U.S. soldier killed in Salah al-Din

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

A U.S. soldier was killed in an attack on a military patrol in Salah al-Din province on Saturday, the third announced dead in March 2009, the U.S. army said on Sunday.

“The soldier died of wounds he sustained in an attack on a U.S. patrol in Salah al-Din on Saturday,” according to a U.S. army statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The statement did not give more details.

The announced death increases to 4,256 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003.

Lt. Daniel Hyde, 24, of Modesto is reported to have died in Iraq in service with the U.S. Army. The military has not released information about Hyde's death, but his family has confirmed his passing.

Hyde was an Airborne Ranger-qualified infantry officer serving with the 3rd Infantry Brigade of the 25 Infantry Division. He graduated from Downey High School in 2003 and from the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. in 2007.

Hyde is the 27th service member from the Northern San Joaquin Valley to be killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Civilian gunned down in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: A civilian was killed on Monday in a random shooting in western Mosul city, according to a police source.

“A civilian was killed in a random shooting in Ra’s al-Jada region in western Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The civilian got a bullet in his head while he was inside his vegetables store,” he explained.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, is 405 km north of Baghdad.

Gunmen wound 3 civilians in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: Three civilians were wounded on Monday by unknown gunmen in eastern Mosul city, a security source said.

“Unidentified gunmen opened fire on an Iraqi army checkpoint in al-Zuhour neighborhood in eastern Mosul, injuring three passing civilians, including a university professor,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The wounded were sent to a nearby hospital for treatment,” he noted.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, is 405 km north of Baghdad.

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: Two policemen were killed and a civilian was wounded by unknown gunmen on Monday in western Mosul, a police source said.

“Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police checkpoint in Mosul al-Jadieda region in western Mosul, killing two policemen and injuring a civilian,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The two bodies were sent to the morgue, while the wounded was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment,” he noted.

Unknown corpse found in Diala

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq: Security forces on Monday found an unknown body south of al-Saadiya district of Diala province, according to a security source.

“The body was found in Himreen village, 17 km south of al-Saadiya district,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The corpse belongs to a man in his twenties,” he said. “The body bore signs of gunshot wounds and torture and was delivered to the morgue,” he added. Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

2 Sahwa fighters killed in armed attack

Two US-recruited Sahwa fighters on Monday were killed in an armed attack against a checkpoint in western Baghdad, according to a police source.

“Today, unknown gunmen attacked a checkpoint set up by Sahwa members in al-Jihad neighborhood, western Baghdad, killing two of them,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The gunmen fled to an unknown destination after the attack,” the source added.

4 policemen wounded in 2 blasts

SALAH AL-DIN / Aswat al-Iraq: Four police personnel were injured in two blasts that ripped through Salah al-Din’s al-Dour district, a local police source said on Monday.

“On Sunday evening, a gunman threw a hand grenade at a police patrol vehicle in downtown al-Dour district (25 km south of Tikrit city), wounding three patrolmen,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Shortly after police arrived at the scene, an improvised explosive device (IED) went off, wounding a policeman and destroying his vehicle,” the source added. Tikrit, the capital city of Salah al-Din province, lies 175 km north of Baghdad.

Student gunned down in Mosul

One civilian on Sunday was shot down by unknown gunmen in downtown Mosul city, according to a local police source.

“On Sunday, unidentified gunmen opened fire on a technical institute student in Bab Laksh area, downtown Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The source did not provide further details.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Civilian kidnapped in eastern Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Unknown gunmen on Sunday kidnapped a civilian in Baghdad’s eastern city of Sadr, according to a local police source.

“Today, unidentified gunmen driving two civilian vehicles kidnapped a 30-year-old man near Hily markets in downtown Sadr city,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The kidnappers have fled to an unknown destination, the source added, providing no further details.

3rd blast in Baghdad leaves 2 sahwa fighters wounded

Two sahwa tribal fighters were wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off in western Baghdad on Sunday, police said.

“An IED planted by unidentified gunmen on a main road in the area of al-Ghazaliya, western Baghdad, went off when a vehicle boarded by two sahwa fighters was passing by, leaving the two of them injured and the vehicle damaged,” a security source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Earlier, an Iraqi police source said two civilians were wounded from a sticky IED blast in al-Allawi, central Baghdad.

