BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two policemen on Sunday were killed during an attack on their patrol in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, according to a security source.

“Unknown gunmen engaged in clashes with a police patrol in al-Jamea neighborhood, western Baghdad, killing two patrolmen,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The source did not provide further details.

IED kills, wounds 4 in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

One person on Sunday was killed and three others, including a cop, were wounded in an explosive charge blast that occurred near the provincial building in Mosul city, according to a local security source.

“Today, an improvised explosive device (IED) targeted an Iraqi army patrol vehicle in al-Jumhouriya St., 50 meters away from Ninewa’s provincial building in downtown Mosul city, killing one person and injuring three others, including a policeman,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The device was detonated by a mobile phone,” the source pointed out.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

2 policemen wounded in car bombing in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two policemen were wounded when a car bomb went off targeting their patrol north of Mosul city, a source from Ninewa province’s police said Saturday.

“The incident took place on Saturday evening,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The attack occurred in the al-Ghabat area, north of Mosul,” he said.

The source gave no more details.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Toll from Falluja car bomb reaches 7

FALLUJA / Aswat al-Iraq:

The commander of the Sahwa forces in the Garma district survived a suicide car bombing in Falluja, a source from the city’s police said Saturday, explaining that the blast left three dead of his guards and four injured.  

“The attack took place at around 6:30 p.m. today,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The attack targeted the motorcade of Colonel Saad Abbass, the commander of the Sahwa forces in the Garma district, east of Falluja” he said.

Three of the Sahwa commander’s guards, including two officers, were killed, while four civilians who were at the incident’s location were wounded,” he added.

The source did not mention further details.

Earlier, a source from the Falluja police said that the commander of the Sahwa forces in the Garma district survived a suicide car bombing in the city, explaining that the blast left two dead and four injured.  

Falluja city lies 45 km west of Baghdad.

Toll from Kirkuk blast rises to 267

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq:

The toll from the suicide bombing that took place on Saturday in Taza district of Kirkuk went up to 67 dead and 200 injured, said the director of the province’s health department.

“The toll is still rising due to the strength and location of the blast,” Dr. Sabah Ameen told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“A medic team from Kirkuk’s health directorate was delegated to help the victims,” he said.

“Other medic teams from Arbil and Sulaimaniya provinces also arrived to provide further help,” he added.

Earlier, Dr. Ameen said that the final toll from the blast that occurred in front of a Shiite mosque (Husseiniya) in southwestern Kirkuk province has reached 195.

Dr. Ameen explained that 35 persons were killed and 160 others were wounded.

Also earlier, Tahseen Kahiya, a member of the Kirkuk council, said that the truck bomb that went off in Taza district of the province destroyed around 50 houses, illuminating that until now there is no final toll of casualties as some of the victims are still under debris.

He said that a large number of civilians fell in the blast, and that rescue operations to rescue civilians from under the debris are still underway.

Kahiya said that the mosque’s imam, Sheikh Hassan, saw the big truck driven by the bomber, but he did not feel anything after that until he found himself in the hospital.

This attack is considered the biggest so far in Kirkuk in 2009.

The oil-rich city of Kirkuk lies 250 km northeast of Baghdad.

Kirkuk blast destroyed 50 houses – local official

The truck bomb that went off in Taza district of Kirkuk destroyed around 50 houses, said a member of the province’s council, explaining that until now there is no final toll of casualties as some of the victims are still under debris.

“A large number of civilians fell in the blast,” Tahseen Kahiya told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Rescue operations to rescue civilians from under the debris are still underway,” he said.

Earlier, the director of Kirkuk health director said that the final toll from the blast that occurred in front of a Shiite mosque (Husseiniya) southwestern Kirkuk province has reached 195.

The medic explained that 35 persons were killed and 160 others were wounded according to the current final count.

Kahiya illuminated that the mosque’s imam, Sheikh Hassan, “saw the big truck driven by the bomber, but he did not feel anything after that until he found himself in the hospital.”

This attack is considered the biggest so far in Kirkuk in 2009.
