Date: 11 / 03 / 2009  Time:  09:47
Hebron – Ma’an –

Israeli terrorist forces have imposed a curfew on the southern West Bank town of Beit Ummar since Tuesday night and arrested more than 30 Palestinians.

All entrances into and out of the village have been closed by the Israeli military for more than 24 hours. Residents report that Israeli soldiers are holding entire Palestinian families captive in their own homes.

Eyewitnesses told Ma’an that dozens of Israeli military vehicles stormed the town overnight on Tuesday, imposed a curfew and ransacked several homes.

Palestinians reported that the operation was ongoing early Wednesday afternoon, and that several more residents have been abducted.

Meanwhile, Israeli soldiers maintained a curfew over the village and were conducting house-to-house searches of homes in the area.

Soldiers also occupied the roofs of buildings in order to monitor the surrounding area, witnesses said. Others said several residents were forced to evacuate their homes, and troops inspected homes and rifled through their interiors.

The main mosque in Beit Ummar was also ransacked after soldiers blew in its gate with explosives, and other military canine units searched homes and used dogs "to scare people," according to one resident.

According to Amjad Al-Najjar, head of the Prisoners’ Society in Beit Ummar, more than 32 people were apprehended, and many of them were under 18. They were reportedly taken to an interrogation center at the Gush Etzion settlement near Hebron.

He also explained that a number of uninhabited homes were ransacked after soldiers blew up their doors.

Beit Ummar Mayor Nasri Sabarna said the Israeli operation came under the pretext that local youths pelted Israeli settlers' cars with stones as they drove through the town.

Local sources identified one of the 25 of the arrestees as 32-year-old Wahib Ikhlayyil, secretary of the Fatah movement in Beit Ummar.

Israeli forces also detained 18-year-old Imam Awad, 18-year-old Ibrahim Awad, Hussein Abu Ayyash, 23-year-old Muhammad Awad, 47-year-old Kamal 'Aadi, 22-year-old Salih Ikhlayyil, 22-year-old Khuwaylid Ikhlayyil, 24-year-old Khaldoun Ikhlayyil, 28-year-old Mufeed Ikhlayyil and 20-year-old Wael Abu Ayyash.

Among the others detained were Raed Ikhlayyil, Ammar Abu Maria, Jamal 'Ikhlayyil, Issa Awad, Walid Sabarna, Muhammad Sabarna, Muhammad Suleibi, Muhammad 'Aadi, Yousif Khamis, Muhammad Abu Maria and Suheil Ibreigheith.

Israeli forces shot a Palestinian teenager in the head in Beit Ummar last week. The injured child is still in a hospital in Hebron.
