NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Casualties from Thursday’s earlier car bomb attack that targeted a foreign security firm patrol rose to one death and 16 wounded, a source from Ninewa police said.

“Casualties from the attack that took place in al-Dawasa area, central Mosul, rose to one death and 16 wounded, all of them civilians,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The car bomb was parked on the roadside and was not driven by a suicide bomber,” he added.

Earlier, a Ninewa police source told Aswat al-Iraq that an explosive vehicle driven by a suicide bomber went off near a foreign security firm patrol, leaving one civilian killed and four others wounded.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

U.S. soldier killed in Kirkuk

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

A U.S. soldier was killed in an attack that targeted his patrol in the northern Iraq province of Kirkuk on Thursday, the second announced U.S. death during the past few days, according to the U.S. army in Iraq.

“North Soldier died from injuries received during a grenade attack on a patrol in the Kirkuk province of northern Iraq, June 4,” read a U.S. army release as received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

It did not give further details.

This is the second U.S. fatality in June.

The death brings to 4,309 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003, including 88 soldiers killed in 2009.

Baghdad blast wounds 5 civilians

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Five civilians were wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off in southern Baghdad on Thursday, an Iraqi interior ministry source said.

“The IED went off in al-Dora area, southern Baghdad, leaving five civilians wounded,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The explosion did not target any Iraqi security facilities,” the source said, not giving further details.

U.S. soldier wounded in Falluja

ANBAR / Aswat al-Iraq:

One U.S. soldier was wounded when his patrol came under attack east of Falluja district, a local police source said on Thursday.

“The incident took place at Garmat-Ali district, where a gunman opened fire from an elevated position targeting the patrol,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“It is not known yet whether the soldier died,” he added.

The U.S. side denied over the phone that it knew anything about the attack.

Falluja, the largest city in the predominantly Sunni province of al-Anbar, lies 45 km west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
