI).

From his part, Abdellatif Rayan, an MNF-Iraq media adviser who could not give an exact number of the gunmen killed during the airstrike told VOI that the operation was carried out as Iraqi forces requested an air support while clashing with gunmen in central Hilla.

Hilla, capital city of Babel, has been a scene of clashes that erupted between security forces and Al-Mahdi Army militia fighters of the cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Mortar shelling leaves 21 casualties in Baghdad

Two civilians were killed and 19 others wounded when four mortar rounds fell into two of Baghdad's residential districts, an Interior ministry source said.
"Three mortar rounds fell in al-Alawi, main transport station in western Baghdad, leaving two civlians killed and 17 others wounded", an Interior ministry source, who preferred to be on condition of anonmity, told Aswat al-Iraq-Voices of Iraq(VOI).

He added " a mortar round landed into al-Batween district in central Baghdad, leaving two civilians wounded and causing material damagae to one of the houses".
Baghdad along with southern has seen clashes and intense fighting between Iraqi security forces and the militants of Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr following the announcement of a major security plan to crack down on gunmen in Basra

Casualties from Wassit armed clashes up to 115

The death toll from the armed clashes that flared up last Monday between security forces and Mahdi Army gunmen in Wassit rose to 40 dead and 75 wounded, the chief of local police said on Thursday.

“The death toll from the clashes in the province rose to 40 dead and 75 wounded, all of them civilians, including women and children,” General Abdul Hanin Hamoud Saleh al-Amara said at a press conference in Wassit.
“Police and army forces, backed by U.S. troops, controlled the province,” he added.
Basra and a number of southern provinces have been a hotbed of fierce armed confrontations since Monday between security forces and armed groups, during which scores of civilians were killed and wounded.

Kut, capital of Wassit, lies 180 km southeast of Baghdad.

4 unknown bodies found in Diala

Four unknown bodies were found on Thursday in Baladruz, southeast of Diala, a security source said.
“Police patrols found four unidentified bodies on the main road in Baladruz district,” the source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).
He did not provide further details.

Ba'aqouba, the capital of Diala, is 57 km northeast of Bagdad.

3 cops killed, 4 injured as bomb explodes in Babel

Three policemen were killed and four others were wounded on Thursday when an explosive charge went off south of Hilla, a police source said.
“An improvised explosive device went off targeting a police vehicle patrol in al-Kafl region, south of Hilla, killing three policemen and injuring four,” the source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq (VOI).

“U.S. helicopters shelled some gunmen hideout inside al-Askari, Ahmad Nader and Mehezam neighborhoods in central Hilla, killing 60 gunmen and destroying a number of houses,” a security source said on Wednesday.
Hilla, the capital of Babel, is 100 km south of Baghdad.

Gunmen kill, wound 10 cops in Karbala

Karbala, Mar 27, (VOI)-

Two policemen, including an officer, were killed and eight others were injured in clashes between security forces and gunmen that lasted until late Wednesday in central Karbala, a police source said.
“The clashes continued until late Wednesday in al-Askari, al-Hurr, and al-Ghadier neighborhoods in central Karbala,” the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq (VOI).

“Two cops, including an office, were killed and eight more were wounded in the clashes,” he added.
An eyewitness from al-Ghadier region, 3 km south of Karbala, told the VOI that unknown armed men attacked a checkpoint on Wednesday night and set two police vehicles ablaze.
Another witness from al-Askari neighborhood said clashes broke out at 8 pm on Wednesday between policemen and gunmen.

“A mortar round landed on a police station,” he noted.
Karbala is 130 km south of Baghdad.

U.S. soldier, 2 civilians injured in Baghdad

Baghdad, Mar 27, (VOI)-

The U.S. army said on Thursday that one of its soldiers, two American civilians and an Iraqi soldier were injured when 16 rockets hit the fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad.

“Terrorists fired 16 rockets into the International Zone from surrounding Baghdad districts in four separate attacks during the morning and early afternoon of March 26,” the U.S. army said in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq (VOI).

“At approximately 5:30 a.m., five 107 mm rockets impacted the IZ, four more 107 mm rockets struck at approximately 9:15 a.m., three 107 mm rockets in the third attack, and four 107 mm rockets at approximately 2:50 pm,” the statement added.

“One Coalition force Soldier, two U.S. civilians, and one Iraqi Army soldier were wounded in the attack. Several structures and one vehicle were also damaged,” it said.
The Green Zone in central Baghdad is the seat of the Iraqi government offices and the compound of the U.S. and British embassies.

Car bomb kills, injures 7 Kurdish soldiers in Kirkuk

A Kurdish captain was killed and six Kurdish security soldiers were injured on Thursday when a booby-trapped car went off near their vehicle patrol in southern Kirkuk, a police source said.

“A car crammed with explosives was detonated remotely targeting a vehicle patrol of the Kurdish security forces in al-Quds street in Tesyeen region in southern Kirkuk, killing a captain and wounding six,” the source, who wished to remain anonymous, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq (VOI).
He did not provide further details.
Kirkuk is 250 km northeast of Baghdad.
