19 killed, 52 wounded in Iraq violence until Thursday afternoon

October 2, 2008 - 11:34:06
BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Nineteen people were killed and 52 others wounded in acts of violence in different areas of Iraq during the period between Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon, according to security sources.

“A suicide bomber with an explosive vest blew himself up near the Shiite mosque of Al al-Rasoul in New Baghdad,” Maj. General Qassem Atta, the official spokesman for the Baghdad Operations Command (BOC), told Aswat al-Iraq.
He said that a security official threw himself at the bomber and detonated him 80 meters away from the mosque, adding six were killed and 26 others wounded.

“Another suicide bomber blew up his explosive vehicle near a military checkpoint several meters away from a mosque in al-Zaafaraniya on Thursday morning while civilians were performing the Eid prayers, killing seven people and wounding 23 others,” Atta said.

In Diala, in official security source in the province’s security operations room said that six civilians members of the same family were killed and three others wounded by the fire of gunmen who intercepted them in eastern Diala.
“An armed group intercepted a vehicle carrying a family of 10 people on the main road of Kassiba village, al-Muqdadiya district, (45 km) northeast of Baaquba,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq.

“The gunmen opened fire at the vehicle, killing six of the passengers and wounding three others,” the source added.
A couple of weeks ago, Kassiba was the stage of a military campaign conducted by forces from the National Police’s 6th Brigade. The crackdown resulted capturing the founder of al-Nawah (Nucleus) Party, which is trying to revive the dissolved Baath Party of the former regime. The village, according to security sources, is considered to be one of the most important strongholds of supporters of the former ruling party.
