Rocket lands in south Kirkuk

A rocket landed south of the city of Kirkuk on Thursday but did not explode, a source from the city’s Joint Coordination Center (JCS) said.

“An unidentified rocket landed in the area of Huzayran 1 but did not explode,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Al-Adala police station patrols and personnel from the criminal investigations department and the bomb squad rushed to the site and removed it,” the source added.

The oil-rich Kirkuk, a city of mixed Kurdish, Arab and Turkmen population, lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

U.S. soldier killed, the 6th this month

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

A U.S. soldier was killed in a “non-combat” incident in Camp Adder in Iraq on Wednesday, raising to six the number of U.S. fatalities in October, according to a U.S. army statement.

“A U.S. soldier of the 13th Reconnaissance Command was killed in Camp Adder in Iraq in a non-combat incident,” read the statement as received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency, not giving further details.

The death brings to 4,353 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003, including 132 killed in 2009.

Car bomb explodes near U.S. patrol in Ba'aquba

A car bomb went off went on Thursday targeting a U.S. vehicle patrol in central Ba'aquba, according to a security source.

“A car crammed with explosives exploded on Thursday (Oct. 29) targeting a U.S. vehicle patrol near al-Batoul hospital in Baaquba al-Jadieda neighborhood in central Ba'aquba,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

No word was immediately available on human casualties or material damage.

Ba'aquba, the capital of Diala, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

11 officers, 50 policemen arrested – spokesman

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Eleven officers and 50 policemen were arrested in Baghdad after the two deadly explosions that hit the Justice Ministry and the Baghdad provincial council last Sunday, the official spokesman for the Baghdad’s Operations Command said on Thursday.

The state-run al-Iraqia satellite channel quoted Maj. General Qassem Atta as saying “11 officers and 50 policemen in al-Salhiyah region after the recent terrorist attack in the Iraqi capital.”

Two deadly blasts had targeted the justice ministry and Baghdad provincial council buildings near the green zone on Sunday (Oct. 25), leaving more than 150 people killed and hundreds others wounded, the two facilities destroyed and dozens of civilian vehicles burnt with passengers on board. Bomb explodes in Kirkuk without casualties

An improvised explosive device went off Thursday in central Kirkuk without causing damage, a source from the joint coordination center said.

“The bomb exploded on Thursday (Oct. 29) in al-Quds street, behind al-Mansour mosque, central Kirkuk, without causing casualties or material damage,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Police cordoned off the area surrounding the scene,” he added, without giving further details.

Kirkuk is 250 km northeast of Baghdad.

Bomber killed in northern Talafar

A suicide bomber was killed on Thursday in an explosive belt blast in northern Talafar, an army source said.

“The bomber was killed in the small hours of Thursday (Oct. 29) when an explosive belt, which he was attempting to put it on, went off inside his house in al-Salam neighborhood in northern Talafar,” Colonel Shehab Ahmad told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Meanwhile, Talafar police chief, Colonel Ali Hadi Ubeid, told Aswat al-Iraq news agency that unknown gunmen attacked a policeman yesterday night in front of his house in Alwa village, northern Talafar, using light weapons, killing him instantly.

He added no further details.

Talafar is 60 km northwest of Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, which lies 405 km north of Baghdad. SH (P)/SR

IED blast kills 3, wounds 4 in eastern Baghdad

Three civilians were killed and four others wounded when an improvised explosive device went off near a passenger vehicle in eastern Baghdad on Wednesday, police said.

“An IED attached to a passenger vehicle went off near al-Baladiyat intersection in eastern Baghdad, leaving three persons, including two women, killed and four others wounded,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The explosion damaged the vehicle and other civilian vehicles near the site,” the source added.

He said that security forces sealed off the blast scene while ambulances rushed the wounded to a nearby hospital.

2 policemen wounded in IED blast in Jalawlaa

Two policemen were wounded when an improvised explosive device went off in Jalawlaa district on Wednesday, according to a local security source.

“An IED planted by unidentified persons in the area of Tabaj, Jalawlaa, (30 km) southwest of Khanaqin, went off just as a police patrol was driving by, leaving two policemen wounded,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Khanaqin, one of the areas subject to dispute between the central government in Baghdad and the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), is 155 km southeast of Baaquba.

“The injured security men were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment,” the source said, not giving further details.

Baaquba, the capital city of the province of Diala, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Samarra Sahwa official survives attempt on his life

An official of the Samarra sahwa (awakening) tribal forces survived an assassination attempt with an improvised explosive device attached to his vehicle east of the city on Wednesday, a sahwa source said.

“Raheem Muzieb al-Bazi, the official in charge of al-Jabiriya sahwa forces, east of Samarra, escaped the attempt as the IED went off after he went out of his car and entered his house,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The blast left a woman who happened to be near the site wounded. She was rushed to the Tikrit Teaching Hospital for treatment,” he added.

The source said that Bazi’s house was severely damaged in the blast.

The city of Samarra lies 120 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

3 killed, 5 wounded in bombing in Mosul

Three civilians were killed, four others were wounded, and one soldier was injured when a roadside bomb went off on Wednesday in eastern Mosul.

“The blast took place in Garaj al-Shemal neighborhood,” said a security source from Ninewa province.

He said that the attack targeted an Iraqi army patrol.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Blast in Baghdad leaves 6 injuries

Six civilians were injured when a roadside bomb went off in northwestern Baghdad, a source from the Iraqi police said on Wednesday.

“The incident took place at al-Hurriya neighborhood,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He did not mention further details.
