Police officer, woman wounded by thermal bomb in Mosul

A police officer and a woman were wounded in a thermal bomb explosion in central Mosul, a security source said on Tuesday.

“A thermal bomb exploded on Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 15) targeting a police vehicle patrol in al-Saaa region in central Mosul, seriously injuring a police lieutenant and passing woman,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The blast damaged the patrol’s vehicle,” he added.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Civilian killed in northern Mosul

A civilian was killed by unknown gunmen on Tuesday in northern Mosul, a police source said.

“Unknown gunmen opened fire on an owner of a generator in al-Shurta neighborhood, neighborhood, killing him instantly,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He did not give further details.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

3 civilians injured in southwest of Kirkuk

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq:

Three civilians were wounded on Tuesday in a thermal bomb attack in southwest of Kirkuk, according to a source from the joint coordination center in Kirkuk.

“Unknown gunmen threw a thermal bomb at a US patrol in central al-Huwayja district, southwest of Kirkuk,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The attack injured three passing civilians and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment,” he added.

He gave no more details.

Kirkuk is 250 km northeast of Baghdad.

Iraqi soldier killed in eastern Mosul

One Iraqi soldier was killed on Tuesday by gunmen in eastern Mosul, according to a security source. “Unknown gunmen opened fire on an Iraqi soldier in al-Nabi Younes market in eastern Mosul, killing him on the spot,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The gunmen fled to unknown place,” he added. Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Iranian envoy says embassy blast caused no casualties, damage

The Iranian ambassador to Baghdad, Hassan Kazemi Qomi, said that the blast that occurred earlier today near the embassy’s compound in downtown Baghdad did not cause any casualties or damage to it.

The Iranian Fars News Agency quoted Qomi as expressing his belief that the embassy “was not the target of the blasts.” Earlier today, three car bombs went off simultaneously near the Iranian embassy in Karadet Maryam area and the compounds of the Foreign Ministry and the Displacement and Migration Ministry, leaving four persons killed and 14 others wounded, according to an initial count.

Blast near Mosul church kills 4, wounds 40

Four persons on Tuesday were killed and 40 others were injured when two car bombs went off consecutively near a church in Mosul, the local police said.

“Today, two booby-trapped cars detonated near the Virgin Mary Church in al-Shifaa neighborhood, western Mosul, killing 4 people and wounding 40 others,” a police source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The blast caused slight damage to the church, the source added.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

BOC: Today’s blasts were caused by IEDs

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

The three blasts that occurred earlier today in the Iraqi capital were caused by explosive devices, an official spokesperson for the Baghdad Operations Command said on Tuesday.

“The three car bomb blasts that detonated this morning were triggered by sticky explosive devices,” Maj. Gen. Qassem Ata told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The first car was parked in the Foreign Ministry’s parking lot, the second in the Displacement and Migration Ministry’s parking lot and the third between the building of the Journalists’ Syndicate and the Iranian embassy, the official explained.

Earlier in the day, three car bombs went off simultaneously near the Iranian embassy in Karadet Maryam area and the compounds of the Foreign Ministry and the Displacement and Migration Ministry, killing four persons and wounding 14 others, according to an initial count. “A total of 19 vehicles have been burnt down in the blast,” Ata noted, adding that a fourth car bomb was found in Karadet Maryam area and defused by bomb squad personnel.

Municipal council chief survives attempt on life

The head of the municipal council in Sadr City has survived an assassination attempt when gunmen attacked him in eastern Baghdad, the Iraqi police said on Tuesday.

“On Tuesday, the head of Sadr City’s municipal council, Hassan Shamma, escaped an attempt on his life when gunmen driving a civilian vehicle opened fire on him while he was leaving his house in Sadr City, eastern Baghdad,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. Shamma was not hit in the attack, which left one of his companions wounded, the source noted.

3 car bombs kill 4, wound 14 in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Three booby-trapped cars have detonated in downtown Baghdad, killing four civilians and injuring 14 others, the Iraqi police said on Tuesday.

“The car bombs went off simultaneously near the Iranian embassy in Karadet Maryam area and the compounds of the Foreign Ministry and the Displacement and Migration Ministry,” a police source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

 Throughout the past three days, the Iraqi Parliament has hosted the ministers of defense, interior and national security, as well as the intelligence chief and Baghdad’s Operations Commander to respond to queries about the deadly blasts that rocked Baghdad last week and left at least 132 killed and over 500 others wounded, according to Interior Ministry figures.
