Casualties from Karbala blasts reach 42

KARBALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Casualties from the three blasts that rocked Karbala province earlier today have reached 42, a security source said on Wednesday.

“This evening, three devices went off in Karbala, killing two, including a woman, and injuring 40 others,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. Meanwhile, a media official in the province said that precautionary measures have been taken to protect the holy shrines in the city.

Earlier today, three explosive devices went off in Karbala province. The first blast occurred in al-Dahan market, the second only 50 meters from the first, while the third explosion occurred near al-Ahyaa garage in al-Mukhayyam area (500 meters west of Imam al-Abbas shrine). The holy Shiite city of Karbala lies 110 southwest of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Two blasts hit U.S. patrol in Thi-Qar

THI-QAR / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two roadside bombs hit on Wednesday a U.S. patrol at al-Refa'ee area of Thi-Qar province without causing casualties, while a third bomb in the area was dismantled.

“The two blasts left only some damages in a U.S. patrol,” Sajad al-Asadi, head of Thi-Qar security committee, told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He said that U.S. forces were able to find a locally made third bomb planted at the area.

“The forces dismantled the third bomb,” he said.

Nasseriya, the capital city of Thi-Qar province, lies 380 km south of Baghdad.

Gunmen kill guard in Mosul

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Gunmen killed a guard of the Ninewa Sunni endowment directorate, a security source from the province said on Wednesday.

“Unknown armed men opened fire today targeting a guard of the Ninewa Sunni endowment directorate near his house at the al-Ikhaa neighborhood, eastern Mosul city,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He said that the victim was on vacation.

“The gunmen were able to escape to an unknown place,” the source said.

He did not mention further details.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Mosque’s imam injured by sticky bomb in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

 Imam of Abu Haniefa al-Nuaaman mosque was wounded Wednesday in a sticky bomb explosion in northern Baghdad, a police source said.

“A bomb, stuck to the vehicle of Sheikh Abdulsattar Abduljabbar, went off on Wednesday (Oct. 14) near the mosque in al-Aadhamiya region, northern Baghdad, injuring him along with his driver,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The blast damaged the car,” he added, noting that they were rushed to al-Nuaaman hospital for treatment.

Armed attack kills 7 civilians, injures 14 in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

At least seven civilians were killed and 14 others were wounded in an armed attack in northern Baghdad on Wednesday, a police source said.

“Unknown gunmen attacked a marketplace of al-Jawadeen neighborhood in al-Shuaala region, northern Baghdad, using light weapons and hand grenades to steal a jewelry store,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The gunmen killed seven civilians, including two women and a child and injured 14 civilians,” the source added.

“They managed to steal a number of jewelry stores and fled to unknown place,” he said.

Suicide attack leaves 16 casualties in Diala

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

At least six persons were killed and ten others were wounded in a suicide bombing attack targeting a Sahwa leader in south of Baaquba, a security source said on Tuesday.

“A suicide bomber blew up an explosive belt strapped to his body on Tuesday (Oct. 13) targeting the south of Baaquba Sahwa official leader Leith Mashaan who was in a store in central Bahraz district, south of Baaquba,” the source informed Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The explosion killed the official leader along with five others, including three Sahwa elements and injuring ten, including four Sahwa elements,” he added.

The Sahwa official contributed with Iraqi forces in arrested several al-Qaeda leaders, in addition to his role in arresting the leader of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq, Abu Omar al-Boghdadi.

Baaquba, the capital of Diala, is 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

IED blast kills 2 Iraqi soldiers, wounds 4 in Kirkuk

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two Iraqi soldiers were killed and four others wounded in an improvised explosive device attack southwest of Kirkuk city on Tuesday, a senior security official said.

“An IED went off near an Iraqi army patrol near the district of al-Rashad, (35 km) southwest of Kirkuk, leaving two soldiers of the Kirkuk 1st Contingent’s 47th Brigade killed and four others wounded,” Brig. Sarhad Qader, the Kirkuk Districts’ Police Department (KDPD), told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The oil-rich Kirkuk, a city of mixed Arab, Kurdish and Turkmen population, lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
