Baghdad café blast kills 5, wounds 25

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Five persons on Wednesday were killed and 25 others were wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) ripped through a popular café in Baghdad.

“The explosion occurred inside a popular café in al-Shorta al-Rabea area, southwestern Baghdad,” a police source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The blast has caused severe damage to the café ,” he added. No information was immediately available from security sources.

IED leaves casualties in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Several persons on Wednesday were killed or wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off in southwestern Baghdad.

“An explosive device detonated inside a popular café in al-Shorta al-Rabea area, southwestern Baghdad, leaving a number of casualties,” an Aswat al-Iraq news agency correspondent, who was close to the scene of the blast, said.

“Four persons have been rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment,” he added.

No information was immediately available from security sources.

Bomb explodes near U.S. convoy in eastern Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

An improvised explosive device went off near a U.S. army convoy in eastern Baghdad, a police source said Wednesday.

“An explosive charge was detonated in al-Jawader neighborhood in the Sadr City in eastern Baghdad late Tuesday (June 2) targeting a U.S. army convoy,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“There is no immediate word on casualties among the forces,” he added, noting that the U.S. forces cordoned off the whole region.

Cop killed, another wounded in Mosul shooting

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

One policeman on Wednesday was killed and another was injured when unknown gunmen attacked their patrol vehicle in Mosul city, according to a local police source.

“The shooting occurred in al-Zanjali area, western Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The gunmen have fled to an unknown destination,” the source added.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

First U.S. soldier killed in June

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

One U.S. soldier was killed Tuesday in a bomb explosion in eastern Baghdad, the first in June, the U.S. army said.

“A U.S. Soldier died June 2 of combat-related injuries after an improvised explosive device detonated near a patrol in eastern Baghdad,” said the U.S. army in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The Soldier’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin,” it added.

This is the first U.S. fatality in June.

The death brings to 4,308 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003, including 87 soldiers killed in 2009.

U.S. army announces 25 casualties in May

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two U.S. servicemen have died as a result of non-combat related incidents in Thi-Qar province, raising the number of U.S. fatalities in May 2009 to 25.

The deaths bring the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003 to 4,307, including 86 in 2009.
