Gaza power plant shuts down generator for lack of fuel due to Israeli siege

Gaza power plant shuts down generator due to lack of fuel

Thursday August 06, 2009 17:44 by Katherine Orwell - 1 of International Middle East Media Center Editorial Group

Gaza's only power plant was forced to shut down one of its three generators due to a lack of industrial fuel on Thursday. For the local population this means that 30% less power will be available during prime hours.

According to sources within the power Authority, the “stoppage came as a result of decreasing the amount of fuel allowed into Gaza” by the Israeli occupation government. The strip needs at least 3.2 million where it is currently only receiving 2.2 million liters per week. The shortage is caused by the continuing Israeli siege of the Gaza Strip, as only small amounts of industrial fuel are allowed into the territory every week.

Gaza power company: One of the electric units will stop due to fuel shortage

[ 06/08/2009 - 12:04 PM ]

GAZA, (PIC)--

The Gaza electricity company warned that one of its electric generating units would stop on Friday or Saturday if the Israeli occupation government did no allow in additional quantities of fuel needed to operate the station.

The company’s director Suhail Sukik said that the amount of electricity distributed to the networks in Gaza would shrink if this unit stopped and thus number of power outages would increase in light of the shortage of fuel.

Sukik pointed out that the power station needs about 3, 200 liters of fuel every week instead of 2,200 in order to keep the tree units operational.

He appealed to the concerned parties and the European union to pressure Israel to resolve the crisis of fuel needed to operate the station.
