Gunmen shoot down Kirkuk local official

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq:

The director of the Financial Control Department in Kirkuk was assassinated by unidentified gunmen on Sunday, a police official in the city said.

“Unidentified gunmen inside a vehicle on Sunday morning opened fire on Aziz Razqo Nisan in front of his house in Dumez district, southern Kirkuk, killing him instantly,” Col. Ahmed Shmirani told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The victim was on his way for his work,” he added, not giving further information about the incident.

The oil-rich Kirkuk, a city of mixed Arab, Kurdish and Turkmen population, lies 250 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

3 killed, 21 wounded in 3 IED blasts in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Three people were killed and 21 others wounded in three attacks with improvised explosive devices in two separate incidents in central and western Baghdad, an Iraqi police source said.

“An IED went off on Saturday evening inside a billiard hall near the Kahramana square, central Baghdad, followed by another IED blast just outside the facility near a gathering of police and medics in the first blast spot, leaving two people killed and 11 others, including two policemen, wounded,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“In western Baghdad, another IED went off near a mosque in al-Sayediya area, killing a man and wounding 10 others,” the source added.

Mosul blast casualties up to 5 deaths, 52 wounded

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Casualties from Saturday’s earlier car bomb blast in Mosul rose to five deaths, including four children, and 52 wounded, all of them civilians, according to a security source in the city.

“Four children were among the deaths, while a number of women and children, including a one-year-old baby, were among the wounded,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Earlier, a security source said four civilians were killed and 35 others wounded when a car bomb ripped through a residential section in eastern Mosul.

“A car rigged with explosives and parked in a neighborhood in Kokgli area, eastern Mosul, blew up on Saturday (July 11), leaving four civilians killed and more than 35 others, including women and children, wounded,” the source had told Aswat al-Iraq.

“The number of casualties is likely to go up due to the powerful blast that took place in a densely-populated residential area,” the source said.

“The explosion also destroyed five inhabited houses,” he added, not giving further details.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Policeman killed in Mosul attack

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A policeman was killed in an attack on a checkpoint in a border area west of Mosul city on Saturday, a security source in Ninewa said.

“Two unidentified gunmen opened fire at a police checkpoint in the district of al-Bi’aj, (130 km) west of Mosul, leaving a policeman killed,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He did not give further details on the incident.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, 405 km north of Baghdad, has been witnessing daily acts of violence despite security campaigns conducted by local or federal security forces.

Gunmen kill civilian in Abu Ghraib

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Gunmen on Saturday killed one civilian in al-Wadi village, northern Abu Ghraib suburb (west of Baghdad), according to a security source.

“The incident took place at noon,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The gunmen were driving a small saloon car,” he said. “They opened fire on a civilian in the village,” he added. The source pointed out that the victim died instantaneously. “Police forces cordoned off the incident’s area,” he explained. “Search will continue to find the gunmen who have escaped to an unknown place,” he noted. Abu Ghraib suburb lies 19 km west of Baghdad.
