22 Iraqis Killed in War Attacks, Including 15 in Khanaqin Suicide Bombing, More Attacks on US Forces, February 5, 2009


Yaqen.net reported the following news:

-  A Peshmerga Kurdish officer was killed, two soldiers were injured in a roadside bombing in Mindali.

- The 1920s Brigades fighters burned a US supplies truck west of Abu Gharib.

- A US Hummer vehicle was destroyed by a roadside bomb attack by fighters of Ansar Al-Sunnah in Al-Dour junction.

- US Al-Bakr air base was attacked by two mortar rounds by Ansar Al-Sunnah fighters.

- A US military vehicle was attacked by fighters of the former Iraqi Army General Command, resulting in destroying the vehicle and causing casualties, north of Al-Mahaweel, on the Baghdad-Al-Hillah road.

- Another US military vehicle was attacked by fighters of the former Iraqi Army General Command, resulting in destroying the vehicle and causing casualties, near Al-Iskandariya junction, on the Baghdad-Al-Hillah road.

- 2 corpses of Iraqi soldiers were found in Al-Shurqat.

- US forces killed an Iraqi man in Al-Diwaniya.

- A US vehicle was damaged by a roadside bomb in Al-Ghazaliya, west of Bahgdad.

- 12 decayed corpses were found in a Ba'aqouba mass grave.

- A US-recruited Sahwa fighters leader, Colonel Hikmat Al-Tikriti, was injured but his son was killed, three more relatives were injured by a bomb explosion, in Al-Dawoodi area, where he leads his fighters.

Policeman killed, 2 wounded in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A policeman was killed and another and a civilian man were wounded in two separate incidents in Mosul city on Thursday, a security source in Ninewa said.

“A policeman was killed by gunmen fire near his house in al-Jammasa, eastern Mosul. He was on a regular leave,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

In another incident, the same source said an improvised explosive device (IED) went off near a police patrol in Zanjili, western Mosul, leaving a patrolman and a civilian wounded near the explosion scene.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Iraqi soldier kidnapped near Kirkuk

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq:

Unidentified gunmen kidnapped a soldier southwest of Kirkuk city on Thursday, a senior security official said.

“Unidentified gunmen on Thursday (Feb. 5) kidnapped an Iraqi soldier in the area between al-Riad and al-Rashad districts (35 km) southwest of Kirkuk,” Brig. Sarhad Qader, the Kirkuk Districts’ Police Department chief, told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The gunmen escaped in the direction of Salah al-Din province,” the source added, not giving more details.

The oil-rich city of Kirkuk lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Journalist killed by policeman in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A journalist was killed when a policeman opened fire at him in southern Mosul city on Thursday, a security source in Ninewa said.

“The journalist, Sallam Arab al-Dawsaki, who works for al-Hadbaa newspaper, published in Mosul, was shot down by a policeman in front of his house in Wadi Hajar, southern Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Civilian killed, 2 wounded in fresh Diala blast

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq: A civilian man was killed and two others injured when an improvised explosive device went off south of the district of Mandili, Diala province, on Thursday, a security source said.

“An IED went off near a civilian vehicle in Ballour area, (10 km south of Mandili) killing a man and wounding two others,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Mandili lies 55 km north of Baaquba, the capital city of Diala, 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

14 killed in Khanaqin blast – source

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

The death toll from the Khanaqin suicide bombing attack inside a restaurant earlier on Thursday have increased to 14, according to a source from the district hospital.

“The number is exclusive to dead people received by the Khanaqin hospital,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He did not mention further details.

Khanaqin lies 155 km northeast of Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, which is 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

U.S. forces kill civilian in Diwaniya

DIWANIYA / Aswat al-Iraq:

U.S. troops on Thursday killed a civilian during a security raid in central Diwaniya, said a police source. “U.S. troops raided a house early Thursday (Feb. 5) in al-Jalabiya neighborhood in central Diwaniya, where they killed a civilian,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. No word was immediately available from the U.S. army on the incident. Diwaniya is 180 km south of Baghdad.

2 wounded by IED in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two civilians on Wednesday were injured when an explosive charge detonated near a U.S. patrol vehicle in eastern Mosul, according to a police source.

“On Wednesday, an improvised explosive device (IED) went off in al-Darkazliya area, eastern Mosul, while a U.S. army patrol vehicle was passing the location, wounding two civilians,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The source did not provide further details. According to the same source, another explosive charge targeted a police patrol in Bab al-Toub area, downtown Mosul, causing no casualties. The explosion occurred only 200 m from the building of Mosul’s provincial council, the source explained.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Civilian wounded by U.S. fire in Mosul

One civilian on Wednesday was wounded by random U.S. fire in downtown Mosul, an incident denied by a U.S. army media adviser.

“On Wednesday, a civilian was wounded by a U.S. patrol opened random fire in al-Sarjkhana area, downtown Mosul, in response to a hand grenade attack by a gunman,” a security source in Ninewa police told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. Speaking to Aswat al-Iraq news agency by phone, a media adviser for the U.S. forces, al-Muqdad Jibrael, denied the incident, saying that no U.S. patrol vehicle has opened fire in the concerned area.

IED wounds 9 cops in Diala

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq: Nine policemen on Wednesday were wounded when an explosive charge went off in front of a police station in northern Muqdadiya district, according to a security source.

“On Wednesday, an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in front of a police station in Nofil area (45 km northeast of Ba'aquba), wounding nine cops, including three who remain in critical condition,” a local police source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The wounded were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment,” the source added.

Ba'aquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

3 mass graves found in Diala

Policemen on Wednesday found three mass graves in north of Ba'aquba, according to a security source. “Police forces found three mass graves in the gardens of Albu Teaama village in al-Salam district in Khalis in north of Ba'aquba, the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The graves contain six decayed and beheaded bodies,” he added. “The bodies bore signs of torture,” he also said. Diala province, a mix of Sunnis and Shiites, extends to the northeast of Baghdad as far as the Iranian border. Its capital is Baaquba, 57 km northeast of Baghdad. It covers an area of 17,685 square kilometers (6,828 sq mi).

Unknown corpse found in western Mosul

Policemen on Tuesday found an unknown body in western Mosul city, a security source said.

“Policemen on Tuesday (Feb. 3) found an unidentified body in al-Thawra neighborhood in western Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The body of a 27-year-old man bore signs of gunshot wounds to the head, chest, and stomach,” he added.

He did not give further details.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Baaquba’s blasts leave 6 casualties

Six civilians were wounded in the two consecutive blasts that occurred in downtown Baaquba city earlier today, according to a local media source.

“On Tuesday, an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated inside an ambulance near a popular market in downtown Baaquba city. Another IED blast followed in the same place, leaving six civilians wounded, including four in critical condition,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

3 women wounded by U.S. fire in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A woman and her two daughters on Tuesday were wounded by U.S. fire in southeastern Mosul city, according to a police source.

“A U.S. patrol vehicle was clearing the way for itself in Falasteen neighborhood, southeastern Mosul, by shooting randomly at passers-by,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The fire injured a woman and her two daughters,” the source noted, adding that they have been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. No comment was immediately available from the U.S. side. Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.
