2 US Soldiers Killed, 3 Injured by an Iraqi Soldier in Mosul, 43 Iraqis Arrested

Iraqi soldier kills 2 U.S. soldiers south of Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two U.S. soldiers were killed by an Iraqi soldier’s fire inside one of the Iraqi army’s camps to the south of the city of Mosul on Saturday, an officials security source in Ninewa said.

“An Iraqi soldier opened fire today (May 2) on U.S. army personnel who were inside an Iraqi military camp in Hammam al-Aleel district, south of Mosul, killing two of them instantly,” the source, who preferred not to be named, told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The source did not give further details on the incident or the fate of the Iraqi soldier. Aswat al-Iraq failed to contact the U.S. side for comments.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

U.S. army says 2 soldiers killed, 3 wounded near Mosul

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two U.S. soldiers were killed and three others wounded when they came under “small arms fire attack” in a front combat post south of Mosul city on Saturday, according to a U.S. army statement.

“According to initial reports, an individual dressed in an Iraqi Army uniform fired on the Coalition forces and was killed in the incident,” read the statement as received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Earlier on Saturday, an official security source in Ninewa said that two U.S. soldiers were killed by an Iraqi soldier’s fire inside one of the Iraqi army’s camps to the south of Mosul.

“An Iraqi soldier opened fire on U.S. army personnel who were inside an Iraqi military camp in Hammam al-Aleel district, south of Mosul, killing two of them instantly,” the source, who preferred not to be named, told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The deaths bring to 4,283 the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. Eighteen soldiers were killed in April 2009.

3 rockets land near U.S. consulate in Hilla

Three Katyusha rockets landed near the U.S. consulate in central al-Hilla city on Sunday without incident, the Babel police chief said.

“The Katyushas only slightly damaged some residential buildings near the consulate that is using the Babel tourist hotel as its headquarters,” Maj. General Fadel Raddad told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The local police launched an on the spot search and raid in the area of al-Bu Hneir, (5 km) east of Hilla, from where the rockets were fired,” he said, adding the forces seized a home-made launching pad carrying nine rockets ready for firing in the consulate’s direction.

“The rockets were defused by specialists,” he said.

Hilla, the capital city of Babel province, lies 100 km south of Baghdad.

3 wounded in car bomb blast in Mosul

Three people were wounded when a car rigged with explosives went off in central Mosul city on Sunday, a police source in Ninewa said.

“A car bomb inside a parking lot of the Sunni Endowment Funds Investment Authority in central Mosul went off as an Iraqi army vehicle was passing by, leaving three persons, including a traffic policeman, wounded,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“No Iraqi army personnel were wounded and the military vehicle was not damaged in the explosion,” he added.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Security campaign launched in Falluja

A security campaign was launched in search of weapons and wanted “terrorist” elements to the east of the city of al-Falluja on Sunday, a security source from al-Anbar province said.

“A combined force from the 6th Anbar Emergency Contingent and local police set up a security cordon around the eastern Falluja neighborhoods of al-Shurta, al-Dhobbat, al-Jegheifi and al-Askari in search of whatever weapons and explosives remained, as well as wanted men who have ties to armed groups,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The force embarked on a house-to-house search and imposed a curfew and vehicle ban in these areas pending the completion of the campaign,” he added.

Falluja, the largest city in the predominantly Sunni province of al-Anbar, has been a stage for acts of violence and armed operations since 2004.

Falluja, 45 km west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, restored stability only after the tribal sahwa (awakening) forces flushed al-Qaeda network gunmen out.

Arrests:

29 wanted men arrested, ammo seized in Basra

BASRA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Twenty-nine wanted men on Sunday were captured and an amount of arms and ammunition was seized during a security operation that covered different parts of Basra province, according to a local security official.

“On Sunday, forces from the Iraqi police and army conducted a wide-scale raid in Nahr Khouz area of Abi al-Khaseeb (15 km south of Basra city),” the director of the relations and media office in Basra police, Abdulkareem el-Zaidi, told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Twenty-nine wanted men were arrested, including six on terror-related charges,” Zaidi noted. “Six improvised explosive devices (IEDs), 10 rifles and a pistol were found inside the house of one of those arrested,” Zaidi added.

The Shiite city of Basra lies 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Dangerous wanted man nabbed in downtown Amara

Police personnel on Sunday arrested a “dangerous wanted person” in downtown Amara city, according to a local police chief.

“The man was arrested on terror and criminal charges during an operation in downtown Amara,” Staff. Brig. Sadeq Abdulazeem told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. During interrogation, the man has confessed to having been involved in the shelling of security headquarters and the planting of bombs, as well as the planning of assassinations of several leading figures in the province, the official noted.

Amara, the capital city of Missan province, lies 390 km south of Baghdad.

3 arrested in Arbil for selling child’s kidney

ARBIL / Aswat al-Iraq:

Three persons were arrested in Arbil on charges of attempting to sell a child’s kidney, the city’s police chief said on Sunday.

“Three Arab citizens from Baghdad brought a child’s kidney to sell in Arbil last month,” Brig. Abdulkhaleq Talaat told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Meanwhile, Talaat added, two persons were arrested for killing the guard of a travel agent with the purpose of stealing, and two others were arrested for killing a Christian woman in the district of Enkawa, northern Arbil.

Enkawa, 5 km northwest of Arbil, is an area with a Christian majority.

“Another young man was arrested for involvement in 20 theft scores in several neighborhoods in Arbil,” said Talaat, adding the arrests were made last month.

Arbil, the capital city of the autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan region, lies 364 km north of Baghdad.

10 wanted men arrested in Diala

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Policemen in Diala captured 10 wanted men and seized arms and munitions in different areas of the province on Sunday, the city’s police chief said.

“The 10 suspected members of al-Qaeda network were arrested as part of Bashaer al-Kheir (Promise of Good) II today (May 3) and seized 51 rifles and three improvised explosive devices,” Maj. General Abdulhussein al-Shimari told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Moreover, four displaced families have returned to their original areas in the province,” he said.

Operation Bashaer al-Kheir II, which aims to eliminate all outlaws, AQI members and all wanted persons, is covering all areas of Diala, where 21,000 personnel from the police, the Iraqi army’s 5th Division and two army brigades from outside the province are taking part.

Operation Bashaer al-Kheir I, which was launched at the end of July 2008, covered all areas of Diala.

The province of Diala lies 57 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
