Mosul mosque blast death toll up to 38, wounded to 90

August 7, 2009 - 04:53:10

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Casualties from Friday’s earlier car bomb blast near a Shi'i mosque in Mosul rose to 38 deaths and 90 wounded, a Ninewa police source said.

(Yesterday news reports mentioned that the death toll was 15 and injuries were 70).

“A suicide bomber detonated his explosive vehicle near worshippers who have just getting out of the Shi'i mosque of Shrifan in the northern Mosul area of al-Rashidiya, after the congregational Friday prayers, leaving such a large number of casualties,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Earlier, a security source had told Aswat al-Iraq that the blast left 30 deaths and 70 others wounded.

The source had said that the casualties were most likely to rise due to the powerfulness of the explosion that caused severe damage to the surrounding area, and many of the wounded being in a critical condition.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Mosul blast casualties rise to 305

2009-08-08 04:54:22

    BAGHDAD, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) --

Casualties in the car bombing in Iraqi northern city of Mosul rose to 305, source with provincial governorate said Friday.

According to the latest casualties numbers, the car bomb which detonated near a Shi'i mosque in the Al-Sherifan village, northwest of Mosul earlier on Friday, killed 38 people and wounded 267 others. The blast happened when worshippers left the Shiite Mosque after their Friday prayer.

The source previously put the numbers at 23 people killed and 30 others wounded. Mosul is the capital city of northern Iraq's Nineveh province.

Friday's attack targeting Shi'i Muslims seems to be no coincidence.

Earlier in the day, roadside explosions in Baghdad killed four and wounded 18 Shi'i pilgrims, who just finished their religious ritual from holy city of Karbala.

Tens of thousands of Shiite pilgrims across the country congregated to the holy city Karbala in recent days to celebrate the mid-Sha'aban visit, which falls on Friday. Sha'aban is the eighth month of the Islamic calendar and the month before the holy month of Ramadan.

Sporadic attacks continue in Baghdad and other Iraqi cities and towns after U.S. combat forces pullout, despite low level of violence comparing with the previous years.
