UNRWA calls for $181 million, an urgent aid to Gaza

Tuesday August 18, 2009 02:18 by Saed Bannoura - IMEMC

The United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA) issued an urgent statement calling on donor countries to provide 181 million USD so it can continue its relief work in the Gaza Strip as more than 70% of the residents depend on humanitarian aid.

The UNRWA added that as the Muslims will be marking the Holy Month of Ramadan, the agency needs the donations to provide food and cash for needy families to rebuild their homes, and for creating job opportunities.

The UNRWA also said that the lack of construction materials is obstructing the reconstruction of Gaza, but the residents need to rebuild and fix their homes even with the limited available tools.

It also stated that with the month of Ramadan approaching, the residents are still living in miserable conditions while 70% of the residents are unemployed and depend on international aid.

The agency further said that the lack of water, power supply and a functioning sewage system are posing more threats, especially as thousands of residents are living in what is left of their shelled homes without basic services.

It added that rebuilding Gaza cannot be delayed but that it seems it is turning into a mirage, and stated that by winter season hundreds of refugees would not be able to tolerate the cold.
