Xinhua reported a source in the Iraqi government police as saying that the bomb went off near the top-security “Green Zone” area in Baghdad where the American occupation has its headquarters.  It was not immediately known whether as-Samarra’i was actually in the motorcade at the time of the attack, but three of his bodyguards were killed in the blast.

The source said that two cars in the motorcade were damaged in the attack, the second such assault on members of the Islamic Party Wednesday.

On Wednesday morning, a car bomb exploded near the main headquarters of the Sunni collaborationist party in the al-Yarmuk area, killing or wounding 17 people, many of them party members.

The source said that fighting also raged between the Jaysh al-Mahdi on the one side and US and Iraqi regime forces on the other in the ash-Shu‘lah area.  US aircraft blasted the area as well, killing two people and wounding six more.

Yaqen reported a communiqué issued by the group on Monday, 12 May as saying that its fighters blew up a Humvee, killing personnel inside near the az-Zawiyah Junction.  The communiqué described the attack as a form of support for fighters engaged in combating the offensive against al-Qa‘idah in al-Mawsil that was announced by the Iraqi Regime on Saturday, 10 May.

Iraqi Prime Minister decrees name-change for at-Ta’mim Province.

In a dispatch posted at 10:45pm Baghdad time Wednesday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that US-backed Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki issued decrees abolishing the official name of at-Ta’mim Province, and replacing it with the name of the region’s capital city, Kirkuk.

Yaqen reported that the move was in response to demands to Kurdish separatists in the province and was linked to reports of support by the Kurdish separatist Peshmergah militia for the regime’s offensive in the northwestern city of al-Mawsil.

The name of the province, originally Kirkuk Province, had been changed to at-Ta’mim (meaning “nationalization”) in 1976.  US-backed Kurdish separatists, who are seeking to annex the oil-rich city of Kirkuk (where the largest population bloc is Arab) to their northern Iraqi enclave, have unofficially referred to the province as Kirkuk since 2006.

Yaqen noted that according to the constitution imposed on Iraq following the US occupation, changes of provincial names are the responsibility of the Iraqi parliament, not the Prime Minister.