In eastern Baghdad, a suicide bomber with an explosive belt blew himself up amongst a gathering of police recruits near the Police Academy on Falastine street, leaving 23 people killed and 50 others wounded. Medics say the casualties are most likely to rise.

Blast death toll jumps to 23, wounded 50 – medic

The deaths from an earlier suicide bombing attack near the Police Academy in Baghdad rose to 23 and the wounded to 50, a medic said on Sunday.

“Al-Kindi hospital today (March 8) received 23 dead people and 50 wounded others victims of the suicide blast that took place near the Police Academy in eastern Baghdad amidst a gathering of police recruits,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Earlier, medics of al-Kindi Hospital said the death toll rose to 10 while the wounded jumped to 30.

8 mass graves unearthed in Diala

Eight mass graves with 25 unidentified bodies were unearthed north of Ba'aquba city on Sunday, the Diala police chief said.

“Forces from al-Salam district police department today (March 8) discovered eight mass graves in the village of Al-Bu Tiema, al-Khalis district, (15 km) north of Baaquba,” Maj. General Abdulhussein al-Shimari told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The 25 unidentified bodies have all showed signs of having been shot,” he said.

During the period that followed the launch of Operation Bashaer al-Khair (Promise of Good) in July 2008, 20 mass graves with 130 bodies, mostly of civilians killed in sectarian strife, were discovered in al-Bu Tiema village. Those civilians were killed by Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) operatives after the armed network wielded power over the village and practiced forced relocation of its local residents.

According to security source in the province, the village used to be a key stronghold of the AQI.

Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

2 civilians wounded in 2nd Baghdad blast

Two civilians were wounded in a sticky improvised explosive device attack in central Baghdad on Sunday, the second in the city today, an Iraqi police source said.

“A sticky explosive charge attached to a civilian vehicle went off on Sunday morning in the area of al-Allawi, central Baghdad, wounding two civilians,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The wounded were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment,” the source added, not giving more details.

Earlier in the day (March 8), medics told Aswat al-Iraq that the death toll from an earlier suicide bombing attack near the Police Academy in Baghdad rose to 10 while the wounded jumped to 30.

Four civilians were wounded, three of them seriously, when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off near their vehicle in southern al-Saadiya district, Diala province, on Saturday, the local police said.

“The IED blew up near the vehicle in the area of Imam & Yassin, southern al-Saadiya, (100 km) north of Baaquba, wounding all four passengers on board,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The three seriously wounded people were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment,” he said, not giving more information.

Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Police officer wounded in IED blast in Mosul

A police officer was wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off near his patrol in southern Mosul on Saturday, a security source in Ninewa said.

“The IED went off near the police patrol close to al-Mosul public hospital in Wadi Hajar, southern Mosul, leaving a police officer in the rank of lieutenant injured,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“He was rushed to the hospital for treatment,” the source added, not giving further details about the incident.

U.S. forces killed gunman in Baiji

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

U.S. troops killed a man in Baiji, said a U.S. source, explaining that the man is an amir (senior member) of al-Qaeda Organization in the area.

“The forces entered a neighborhood at al-Qayiara area of Baiji (35 km) north of Tikrit, to track down some accomplices of a detainee,” Lt. Colonel Braen Maki told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The forces came under fire from a man with a pistol when they went inside a house,” he said.

“The force responded and killed him,” he added.

Maki added that the house was empty when the incident took place but from two men who were arrested for interrogation.

Earlier, a source from Salah al-Din police said U.S. forces handed over the body of a man who was shot dead to the Iraqi police in Baiji city, claiming that he was a gunman who attacked a U.S. patrol that killed him, but the dead man’s relatives said that the forces killed him in front of his family.

Tikrit, the capital city of Salah al-Din province, lies 175 km north of Baghdad.

2 unknown bodies found near Makhmour

Two unknown bodies on Saturday were found near Makhmour district, according to an army source.

“Today, army forces found two unknown bodies belonging to civilians on the main road between al-Qayara and Makhmour district,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The body bore signs of gunshot wounds and was taken to the morgue, the source added.
