By Francois de Beaupuy

Nov. 22, 2008 (Bloomberg) --

A French soldier assigned to the NATO-led ISAF occupation forces in Afghanistan was killed and another was injured when their patrol was hit by an explosive device near the capital Kabul, the government said.

French President condemned the attack and “reaffirmed his commitment to fight terrorism,” his office said in an e-mailed statement today. The injuries of the other soldier, who was treated at the French military hospital in Kabul, aren’t life-threatening, the defense ministry said.

Roadside bomb kills 2 civilians in Afghanistan

By AMIR SHAH • Associated Press • November 22, 2008

KABUL, Afghanistan--

A bomb exploded next to a vegetable market in eastern Afghanistan early today, killing two people, officials said.

At least 17 others were wounded — 16 civilians and a private security worker — said Taher Khan Sabari, deputy governor of Khost province.

Yaqoob Khan, the province's deputy police chief, said the bomb exploded on a road just outside the market and appeared to have targeted private security forces in a nearby vehicle.

The attack came a day after Afghan and coalition forces killed a civilian in the same province.

U.S. forces spokesman Col. Greg Julian said the troops fired warning shots toward a vehicle that was "driving erratically" and did not respond to their signals.

"We regret this tragic loss of life and express our condolences to the individual's family," Julian said in a statement.

Meanwhile, officials in eastern Kunar province said they found the body of a district administrative chief three and half months after he was kidnapped by Taliban insurgents. The kidnappers had demanded money and the release of 50 Taliban prisoners from government jails, said deputy police chief Abdul Sabor Allayer.

The demands were not met, and Allayer said the official was found fatally shot today.

Elsewhere Friday, Afghan and coalition troops killed four (alleged Taliban fighters) in western Farah province during a raid on a compound associated with a Taliban commander, U.S. forces said in a statement.

It said local residents confirmed that those who died in the ensuing clash were Taliban fighters.

Separately, U.S. forces said coalition troops detained three (alleged Taliban fighters) during a search of a compound connected to a local Taliban commander in Ghazni province on Friday.

It followed a clash Thursday near a main road in southern Helmand province in which Afghan and coalition troops were attacked while on patrol and returned fire, killing 10 (alleged Taliban fighters), U.S. forces said in a statement. Associated Press writer Heidi Vogt contributed to this report.

US-led troops kill 14 Afghanis, one civilian in Afghanistan

Sat Nov 22, 2:06 am ET AFP/File – US soldiers in Khost province on November 15, 2008. A bomb blast in an Afghan market Saturday killed …

KABUL (AFP) –

The US-led military said Saturday its forces had killed 14 (alleged Taliban fighters) in military operations in southern Afghanistan, also shooting and killing a civilian who came too close to a patrol.

The deadliest battle was in the southern province of Helmand where Afghan and coalition security forces killed 10 (alleged Taliban fighters) on Thursday after coming under attack during a patrol, it said in a statement.

Then early Friday, troops on an operation targeting a Taliban commander in the southwestern province of Farah came under attack in a village and returned fire, killing four (alleged Taliban fighters), another statement said.

There were nearly 90 civilians in the village, including dozens of women and children, but they were not harmed, it said, adding that various weapons were recovered.

Also on Friday troops in the eastern province of Khost opened fire on a civilian vehicle that had ignored warnings to stay away from the soldiers.

A man was wounded and later died, a statement said, expressing regret.
