US Soldier, 9 Iraqis Killed, US-Recruited Sahwa Leader Arrested, More Attacks on US Forces, March 28, 2009

Editor's Note:

The US-recruited Sahwa fighters' services are no longer needed. Therefore, they are being arrested by the US-backed Iraqi forces.

On daily basis, scores of Iraqis are arrested by the US-backed Iraqi forces, scores of Iraqis are kidnapped or injured. Despite less killings, Iraqi is anything but enjoying security or stability.

Yaqen.net reported the following news:

- The US military base of Ain Al-Assad (formerly known as Al-Qadissiyah), which is located 10 kilometers away from Al-Baghdadi City, in Al-Anbar Province, was attacked with three rockets today.

- An Iraqi woman was killed, four of her children were injured by US soldiers in Palestine neighborhood in Mosul. They were traveling in their car when the US soldiers fired at them.

- A US convoy was attacked by a roadside bomb in Al-Muqdadiya, north of Ba'aqouba.

Amsi.org reported the following news:

- Ba'ath Party leader in Karbala, Sami Jaddou' and his brother were assassinated today. Many Ba'ath Party members and leaders were assassinated since the US invasion of Iraq.

- Iraqi government forces arrested a woman in Al-Iskandariya and US forces arrested another Iraqi woman in Al-Ghazaliya, on resistance allegations.

- A roadside bomb exploded in Al-Dor, targeting a US patrol.

- Three Iraqi civilians were killed, four were injured in Babil, on Friday, when their car collided with a convoy of US military vehicles, on Friday.

Clashes in central Baghdad – eyewitnesses

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Eyewitnesses said that clashes erupted on Saturday afternoon in central Baghdad, in the two neighborhoods of al-Kifah and Al-Bab Al-Mu'adham, between gunmen and security forces.

“Clashes are still ongoing. Light and medium arms have been used during them,” an eyewitness told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Police forces blocked the roads leading to Babal-Muadham, and engaged with unknown snipers,” another eyewitness said.

Security sources have not yet commented on the issue.

Sahwa leader captured in central Baghdad on “terror” charges – spokesman

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

A special force captured a sahwa (US-recruited) tribal leader and one of his aides in the central Baghdad area of al-Fadl on charges of “terrorism,” according to a senior security official on Saturday.

“Adel al-Mashhadani and an aide were captured by virtue of an arrest warrant,” Maj. General Qassem Atta, the official spokesman for the Baghdad Operations Command (BOC), told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Meanwhile, Iraqi police sources said two people were killed and six others wounded in clashes that erupted between security forces and gunmen after the arrest of Mashhadani and his aide.

Atta, however, said that the situation is now under the control of the Iraqi security forces that imposed a security cordon on the area and deployed on the streets and environs of the al-Fadl district, denying reported deaths.

Eyewitnesses had said that armed clashes broke out between security forces and unidentified gunmen in the areas of al-Kifah and Bab al-Muadham in central Baghdad.

4 injured in Mosul blast

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Four persons, including a cop, were wounded in a car bomb blast that ripped through southeastern Mosul city, a local security source said on Saturday.

“On Saturday, a car bomb went off near a policeman’s house in Sumar neighborhood, wounding four persons, including the policeman and his brother,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The wounded were rushed to the hospital for treatment, the source added, providing no further details.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

3 gunmen attack police in al-Dor

Three gunmen who opened fire at security forces in central al-Dor district were arrested on Friday, a police source from Salah al-Din said.

“Quick Response forces captured three masked gunmen who opened machine-gun fire at a security headquarters in central al-Dor,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The attack did not leave any casualties,” the source said, adding the Quick Response forces chased and captured the gunmen in al-Qadissiya neighborhood.

Salah al-Din province lies 175 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

U.S. soldier dies from non-combat related injures in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

A U.S. soldier died in Baghdad from non-combat related injuries, raising U.S. fatalities in March to seven soldiers, according to a statement from the U.S. army on Friday.

“A Multi-National Division–Baghdad Soldier died March 25 from non-combat related injuries,” said the statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The incident is under investigation,” it added.

The death brings the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003 to 4,261.

Civilian killed, body found separately in Ninewa

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A civilian man was killed inside his store while policemen found the body of a Yazidi man killed in tribal feud in two separate incidents in Ninewa province on Thursday, police said.

“Unidentified gunmen threw a hand-grenade at a man inside his liquor store in the area of al-Faysaliya, eastern Mosul, killing him instantly and escaping to an unknown place,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Meanwhile, the source said policemen found the body of a farm guard who belongs to the Yazidi religious minority in the district of Boesheiqa, east of Mosul.

“The man, who showed signs of having been shot, was killed apparently in a tribal feud that has nothing to do with any armed operations,” he added.

“The police launched a probe into the incident in a bid to arrest the culprits,” the source said.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Civilian wounded in hand-grenade blast

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A civilian man was wounded in a hand-grenade attack on Thursday in central Mosul, where the culprit was later arrested, a source from Ninewa police said.

“A man was injured when a gunman hurled a hand-grenade at his store in the area of al-Dawasa, central Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The police captured the perpetrator after a chase in the same area,” the source added.

“The detainee is under investigative custody while the wounded was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment,” the source said, not giving further details about the incident.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

3 wounded in Babel car bomb blast

BABEL / Aswat al-Iraq:

A car bomb went off in northern Babel on Thursday, leaving three people wounded and destroying several adjacent pharmacies, a police source in the province said.

“A light pickup truck went off at 04:00 p.m. on Thursday in the area of al-Iskan, al-Iskandariya district, (50 km) north of al-Hilla, wounding three people and destroying pharmacies nearby,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He did not give more details.

Hilla, the capital city of Babel province, lies 100 km south of Baghdad.
