MOSCOW, November 13, 2009 (Itar-Tass) --

An explosion occurred at the Russian Defense Ministry depot in Ulyanovsk. Possible casualties are being verified, acting ministry spokesman Col. Alexei Kuznetsov told Itar-Tass on Friday.

“An explosion at the Defense Ministry depot occurred on the eastern outskirts of Ulyanovsk at about 4:00 p.m. Moscow time, presumably during the disposal of munitions. The explosion sparked a fire,” he said. “The fire spread onto other buildings. Firemen and the regional department of the Emergency Situations Ministry are trying to contain the blaze. The area is cordoned.”

The regional government formed an operative staff under the supervision of Ulyanovsk Governor Sergei Morozov.

Military prosecutors are holding the investigation.

Ulyanovsk residents have been recommended to make reserves of drinking water and to acquire gauze masks. Besides, traffic will be limited near the fire scene.

Railroad traffic was suspended at the Verkhnaya Terrasa station until further notice because of the fire. The station is three kilometers away from the depot.
