5 US Soldiers, 8 Iraqis Killed, Scores Injured in War Attacks, 24 US Soldiers Committed Suicide in January

Yaqen.net reported the following news:

- 2 security guards were killed, two more were injured in a bomb explosion north of Ba'aqouba.

- A US mine-sweeper was destroyed in an attack by Ansar Al-Sunna fighters in Al-Karkh, west of Baghdad.

- US Department of Defense announced that 24 US soldiers committed suicide on January 2007, which is seven times higher than in January 2008.

- A US soldier was killed by an Iraqi sniper in Al-Dour, Salahuddin Province.

- 2 Iraqi policemen were killed in a gunmen attack on their patrol in Al-Karama neighborhood, Mosul.

4 U.S. soldiers killed in suicide bombing

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Four U.S. servicemen were killed in a car bomb blast that occurred in Mosul city, according to the U.S. army.
“Three U.S. Coalition Soldiers were killed, and another Soldier later died of wounds when a suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle in Mosul, Iraq Feb. 9,” read a U.S. army statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“One interpreter was also injured in the attack and later died of wounds,” the statement noted.
“The names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin and release by the U.S. Department of Defense,” it added.

The deaths raise the number of U.S. fatalities in February 2009 to five, and bring the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003 to 4,242.

2 civilians wounded in armed attack

ARBIL / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two civilians on Tuesday were wounded in an armed attack by gunmen near Makhmour district, according to an army source.

“Today, two civilians were wounded in an armed attack by unknown gunmen driving a civilian vehicle near Dozanti village (27 km southwest of Makhmour),” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The wounded were rushed to an emergency hospital in Arbil,” the source explained, adding that one of them is said to be in an “unstable” condition.

The disputed district of Makhmour is administratively affiliated with Ninewa province.

IED explodes, another defused in Kirkuk

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq:

An improvised explosive device (IED) on Tuesday went off in southern Kirkuk city, causing no casualties, an assistant police chief said, adding that another device was defused in the same area.

“The charge detonated in Wahad Athar neighborhood, southern Kirkuk, causing damage but no casualties,” Lt. Col. Kamel Ahmed told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Meanwhile, another explosive charge found close to the first device was defused by police forces, the official said, noting that no damage was reported.

IED leaves 10 casualties in Diala

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two border guards were killed and eight others were wounded when an improvised explosive device went off in the south of Khaneqeen, the spokesman for the border guards said on Monday.

“An explosive charge was detonated targeting a vehicle patrol of the 8th battalion of the Iraqi army, killing two border guards and injuring eight,” Sarjal Abdul Karim told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The explosion occurred between Kani Massi and Ali al-Saghier villages in Naftkhana region in the south of Khaneqeen,” he added.

Khaneqeen is 155 km northeast of Ba'aqouba, the capital of Diala, which lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Soldier killed, officer, policeman wounded in Mosul

An Iraqi army soldier was killed on Monday and an officer and a policeman were wounded in two separate incidents in western and southeast of Mosul, a security source said.

“A soldier was killed and an officer was wounded in a car accident in al-Salamiya intersection in southeast of Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“A policeman was injured when unknown gunmen attacked his patrol near al-Jisr al-Khames in western Mosul,” he added.

He did not give more details.
Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

IED kills cop, injures 4 north of Diala

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A policeman was killed and four others were wounded on Tuesday in a bomb explosion in the north of Baaquba, a security source said.

“An improvised explosive device went off on Tuesday (Feb. 10) in front of al-Azeem region police station in Khalis, north of Ba'aquba,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The explosion killed a policeman and injured four others,” he added.

Ba'aquba, the capital of Diala, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Civilian body found in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: Police forces on Tuesday found a civilian body in eastern Mosul, said a police source.

“The forces found the body in al-Faisaliya region in eastern Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The body bore signs of gunshot wounds to the head and the chest,” he added.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north if Baghdad.

U.S. forces raid police HQ in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

U.S. forces raided the headquarters of al-Baaj emergency contingent, western Mosul city, and abused a number of servicemen there, a security source from Ninewa police said on Tuesday.

“The raid operation took place late last night,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The headquarters is located at al-Baaj silo, 130 km western Mosul,” he said.

“The U.S. force beat and cursed servicemen there,” he added.

The source pointed out that the U.S. force was supported by helicopters.

No comment was immediately available from the U.S. side.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Bomb explodes without casualties in Mosul

An improvised explosive device went off on Tuesday in eastern Mosul, without leaving casualties, a police source said.

“An explosive charge was detonated targeting a motorcade of employees from the support committee in al-Nabi Younis region in eastern Mosul, causing material damage to one vehicle, but left no casualties,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The explosion occured while the employees were inspecting a number of projects in the region,” he added.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

3 cops wounded in Mosul blast

Three Iraqi policemen on Tuesday were injured in a car bomb blast that targeted their vehicle in southern Mosul city, according to a security source.

“Today, a roadside explosives-rigged car in Doura Baghdad area, southern Mosul, went off near a police patrol vehicle, wounding three patrolmen,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.
