5 US Soldiers Killed by a Fellow Soldier in Baghdad Base, a 6th Killed by a Roadside Bomb, 5 Iraqis Killed, 39 Arrested

Yaqen.net reported the following news:

- A US soldier killed five of his fellow soldiers and injured three more in a shooting in the Liberty military base in Baghdad.

- Corpses of three Iraqis who were kidnapped three days ago were found today in Al-Tarimiya, north of Baghdad.

- A US vehicle was attacked by a roadside bomb in Ur, east of Baghdad.

- The Baghdad Green Zone was attacked with one mortar round.

IED kills U.S. soldier in Basra

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

One U.S. soldier was killed in a bomb explosion in Basra in southern Iraq, the U.S. army said in a statement on Monday.

“A Multi-National Division – South Soldier died when an improvised explosive device struck his vehicle in the Basra Province at approximately 2 p.m. May 10,” said the statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The Soldier’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin,” it added.

The death brings to 4,293 the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003.

Eleven U.S. solders have been so far killed in May.

5 U.S. soldiers killed in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Five U.S. soldiers were killed on Monday in a shooting inside a U.S. base in Baghdad, the U.S. army said.

“Five Multi-National Forces were killed in a shooting inside al-Houriya base in Baghdad at 2:00 p.m. on Monday (May 11),” the U.S. army said in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The incident under investigation,” it added, without giving further details.

The deaths bring to 4,292 the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003.

U.S. vehicle damaged in IED blast in Basra

BASRA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A U.S. military vehicle was damaged in a roadside improvised explosive device (IED) blast in southern Basra on Monday, according to the province’s police information office.

“An IED went off near a U.S. patrol in the area of al-Siba, (50 km) southern Basra, causing damage to one of the vehicles but no casualties were reported,” the office told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

This is the fourth time in two weeks a U.S. patrol comes under IED attacks.

Aswat al-Iraq failed to contact the U.S. side for comments.

The oil-rich port city of Basra lies 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Cop killed, another wounded in armed attack in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A policeman was killed and another wounded in an armed attack in central Mosul city on Monday, a police source in Ninewa said.

“Unidentified gunmen opened fire at policemen in front of pedestrians on Ghazi street, central Mosul, killing one and wounding another,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The gunmen then escaped to an unknown place,” he added.

“The policemen, who belong to the Ninewa city hall, were walking down the street in civvies when the gunmen attacked them,” he said.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Traffic officer assassinated in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

A police brigadier on Monday was gunned down inside his car in downtown Baghdad, according to a police source.

“An operations director in the traffic police, Abdulhussein Mohsin al-Kadhemi, died after unknown gunmen had opened fire on him while he was inside his car on al-Saadon Street, downtown Baghdad,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The attack is the second to target a traffic official in 24 hours. A traffic director, Maj. Gen. Jaafar Abd Jaafar, survived an assassination attempt on Sunday (May 10), when a roadside improvised explosive device (IED) targeted his vehicle in al-Huriyya Square, downtown Baghdad.

19 wanted men arrested in Karbala

KARBALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Nineteen wanted persons on Monday were arrested by security forces in Karbala province, according to a local police chief.

“Security personnel arrested 19 wanted men, including five on terror charges,” Staff Maj. Gen. Ali Jassem Mohammed told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Warrants have been issued against those arrested,” Jassem added.

The holy Shiite city of Karbala lies 110 km southwest of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

20 persons arrested in Diala

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Twenty persons, including wanted men, have been arrested during a security operation in Diala province, a local security source said on Monday.

“On Sunday evening, an Iraqi army force carried out a military operation in villages affiliated with Mandali district (55 km east of Baaquba),” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Six wanted men and 14 suspects were captured during the operation,” the source added. Operation Bashaer al-Kheir (Promise of Good) II, launched a few days ago, is covering all areas of Diala, where 21,000 personnel from the police, the Iraqi army’s 5th Division and two army brigades from outside the province are taking part. Operation Bashaer al-Kheir I, which was launched at the end of July 2008, covered all areas of Diala. Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.
