2 US Soldiers, British Soldier, 52 Iraqis Killed, Scored Injured, in War Attacks, February 13-15, 2009

Sunday, Feb 15, 2009:

- A US soldier was killed, three were injured in a roadside bomb attack in Al-Shurqat, south of Mosul.

- An Iraqi policeman was injured in an attack in Al-Falloujah.

- A US soldier was killed on Saturday, in a non-combat incident (probably a reference to suicide death) in Baghdad. This death has increased the official death toll to 4,244 since the US invasion of Iraq in March 2003, which does not include the death toll of the private army of security contractors and the toll of US injured soldiers who are evacuated quickly outside Iraq.

- A US military vehicle was damaged in a roadside bomb in Jamila commercial area, east of Baghdad.

- One Iraqi security officer was killed, three others were injured in a roadside bomb attack in Beiji.

- A policeman was injured in an attack in Al-Mansour neighborhood, Mosul.

- One person was killed, six were injured in a car bomb attack in Al-Thawrah city, east of Baghdad.

- One intelligence officer was killed in a gunmen attack in Mosul.

Saturday, Feb 14, 2009:

- One Peshmerga Kurdish fighter was killed, three were injured in an attack in Menali.

- Two corpses were found in Al-Huwaish, Samarra.

- Four US soldiers were injured in an attack with a heat grenade in Al-Qadisiya neighborhood, Samarra.

- Two Iraqi soldiers were killed, four were injured in 17 July area, Mosul.

- Canadian government announced granting 3,900 Iraqi refugees asylum in Canada. These refugees applied for asylum in Canada from refugee camps in Syria. About 4.5 million Iraqis have become refugees around the world as a result of the 2003 US invasion.

- A US patrol was attacked with a grenade in Kirkuk.

3 wounded in hand-grenade attack in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Three civilians were wounded when a hand-grenade was hurled at a police patrol in central Mosul city on Sunday, a security source in Ninewa said.

“The grenade was thrown by a gunman at a police patrol on al-Corniche street, central Mosul, wounding three civilians who happened to be near the scene of the attack. The gunman then escaped to an unknown place,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

2 civilians wounded in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two civilians sustained different wounds as a result of an explosive charge planted by unidentified persons in eastern Baghdad on Sunday, an Iraqi interior ministry source said.

“The charge, planted on a main road in the area of Djamila, near the eastern Baghdad district of Sadr City, left two civilians wounded,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Earlier in the day (Feb. 15), a police source said a sticky improvised explosive device attached to a civilian vehicle went off in a souk in Sadr City, killing one man and injuring four others.

Civilian killed, 4 wounded in IED blast in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

One civilian man was killed and four others injured when a sticky improvised explosive device attached to a vehicle went off in the eastern Baghdad district of Sadr City on Sunday, according to an Iraqi police source.

“The blast occurred near al-Awla souk (market) in Sadr City, killing a civilian man and wounding four others,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Sadr City is the key stronghold of the Sadrists, or Iraqis loyal to Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr. The district has witnessed in late March 2008 bloody confrontations between security forces backed by Multi-National Force (MNF) troops on one hand and fighters from Sadr’s Mahdi Army militias.

The clashes later ended with an agreement between the United Iraqi Alliance (UIA) bloc, to which incumbent Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki belongs, and representatives from the Sadrist Movement.

Civilian killed, 3 wounded in blast in Mandili

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

One civilian man was killed and three others wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off in the district of Mandili, north of Baaquba district, a security source in Diala said.

“The IED went off near a civilian vehicle on the main road in southern Mandili district, (55 km) northeast of Baaquba, killing one man and wounding three others,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The wounded were rushed to a nearby hospital in the district,” the source added, not giving further details about the explosion.

Baaquba, the capital city of Diala, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

3 bodies found in Wassit

WASSIT / Aswat al-Iraq:

Policemen found bodies of three unidentified civilians inside a vehicle in a town north of al-Kut city on Saturday, a security source in Wassit said.

“The three bodies, found near al-Aziziya town, (80 km) north of Kut, away from the highway that links Kut to Baghdad, showed signs of having been tortured,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The bodies were removed to the al-Zahraa Hospital morgue in Kut,” said the source.

Kut, the capital city of Wassit, lies 180 km southeast of Baghdad.

2 civilians killed in bombing western Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two civilians were killed and four persons were wounded when a roadside bomb went off in western Mosul city, a source from Ninewa police said on Saturday.

“The explosion targeted an Iraqi army patrol in the 17th of July neighborhood, western Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“An Iraqi soldier was among the injured,” he said.

“The two dead bodies were delivered to the morgue, while the four wounded people were admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment,” he added.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

3 soldiers wounded by gunmen fire in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: Three Iraqi army soldiers were wounded when unidentified gunmen opened fire at them in northern Mosul city on Friday, a source from Ninewa police said.

“The gunmen threw a hand-grenade at an Iraqi army checkpoint in al-Qahira neighborhood, northern Mosul, leaving three soldiers injured,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The wounded were rushed to a hospital for treatment,” said the source, not giving more details.

30 killed, 35 injured in Hilla suicide attack

At least 30 persons were killed and 35 others were wounded in the deadly suicide explosion that ripped through north of Hilla, a police source said on Friday.

“A female bomber blew up an explosive belt strapped to her body among a crowd of Shi'i visitors who are heading for Karbala near al-Askandariya district in north of Hilla, killing 30 and injuring 35,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency, noting that the death toll is likely to increase (Apparently, this was an attempt to spark the failed Iraqi sectarian internal fighting, again!).

2 children killed in landmine explosion in Babel

“A landmine went off near a football court in al-Askandariya district in north of Hilla, killing two children,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

British soldier dies in Iraq

BASRA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A British soldier died in a shooting incident Thursday in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, the Ministry of Defence in London said.

“It is with regret that the Ministry of Defence must announce the death of a soldier from 1st Battalion The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment in Basra, Iraq, on Thursday 12 February 2009,” the ministry said in a statement.

“The soldier died during a shooting incident in the early hours of the morning at the Contingency Operating Base,” it said.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated,” it added.

This is the first British soldier killed in the country in 2009.

The death brings

A total of 179 British service personnel have lost their lives in Iraq since the US-led invasion in March 2003.

Britain was part of the 2003 US-led coalition that invaded Iraq, and currently has about 4,100 troops stationed in the country, most of whom are based just outside the southern city of Basra.

35 killed or wounded in IED blast in Karbala

KARBALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Five Shi'i visitors were killed and 30 others wounded on Thursday when an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in the holy city of Karbala, according the province’s chief of operations.

“A home-made explosive charge went off in an alley near Qiblat al-Imam al-Hussain street, killing five visitors and wounding 30 others,” Lt. General Othman al-Ghanimi told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Earlier on Thursday (Feb. 12), a source from the province’s local council said that five persons were killed and 36 others wounded when a cooking gas cylinder exploded among a crowd of pilgrims attending a Shi'i occasion in Karbala.

“The incident took place around 50 meters from the Shrine of Imam Hussain,”the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
