US Soldier, 12 Iraqis Killed, Scores Injured in War Attacks, Several Attacks on US Forces

- 3 People were killed, 11 were injured in a car bomb explosion in Beiji, north of Tikrit, today, May 24, 2009.

- A body of a murdered man was found in Nazal neighborhood in Al-Falloujah.

- The governor of Salahuddin Province was targeted for an assassination attempt by attacking his convoy with a roadside bomb near Tikrit. He survived with wounds.

- A policeman was killed, two were injured in two attacks in Mosul.

- A US convoy was attacked north of Al-Hillah with a roadside bomb.

- A US forces patrol was attacked in Mosul with a car bomb, resulting in casualties.


Gunmen shoot down woman, daughter in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A woman and her daughter were killed by unidentified gunmen inside their home in southeastern Mosul on Sunday, a security source from the Ninewa police operations room said.

“Four unidentified gunmen stormed the house of a family in Falastine neighborhood, southeastern Mosul, and opened fire on a woman and her daughter inside, killing them instantly,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The gunmen escaped to an unknown place,” the source added.

Policeman, 2 civilians wounded in Baghdad blast

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

One policeman and two civilians were wounded in an improvised explosive device (IED) in northern Baghdad on Sunday, police said.

“An IED planted by unidentified persons on the main road in al-Dalal Square, al-Aadhamiya area, northern Baghdad, went off near an Iraqi army patrol, wounding one policeman and two civilians,” a security source in Baghdad told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The blast damaged one of the patrol vehicles,” he said, adding “security forces sealed off the explosion site and rushed the wounded to a nearby hospital for treatment”.

Mosul car bomb leaves 34 wounded

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Thirty-four people were wounded Sunday’s earlier car bomb blast in central Mosul, a Ninewa police source said.

“A car rigged with explosives driven by a suicide bomber went off near the Youths & Sports Department in central Mosul. The explosion, which targeted a U.S. army patrol, left 34 persons wounded,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Fifteen nearby car repair stores, as well as several vehicles, were damaged in the attack,” the source added.

According to Aswat al-Iraq’s correspondent at the scene of the blast, the explosion left a crater three meters wide in the street.

Eyewitnesses in the area said none of the U.S. patrolmen were harmed, adding the U.S. forces cordoned off the site.

Earlier, a police source in Ninewa said a car bomb went off near a U.S. patrol in central Mosul city, reportedly leaving an unidentified number of casualties.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Car bomb blast rocks central Mosul, casualties reported

A car rigged with explosives driven by a suicide bomber went off near a U.S. patrol in central Mosul city, reportedly leaving an unidentified number of casualties, a Ninewa police source said on Sunday.

“A suicide bomber blew up his explosive vehicle near a U.S. army patrol in the area of al-Dawasa, central Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The casualties have not yet been counted,” he said.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

2 civilians killed, 3 wounded in armed attack in Jalawlaa

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two civilians were killed and three others wounded when they came under unidentified gunmen fire in the district of Jalawlaa, Diala province, on Saturday, a local security source said.

“Unknown gunmen opened fire today (May 23) on a group of civilians in Tabaj area, Jalawlaa, (30 km) southwest of Khanaqin district, leaving two killed and three others wounded, two of them in a critical condition,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Khanaqin lies 155 km northeast of Baaquba city.

“The gunmen were boarding an Opel vehicle during the attack and escaped to an unknown place,” he said. “The wounded were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment”.

Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, is 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Senior officer escapes attempt in Falluja

A senior officer survived an attempt on his life with an improvised explosive device (IED) that targeted him in a village of the Karmat al-Falluja district on Saturday, an official security source said.

“An IED target Lt. Colonel Abad Sallam Khawaf, who was returning to the al-Shahid police station in the village of al-Qanater, Karmat al-Falluja district, eastern Falluja city, but escaped the attempt,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“No casualties were reported in the blast,” he added, not giving more information.

3 policemen wounded in IED blast in Mosul

Three policemen were wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off in central Mosul city on Saturday, a security source in Ninewa said.

“The IED targeted an Iraqi police patrol in the area of Bab al-Toub, central Mosul, leaving three policemen who sustained different types of wounds,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“One of the patrol vehicles was damaged in the explosion,” he added.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

U.S. soldier dies from non-combat related incident

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

A U.S. serviceman has dies as a result of a non-combat related incident, the U.S. army said on Saturday. “A Multi-National Corps - Iraq Soldier died in a non-combat related incident in Baghdad Province, May 22,” read a U.S. army statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin and release by the Department of Defense,” the statement noted. Eighteen U.S. soldiers were killed in May 2009. The death brings the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003 to 4,300.

Officer wounded by IED in Mosul

A police officer on Saturday was wounded in an explosive device blast in southern Mosul city, according to a local security source.

“Today, an improvised explosive device (IED) went off in front of the house of Lt. Col. Taha Mohammed in a Shura district village, southern Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The source did not provide further information about the incident.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Son of Sahwa council leader found dead

Police forces on Saturday found the body of the son of a Sahwa council leader two days after he was kidnapped in southern Baaquba city, according to a local police source.

“The body was found in Abbara Bahraz area, nearly 5 km south of Ba'aquba,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The body bore signs of gunshot wounds to the head,” the source noted. The Sahwa councils are anti-Qaeda fighters working in coordination with the Multi-National Force (MNF) and the Iraqi government. Headed by local chieftains, the councils have been credited with helping reduce violence in many Iraqi provinces, like Anbar, Diala, Ninewa, and Salah al-Din. Ba'aquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

2 rockets land near archeological city of Ur

Two rockets on Saturday fell near the archeological city of Ur, Nassiriya province, but no casualties were reported, according to a statement released by the Multi-National Force (MNF).

“On Saturday morning, two rockets were launched from Albo Fayyad area (10 km south of Nassiriya city) near the archeological temple in Ur city,” read the statement that was received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “This is the first rocket attack on the site since it was officially received from the MNF,” the statement explained. Local police forces cordoned off the rocket launch site, the statement added. On May 13, 2009, local authorities in Thi-Qar province received responsibility for the archeological city of Ur that has been under the U.S. forces’ control since 2003.

Nasseriya, the capital city of Thi-Qar province, lies 380 km south of Baghdad.

U.S. forces shoot down civilian north of Tikrit

An Iraqi civilians was shot down by U.S. soldiers after opening fire at a U.S. patrol on Friday, an Iraqi police source in Tikrit said.

“An Iraqi civilian man opened fire from his Kalashnikov assault rifle he took out from his vehicle while a U.S. patrol of several Humvee vehicles were passing by in al-Qadissiya neighborhood, northern Tikrit,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The man opened fire at the patrolmen who fired back, killing him instantly,” he added.

“The Iraqi police removed the body of 37-year-old Ibrahim al-Ojaili, a jobless man, to the Tikrit Public Hospital morgue, where his family received it,” the source said.

No statements were made by the U.S. army on the incident.

Tikrit, the capital city of Salah al-Din province, lies 175 km north of Baghdad.
